Direct Entry MSN Degree Programs
Direct Entry MSN programs are for people with a current non-nursing Bachelor’s or Master’s degree that want to get into nursing with an MSN (Master’s of Science in Nursing) degree.
Direct Entry MSN programs are formatted similarly to the Accelerated Second Degree BSN program, but resulting in a Master’s level nursing degree (MSN). Nursing classes of this nature give credit for previous courses such as science and general education while at the same time allowing entry into clinical work and nursing theory that is very rigorous.
Options are available that separate the BSN from the MSN degrees. It is a logical progression from the BSN to the MSN and allows stoppage at the BSN degree if that is what you choose.

Why Choose a Direct Entry MSN Program?
Advanced nurses are in great need by doctors and hospitals all through the world. The Direct Entry MSN programs are basically designed for those that hold degrees at the level of bachelors in different fields of study. It allows for the training and retention of all nursing skills and features different tracks depending on the field of study. Each school will be different as to the different tracks such as NP, CRNA and so on. The restrictions will vary between the schools as to what is accepted and what paths or tracks are available to students of a particular school.
Requirements for Direct Entry MSN Programs
Some of the requirements for direct entry MSN programs include items such as a certain GPA, certain science courses such as Physiology or Anatomy, Microbiology and so on. Chemistry may also be included along with Pathophysiology. Statistics may also be a required course. All schools will require different commitments and the time range for these credits may not be more than at least 7 years old, depending on the school in question. Let’s get you applied to a Direct Entry MSN school.
Researching the many different schools that have the Direct Entry MSN program is easy. Your former school can also have information on the many different programs as well as researching via the internet. Each school will have different requirements for acceptance into their school and the Nursing School may have different requirements. Speaking with an admissions counselor or looking the information up online is ideal.
If you want to enter a program like this, what would the time frame be for graduation? Most of the time, you can count on at least three years until your program is complete. There are other factors that can come into play. So the bare minimum would be at least three years. Starting out, you will take generalist courses then go beyond this to advanced coursework.
Between the current nursing shortage and the economic downturn, a lot of people without nursing degrees are looking to get into nursing. Short of starting over in a nursing program, leaving them with a useless first degree and a lot of wasted time, is there a way to get a masters in nursing for non nursing majors? Surprisingly enough, the answer is yes.
Featured Online Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) Programs
The following featured schools have master’s in healthcare programs. You should speak with them about specific entry requirements.
Accelerated MSN vs. Direct Entry MSN
There are two main routes that non nursing majors can use to get a masters degree in nursing:
1. Enter an accelerated degree program for their bachelors in nursing, graduate, take the NCLEX-RN, and go on to get their masters degree.
2. Enroll in a direct entry nursing program, take the NCLEX-RN, and go on to get their masters degree.
Both of these programs are similar, and both can allow students to get a masters degree in nursing, but they have a couple of key differences.
Accelerated degree programs are designed for people who want to get a bachelors of science in nursing, and already have a bachelor’s in something else. An accelerated program eliminates the liberal arts courses required for nursing students on the assumption that the student has already taken them as part of their first degree program, and concentrates all of their core nursing classes into about two years of full-time study. At the end of an accelerated degree program, students graduate with a BSN, and can sit for their NCLEX-RN. They are called accelerated programs because they accelerate the process of getting a four year nursing degree.
Typically with an accelerated program, students compress their core classes into just a year and a half or two years of instruction. Students are required to be full time, and to go to school year round in order to graduate within that time frame. At the end of an accelerated degree program, nursing students walk away with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), and can take their NCLEX-RN. At this point, they can remain a practicing RN, or go back for their masters.
Direct entry nursing programs are designed to help people with non-nursing bachelors degrees to get an advanced degree in nursing. A direct entry program concentrates the courses that a student needs in order to take the NCLEX-RN into a few months’ worth of coursework. The student is then allowed to take the NCLEX-RN, and then continue on to get a masters degree in nursing, just like they would if they had started with a BSN. At the end of a direct entry nursing program, students still do not have a BSN, but have met the requirements needed to take the NCLEX-RN, and have continued on to get their master’s degree. They are called direct entry nursing programs because they allow non-nursing degree holders to directly enter the masters in nursing degree path, without having a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as a prerequisite.
Schools with Accelerated or Direct Entry MSN Degree Programs
A lot of reputable schools offer either accelerated nursing degree programs, or direct entry degree programs, but they aren’t likely to offer both. If you’ve decided to go the accelerated degree route to get your BSN, then schools like the Duke University School of Nursing can help you. This accelerated nursing program allows students to complete their nursing BSN coursework in four semesters, including credit hours that can later apply to a Master of Science in Nursing through Duke. Other schools that offer an accelerated BSN program include Creighton University in Nebraska, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey.
If you’ve decided to enter a direct entry program for your Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN), then you can choose from schools like Northeastern University’s Bouve College of Health Sciences and Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in Massachusetts, Xavier University in Ohio, the University of Virginia School of Nursing in Virginia, or the University of New Hampshire.
It’s important to contact your state’s Board of Nursing for a list of approved nursing programs. Schools are able to gain and lose certification, and some schools who have lost it will claim to have maintained it. Your Board of Nursing will be able to supply you with a complete, up-to-date list of all of the Board-approved nursing schools in your area.
It’s possible to get a masters in nursing for non nursing majors, as long as you know where to look. Nursing school is hard, and the prospect of starting over from the beginning can be daunting, especially to someone who already has a degree in something else. Fortunately, with things like accelerated nursing degrees and direct entry nursing degree programs, students don’t need to worry about being forced to become freshmen all over again- they can fill in the nursing courses they need, and go on to get their masters in nursing.
Currently, the US requires more nursing professionals than ever before. With these needs comes the desire for people to switch careers to the more promising and ripe nursing profession. However, people who want to switch careers are most likely to have bachelor degrees from their earlier professions. This is where the accelerated masters on nursing come in; to help bring more nurses to the health care field from other professions within a short time.
Accelerated masters degree in nursing targets both non-nurses who wish to take nursing and also RNs who wish to have a master in nursing but only have an Associate degree. The essence of this degree program is to help cut-down the time required to finish a nursing course without having to undertake a bachelor degree in nursing followed by the masters program. The accelerated master combines the two and delivers a one tight curriculum for the aspiring nurse.
Curriculum for Direct Entry MSN & Accelerated MSN Programs
Direct Entry MSN Curriculum
This is the program that directly admits non-nurses into nursing school provided they have a bachelor’s degree from another accredited program. In this scenario, the student nurse takes three years to complete the nursing degree as opposed to the two usual years applicable to masters programs.
The first year of nursing school is designed to train the non-nurse students on basic nursing concepts similar to those trained in ASN and BSN programs. Students are exempted from doing some nursing credits that mirror those from their earlier bachelor degrees.
For the 2nd year, the students take advanced nursing courses similar to those who take the usual MSN from BSN pathway. Courses covered in this section include research methods in nursing, advanced practice nursing, advanced nursing theories and population based nursing. In the 3rd year of nursing school, students choose an area of nursing specialty. The accelerated masters in nursing prepare students to become advanced practice RNs and as such, nurses must choose from the many areas of specialist nursing available. Such specialties which nurses can choose from include:
- Psychiatry
- Pediatrics
- Cardiology
- Geriatrics
- Public health
- Women’s health
- Forensics
- Informatics among others
Mandatory, supervised clinical practicum sessions are also part of this program for assessment on the real working environment. Students can be attached to their university hospitals or any other affiliated healthcare providers. Completion of the accelerated direct entry MSN allows non-nurses cam nurses to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam for certification as RNs.
Accelerated RN to MSN Curriculum
The accelerated RN to MSN programs enables RNs who took an Associate degree to earn a Masters in nursing without having to take the BSN degree. In this case, the student is saved from repeating similar courses between the ASN and BSN. RNs who take this program have high chances of being awarded both degrees ie a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Master’s of Science in nursing concurrently.
However, students should note this is not always the case with all nursing schools and is only available in some but not others. Students who wish to be awarded both degrees must check with their states board of nursing for nursing schools that have such an arrangement. View all RN to MSN Programs here.
Career Opportunities for Direct Entry MSN Degree Holders
After graduation, you will be able to work as an advanced care or advanced practice nurse with all the challenges that a nurse in this field would undergo. Before you complete this course, you will have taken your RN exam – NCLEX and have experience in different fields by the time graduation rolls around. The programs also allow for a better rounded education in the nursing field. You will be better prepared for work as an advanced care nurse and your training will be much sought after. Advanced care nurses are much in demand and the time spent in this program will be well worthwhile.
Discovering MSN Basic Entry Courses
One discovery that you should make would be to take a look at each program before deciding on it. Costs, hours, MSN specializations have to be looked at in the whole before choosing a direct entry program in nursing. Different courses will have different application statuses such as CRNA. This type of nursing direct entry would require at least one year of experience in the field of critical care nursing. Some programs will not be open to direct entry MSN students due to different criteria such as work experience or other qualifications.
Many fields of specialization are open to MSN direct entry programs. Programs of this sort will take a couple of years to complete but you will have a career at the end of your training that is fulfilling, challenging and the pay is great as well.
