Oklahoma Christian University Nursing School Review

Oklahoma Christian University (OC) is a large, public university awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Oklahoma Christian University is based in Edmond, Oklahoma and serves over 2,000 students. Established in 1950 as Central Christian College, today, the university maintains its affiliation with the Church of Christ. Oklahoma Christian University was names among the best universities in the region by The Princeton Review and U.S. News and World Report. The Higher Learning Commission North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Oklahoma Christian University.

Nursing Programs

The Department of Nursing is within the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma Christian University. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredits the BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) program at Oklahoma Christian University. In addition to the BSN degree, the nursing department offers a BSE (Bachelor’s of Science in Education) Science Education.

BSN Degree in Nursing

The BSN degree in nursing at Oklahoma Christian University prepares nurses for a variety of career options and settings in which the BSN degree may be utilized.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements to the BSN degree program include a minimum 2.5 GPA, 3 letters of recommendation, minimum TOEFL score of 500 (for international students only), a drug and health screening and satisfactory scores on academic achievement tests. Transfer students may be accepted to the BSN program, but are required to develop a program of study that is individualized to their specific academic background, and must meet with both an advisor and the registrar.

BSN Program Progression

Once accepted to the BSN program, students are required to maintain a 2.9 or higher GPA to continue enrollment in the undergraduate nursing program. The undergraduate nursing program consists of classroom work and clinical practicum experiences. Oklahoma Christian University students have the unique opportunity of completing the clinical experiences both domestically and abroad. Past BSN students have attended missions trips in South America. Courses in the nursing program include math, science and psychology in addition to nursing. Nurses are exposed to a wide variety of nursing areas including mental health nursing, adult nursing, maternal-child nursing and a nursing research course.

Completion of the BSN program

The BSN degree requires 126 academic credits to complete. Once the program is completed, nursing students earn a BSN and are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (RNs). Graduates of the Oklahoma Christian University BSN degree program exceed the national pass rate for the NCLEX-RN exam.

Summer Programs in Nursing at Oklahoma Christian University

Oklahoma Christian University offers a very unique summer program for nursing students. Students may participate in the HonduraServe Medical Mission Program. This nursing summer program not only exposes students to another culture, but also gives them the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the BSN degree program. Nursing students will work in medical clinics in a remote mountainous village among other settings in Honduras. Nurses will have the opportunity to work along pre-med students.
