Education Requirements to Become a CRNA
The certified registered nurse anesthetist education begins with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, available at many colleges nationwide. This is a 4-year degree. After completion of the B.S.N., state boards are required in all 50 United States. Each state has a separate board examination, offered twice a year. You must complete all sections of the state board to receive your license to practice nursing in your state.
After receiving the license, then you can apply for the advance practice degree of nurse anesthetist, which is a master’s level program. This Master of Science Nursing program is offered through the colleges and universities of your state. This is a two-year program and will require a one-year residency or practicum.
Steps to Becoming a Nurse Anesthetist
Begin by researching nursing schools and colleges and universities that offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. There are still nursing schools that offer a diploma in nursing with a three year course of study, these can be converted to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing when additional coursework is completed. Pass your state board examinations.
Work in a hospital in an advanced field of nursing such as the emergency room, intensive care unit, or surgery and labor and delivery for at least 12 months. Each of these specialties requires more training and more intense supervision of the patients and will allow you exposure to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. These personnel will be a wealth of experience and information as you choose your school to begin your advanced training.
Enroll in a Master of Science degree program within the nursing specialty of anesthesiology. You will have extended courses in pharmacology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology and hands-on practical experience in the nursing field.
Complete the Master of Science degree and complete a one-year long on-the-job internship. Pass the state board examination for the certified nurse anesthetist.
Career Overview
A certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is a licensed advanced practice nurse (APRN) who performs the same tasks in pain management as an anesthesiologist (MD). As an advanced practice nurse, CRNAs possess a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) degree in the area of nurse anesthesiology and have passed a specialty examination that provides national certification in all 50 states. Certified nurse anesthetists earn some of the highest salaries in all of the nursing profession making this a great option for those interested in pursuing and advanced nursing career.
Nurse anesthetists work in close collaboration with medical and oral surgeons, podiatrists, and anesthesiologists. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) nurse anesthetists are “the sole anesthesiologists in more than two-thirds of all rural hospitals in the United States. And they administer approximately 30 million anesthetics to patients nationwide each year.”
Certified nurse anesthetists assume responsibility for administering pain management medications to patients before, during and post surgery, as well as during the delivery of babies. Primary job duties of a CRNA include conducting pre-surgery physical examinations, administering anesthesia during surgical procedures, and monitoring patient’s recovery from anesthesia once the procedure is over. Most nurse anesthetists work as part of the healthcare team within hospitals, while others work on as independent contractors.

A certified nurse anesthetist brings a high level of skills and knowledge to their work. According to the AANA, most CRNA training programs include nearly 1700 clinical hours during which students administer 800-900 anesthetics prior to their graduation. While some certified nurse anesthetists work next to anesthesiologists, many Nurse Anesthetists work independently, providing all anesthetic services for the health care facility, private office, or clinic. Because of the significant degree responsibility and autonomy that CRNAs are provided, they undergo some of the most rigorous training of all master’s degree nursing students.
Employment prospects for Certified Nurse Anesthetists are excellent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the growth rate of advanced practice nurses is expected to be 30 percent through 2018, much faster than the rate for most other occupations. The greatest number of employment opportunities will be within inner city and rural areas. As per the AANA, a CRNA provides a cost-efficient and quality-based alternative to anesthesiologists who are in short supply and command higher salaries.
This enables healthcare facilities of all type to lower costs without sacrificing high standards of care. The AANA estimates “that approximately eight certified nurse anesthetists can be educated for around the same cost as one anesthesiologist. In other words, because they possess such a high level of skills and expertise and they come in a higher supply and at a lower cost, employers find certified registered nurse anesthetists a cost-effective alternative to anesthesiologists.
A recent published report by the AANA published showed virtually no difference in the quality of patient care provided by anesthesiologists (MDs) and certified nurse anesthetists.
CRNA School Accreditation
Focus your school search on those programs that have been approved by the state in which you hope to practice. Failing to do so may mean that you waste significant sums money on a degree that will preclude you from obtaining an advanced practice license. Accredited nursing programs adhere to strict standards with regard to quality of education and will prepare you to sit for the national certification examination required by most states.
Before you select a program, verify that it is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The U.S. Department of Education recognizes both agencies as the official accreditation bodies for nursing education schools.
While individual programs may have unique requirements, general admission requirements for CRNA master’s programs include:
- A bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN) degree or degree in related area (individual programs decide on appropriate degrees).
- A current and unrestricted license as a registered nurse (RN)
- A minimum of one year experience as an acute care nurse (each program decides what experience constitutes “acute care” nursing).
CRNA National Certification Examination (NCE)
The national certification examination is administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists (CCNA), part of the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). The NCE measures the knowledge, skills and abilities deemed necessary for entry-level nurse anesthesia practitioners.
Eligibility requirements to sit for the NCE exam include:
a. Current and unrestricted RN license (Web-based certification may be used for those states than no longer issue a paper license);
b. Official transcript showing completion of an accredited masters program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Program;
c. Complete application form with legal name and address
d. A cashier’s check or money order in the amount of $725. made payable to the National Board on Certification and any other applicable fees;
e. Certify that you have never had a license suspended or revoked or have been the subject of disciplinary action.
f. No criminal background of either a felony or misdemeanor nature
g. Sign waiver of Liability, along with non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with regard to content of the NCE.
h. The computer-based exam consists of a minimum of 100 multiple choice questions: 70 questions of which will be counted towards your score and 30 being pre-test questions. A maximum of 3 hours is permitted to complete the test.
i. Candidates may receive a preliminary pass-fail report upon completion of the exam. Validated results will be sent by the NBCRNA Council of Nurse Anesthetists within 2 to 4 weeks following test completion to the name and address listed on the NCE exam application.

Each year, the university receives at least 200 applications from RNs who want to be admitted to the program. About 32 students are admitted to the nurse anesthesia program.
