Oral Roberts University Nursing School Review
Oral Roberts University (ORU) is an evangelical Christian university based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The university was founded in1963 by evangelist Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts University awards bachelor’s through doctoral degrees to over 3,000 students each year. The university was named as one of the best in its region by The Princeton Review. Oral Roberts University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Nursing Programs
The BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) degree program at Oral Roberts University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The Anna Vaughn College of Nursing (AVCON) at Oral Roberts University prepares nurses with a BSN in nursing according to a Christian worldview. The BSN program focuses on holistic care, training nurses to treat the whole individual. Additionally, the BSN program has a global/missions focus. Past nursing students have completed clinical practicum experiences in Nigeria and Mexico.
Oral Roberts University Undergraduate Nursing Programs
BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) Degree Program
The BSN program prepares nurse generalists prepared to treat individuals and families in a variety of healthcare settings. Admission requirements for students without previous higher education include a SAT with a minimum score of 1000 or an ACT with a minimum score of 21. Students with college coursework should meet the above requirements and have at least a 3.3 GPA in previous college coursework. Pre-requisites to nursing coursework in the Oral Roberts University BSN program include chemistry, psychology, anatomy, physiology, nutrition and microbiology. Once accepted into the BSN program, students must meet certain requirements and maintain an academic standard in the nursing courses to earn the BSN degree. Progression requirements for BSN program include maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA, earning a grade of “C” or better in all courses including prerequisites and repeating a course no more than once to earn a “C.” The BSN nursing program can be completed in 8 semesters. Upon completion of the program, nurses are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, to become a Registered Nurse (RN). The BSN program includes an NCLEX-RN review course designed to assist students in preparing for the exam.
Organizations for Nursing Students at Oral Roberts University
Nursing students at Oral Roberts University have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities and student organizations, in addition to international missions experiences to expand their knowledge in the field of nursing. The Student Nurses Association (SNA) at Oral Roberts University specifically assists in preparing students with nursing education experiences. The SNA at Oral Roberts University is one of many student groups participating in nursing education in the state of Oklahoma and throughout the country. Alpha Lambda Delta is an honor society for students of all majors attending Oral Roberts University. Alpha Lambda Delta is an organization in which all students who meet GPA requirements may participate. Nursing students may also participate in internships in Ghana or on the Ivory Coast.
