Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (RN to BSN)
Offering more advanced studies and increased career opportunities, the RN to BSN Program allows Registered Nurses who have already completed an approved course of study to seek baccalaureate degrees in Nursing. This accelerated program uses the previous education and experience of RNs and applies it toward the learning necessary to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This program is offered one day a week, with each individual course lasting an average of five weeks. The intensive program can be completed in less than two years. To encourage students to strive for excellence, Lancaster General offers Associate degree students access to the RN to BSN Program on a dual-enrollment basis for one calendar year after successful graduation from the initial program. This allows students to transition smoothly into the more complex program without going through another admissions process or paying additional fees.
A Nursing education does not have to end at the baccalaureate level. Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences prepares its students for a lengthy academic career dedicated to advanced understanding and mastery of nursing-related topics. For admission the student must present proof of graduation from an RN program, a copy of her Registered Nurse license and official transcripts from previous learning institutions.
Master of Science in Nursing Education Program
The MSN program prepares students for even further degrees of career advancement through earning a graduate degree. The two courses offered within this program allow the successful graduate to choose specialization in either Nursing Education or Clinical Nurse Leadership to best fit their particular personalities and professional aspirations. The Master’s program consists of 36 hours, split evenly between core and specialty courses. There are educational and application requirements for admission, including among other things a valid RN license, 2 years or more of professional experience, three recommendation letters and a personal interview. School Nurse Certification Program
The school nurse is an important member of the medical field and earning certification in this area represents the opportunity for a rewarding career. To earn these certification students must be in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or be post-baccalaureate. Interested applicants must also hold a valid RN license and have minimum grade point credentials for admission into the program. Licensed Practical Nursing Program

Length of the Program
The Practical Nursing Program is divided into three progressive levels of instruction. Admission Requirements
The nursing field is competitive, as is admission into the Nursing Program at HACC. Interested applicants must hold a valid high school diploma from an approved secondary institution or equivalent program and achieve satisfactory scores on entrance exams that show understanding and aptitude in a range of topics. Three letters of recommendation from non-family references that speak to the moral character of the applicant should be submitted along with the completed college application. Accepted students must demonstrate good physical and mental health through evidence of a comprehensive physical exam and record of completed immunizations, tests and drug screenings, and cooperation with any recommended treatment. Further evidence of moral character must be presented in the form of criminal background checks with particular focus on felonies and child abuse clearance.

Practical Nursing Program
Within the medical community patient care is provided by teams of trained professionals. An important member of such a team is a Licensed Practical Nurse. How Long is the Program?
Students entering Harcum College’s Practical Nursing Program have two options for scheduling. HC offers Day Nursing and Evening Nursing to provide flexibility and the ability to pursue an education while also fulfilling other obligations. Day Nursing students begin their course of study in the fall and study for two years part-time. The Evening Nursing Program is designed for the busy, accelerated student wishing to complete the course of study in 18 months. In both programs the course is divided among general education, theoretical nursing and clinical nursing instruction.
Admission Requirements: Academic
Gaining admittance in to the Nursing Program requires applicants to meet specific academic guidelines. These ensure that the student will be prepared for the course work presented during the program and will also be able to handle the increasing complexity of the latter portion of the course of study. Interested applicants must offer proof of graduation from an approved secondary institution. Both tracks also require a core set of ten prerequisite courses that must be completed prior to the start of the student’s program. These courses include such topics as English Composition, Mathematics, Psychology and Microbiology. Successful completion of these courses must be shown by the May prior to a fall semester beginning, or December prior to a May beginning in order for the applicant to be eligible. Applicants must also submit satisfactory scores on placement and aptitude tests.
Admission Requirements: Personal
The personal character of nurses is crucial to their effectiveness, which is why Harcum requires Nursing Program candidates to show proof of strong moral character as well as physical and mental health. Criminal and Child Abuse Clearance, physical examinations and a personal essay demonstrate these traits. Applicants must also submit letters from two references and a professional resume. Completion of the admissions packet also requires a formal letter stating when the applicant intends to complete the necessary prerequisite courses.

Students attend either lectures or clinical hours Monday through Friday. Level I provides fundamental information in the areas of Nursing, Pharmacology, Science and Nutrition for a total of 536 instructional hours. The second level offers more advanced studies into Nursing methods and procedures and Pharmacology, and an additional course in Growth and Development. Level II features more clinical hours than lecture, for a total of 485 hours. The final level is the most complex of the course. In Level III students approach the most difficult Nursing and Pharmacology concepts, with an additional course in Pediatrics. Finally, this level offers instruction in Leadership and Transition which gives future LPNs a glimpse at the trends and issues facing contemporary nursing. This level is made up mainly of clinical hours, with only 190 of the total 589 course hours being lecture.
Admission Requirements
For admission into the Greene County Career and Technology Center LPN Program applicants must provide documentation of meeting specific requirements, both academic and personal in nature. The applicant must have satisfactorily completed high school or an equivalent program and scored minimum standard rates on a pre-entrance exam. Professional references reflecting the applicant’s personal character, academic achievement and aptitude for furthered learning and the nursing industry must be submitted and the applicant must sit for an interview with Nursing Program faculty. Finally, good mental and physical health, as well as good moral character, must be shown through evidence of a physical examination, up-to-date immunization record and Criminal and Child Abuse Background check. After these specifications are met the admitted student is expected to have valid certification in CPR and health insurance prior to the first day of classes.

How Long Will it Take?
The LPN Program through the Franklin County Career and Technology Center take one calendar year. It is comprised of three progressively more difficult levels of instruction featuring general education and nursing instruction. Students are expected to attend classroom lectures or clinical experiences five days a week to fulfill the full-time course of study. Classes begin in either February or August depending on the start date of the particular student. Completion of the program will represent over 1,600 hours of learning.
Course of Study
The LPN Program through FCCTC is divided into three levels of general education and nursing courses. These levels increase in complexity as the student progresses through them, becoming more difficult both in theory and clinical exercises. These clinical experiences are offered in various medical settings, changing each level.
Level I covers 16 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered at a local nursing home and rehabilitation center, and hospital. Level II covers 22 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered at a hospital, a health center and a treatment center. The final, most intensive, level is 8 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered in rehabilitation and nursing homes. Level III completes the program of study with a course regarding Leadership that prepares the students for true-life professional experiences.
Admission Process
Admission into the LPN Program is dependent on students submitting proper documentation of various requirements including graduation from, or satisfactory completion of, an approved high school or equivalent program. Applicants must also prove stable physical health, current immunizations and a clean drug screen. An aptitude exam must also be passed along with FBI and Child Abuse Clearance. Prior to beginning classes the student must have CPR certification. Once all necessary documentation has been gathered the completed application package will be presented to an Admissions committee. If accepted, the student will receive notification by mail.
Successful completion of this program ensures students can enter the competitive workforce with confidence. After licensing exams have been passed, graduates will be qualified to gain employment at hospitals, medical practices, private employment or other facilities.

This exam evaluates the general academic understanding of the applicant as well as his aptitude for further learning.
Course of Study
The Practical Nursing Program is taught in three levels of progressive intensity. The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU), #25 in the Allegheny chain of Intermediate Units (AIU), strives to provide career-building education and life skills to its wide reach of students. Nursing Program
DCIU offers a one year Practical Nursing program that prepares students to enter the workforce pursuing high demand positions as Licensed Practical Nurses. This program is an intensive course of study introducing both general education and core nursing information in a variety of settings. Graduates are prepared to sit for the state licensing exams that qualify them for immediate employment.
Licensed Practical Nursing Program
Of the approximately 100 students that are admitted into the program each year, only 70 graduate. This demonstrates the intensity of the program, and its determination to progress only those students who are passionate about nursing and who will fulfill the responsibilities and roles of an LPN with confidence and competence. The Licensed Practical Nursing Program through the Delaware County Intermediate Unit acts both as a means to pursue gainful employment in the fast-paced medical field, but also as a bridge to lead students to further degrees of education. Instruction
Students are taught in both classroom lecture settings and through clinical experiences. These clinical experiences, offered in area hospitals and facilities, are directly related to the theory discussed during the lecture portion of the course and enable the students to enjoy hands-on learning and practice to develop and hone skills. Through the unique cooperation of DCIU with area medical facilities students are also given the opportunity to hear guest lecturers and attend nursing conferences to learn more in-depth about specialty topics.
Community Involvement
Nursing is not just about performing medical tasks, but rather about developing relationships and touching the lives of other people. Delaware County Intermediate Unit understands this important role and encourages students of the Nursing Program to be involved in their community through a variety of projects and programs. Every graduating class is required to plan and implement a community service project during their Winter Break. The pediatric rotation also finds students participating at a local school fair. The program has also recently aligned themselves with the Girl Scouts of America to provide a cooperative learning experience for the scouts and the nursing students. Course of Study
The LPN program is offered in four progressive levels. These levels of instruction build upon each other to reach its greatest complexity in the final courses prior to graduation. Level I introduces students to the most basic of nursing information as well as fundamentals of Math that will allow students to gain early understanding of administering medications. The more difficult concepts begin in Level II with the introduction of nutrition and Medical Surgical Nursing as well as mental health concepts. The third level builds upon the Medical Surgical Nursing concepts and focuses on Obstetrical Nursing and Pediatrics.
Level IV is the most aggressive of the levels. Advanced concepts in Medical Surgical Nursing are presented, along with discussions of Mental Retardation and Psychiatric Nursing and the special needs of Gerontological patients.

Nursing Program

Nursing Assistant

Admission Requirements

How Long Will it Take?
This program consists of a total of 96 credits, including both general education college courses and core nursing credits. This program covers six semesters, four of 16 weeks each and 2 of 6 weeks each, over a period of two years. Of the time spent in these courses, over 1,000 hours will have been spent with clinical experiences.
Admission
The Conemaugh Valley Nursing School is highly selective and allows only the most qualified of applicants to enter the program. Educational requirements including appropriate secondary education, fulfilled prerequisites and satisfactory scores on entrance exams must be met prior to enrollment. Admitted students must also undergo a comprehensive physical and dental exam, following all recommendations and getting any necessary immunizations. Advanced Placement
Interested applicants who already hold a valid practical nursing license may be eligible to enter the program with advanced placement. These students must have had steady employment in a medical environment within the two years prior to admission into the program. These LPNs must have had one year of clinical experience in a long-term or acute setting to equate the learning of the early part of the program that would be eliminated with advanced placement. Applicants must also earn satisfactory evaluations on a transition course and clinical evaluation. How Quickly is the Degree Earned?
Students are required to take a minimum of 64 total credit hours in order to graduate. These credit hours are comprised of both general education and core nursing courses that provide a well-rounded and balanced program of study. Though they can be completed in four semesters covering two calendar years, students are required to complete the entire degree program within four calendar years of admission.
Interested applicants already holding a valid Practical Nursing license are eligible for advanced placement into the program. Others who may also obtain advanced placement are honorably discharged servicemen and applicants who have had at least one year of previous nursing education. Advanced placement enables these students to earn their degree faster, thereby utilizing their previous experience to gain employment more quickly. Students will complete a minimum of 68 credits in liberal arts general education and core nursing courses. Each course will be made up of classroom lecture and applicable clinical experiences. Successful graduates from this program will be prepared to sit for state licensing exams required to seek gainful employment.
LPN to RN Option
Already licensed Practical Nurses can enter the Associate’s Degree program at the Community College of Allegheny County with advanced standing. This advanced standing assures that these qualified nurses will be able to further their career options in a shorter time than those entering the program without experience. Applicants must meet all of the prerequisites required for the program, as well as demonstrating understanding and skill in the areas covered by the early parts of the course of study. A transition course must also be passed to show competence in areas such as theory and clinical knowledge. An applicant has two tries to complete and pass the transition course. The second attempt may be dependent on space availability and may not be immediately offered should the applicant be unsuccessful during a first attempt at advanced placement.
Campus Options
The Community College of Allegheny County has several campus options from which to choose. Each campus offers a slightly different version of the Nursing Program, including the timing of the courses and the venues for clinical experiences. Students should closely review the amenities and details of each campus, including location and resources, prior to making a selection. The semester that an applicant wishes to enter the program, as well as the particular type of nursing she wishes to perform, will impact the campus chosen.

Created in 1969, Clearfield County Career and Technology Center (CCCTC) offers career preparation and technical education to high school students and adults in Central Pennsylvania. This education prepares these students to compete in the workforce outside of its technologically advanced campus.
Nursing Program
The intensive Nursing Program at Clearfield County Career and Technology Center strives to prepare its students for the fast-paced and in-demand field of practical nursing. Practical Nursing
Practical Nurses provide basic bedside care to patients dealing with common medical problems. Working under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses and physicians, LPNs administer simple care and participate in treatment plans to offer patients the best care possible. With a 95% career placement rate for its graduating classes, the Practical Nursing program through CCCTC is proven a thorough and effective training option.
How Long Will it Take?
The 48-week course of study is divided into three progressive semesters. These semesters are comprised both of classroom lecture and clinical experience instruction. The lecture portion of the program is offered through the cutting edge CCCTC campus, while clinical experiences are handled in various medical locations in the area, including hospitals and long-term care institutions. A technologically advanced simulation lab is offered for enhanced learning when hands-on experience is not possible.
Admission Requirements
Interested applicants must meet certain requirements prior to gaining admission into the Practical Nursing program. Applicants must offer proof of graduation from an accredited high school or GED or home school equivalent. They must also meet pre-entrance exam standards. As with any part of the medical field, good health of the students is important so applicants are expected to present documentation of a complete physical along with necessary immunizations.
Moral character is an essential aspect of an effective Practical Nurse, which is why applicants must undergo a comprehensive criminal and background check as well as gaining full child abuse clearance. Applicants with certain crimes or negative behaviors in their past will cause them to be ineligible.
Advanced Placement
Some applicants may have post-secondary experience or education that would enable them to benefit from advanced placement in the Practical Nursing program. These students should contact the director of the program and undergo individual evaluation as to confirm the placement. Applicants that gain approval for advanced placement will enter the program in either the second or third semester.
The admissions process for advanced placement includes showing proof of previous experience in the nursing field as well as a letter of recommendation from the Head of the Nursing Program. An additional reference must be offered by an instructor of clinical nursing that documents satisfactory understanding and mastery of objectives that would be covered in the semesters to the “skipped” by the advanced placement. Comprehensive exams comprised of information presented in these semesters must also be passed.
Successful graduates of this program will be prepared to seek employment in various medical environments such as doctor’s offices, hospitals, private employment and military service.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

How Long Does the Nursing Program Take?

Admission Requirements

Course Progression
The Practical Nursing Program is designed to introduce core and specialized information in a combination of classroom and hands-on clinical experience formats. Taught in three levels, the program builds upon itself to progressively introduce more difficult materials as the students move toward graduation. At completion of this program students will be prepared to enter the nursing work force and provide basic bedside care to a variety of patients.
Level I
Level I of the Practical Nursing Program lays the foundation for the skills and principles taught during the rest of the program. Students will take Introduction to Nursing, a course that outlines the basic elements of a nursing career. Through this course students will learn to evaluate one’s life and surroundings in such a way that they will learn to “think like a nurse” in a critical manner. Students will also learn the basics of communication skills essential for being an effective nurse.
Students will also take Nursing Principles and Practice, a course that begins teaching both theoretical and clinical components of nursing. During this course students will be introduced to a variety of cultural issues that influence the practice and effect of nursing, especially as is applicable to the life cycle.
A general education course, Basic Science will reiterate fundamentals of scientific thought regarding such topics as anatomy and physiology. Finally, the important concerns related to nursing a patient being given drug therapy will be addressed in the course Nursing Considerations for Drug Therapy.
Level II
Throughout Level II of the Practical Nursing learning experience, students will focus on specialized forms of nursing. The Childbearing Experience is a course that goes beyond just the basic information of nursing a pregnant woman, or one that has just given birth. Rather, this course discusses the various concerns of a woman prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, during childbirth and immediately after. Care for the new baby is also discussed, as is the importance of the family role, especially motherhood and fatherhood, in the entire experience of childbearing.
The course Child-Adolescent Nursing builds on the principles taught for caring for a newborn and applies it to the growing needs of young children and adolescents. This includes nutritional, emotional and psychosocial needs, as well as approaching treatment methods such as drug therapy. The clinical aspect of this course will include witnessing the operation of various agencies that serve such patients.
Adult Nursing I is a course devoted to the concerns of the young adult. This course focuses not just on the physical health and monitoring of the patients but the psychosocial, psychological and sociological issues impacting young adults today. This course offers a strong clinical element as well as critical think exercises in applying acquired skills to true life situations such as dietary adjustments and evaluating conflicting treatment elements.
Level III
The final level of the Practical Nursing program completes the learning of the human lifecycle and prepares the student for the realities of a career in nursing. Adult Nursing II approaches the particular nursing needs of the middle aged adult, whereas Adult Nursing III speaks to the needs of the older adult, including concerns regarding end of life. Adult Nursing III in particular focuses on the inclusion of the significant other in the treatment planning and implementation process.
Leadership and Trends in Practical Nursing is a course that explores issues related to the contemporary concerns facing nurses such as ethics, responsibility and communication. During this course students will also prepare extensively for state licensing with practice exams and extensive laboratory and clinical experiences.

Practical Nursing Program
The Practical Nursing program at Chester County Intermediate Unit prepares students to pursue careers in the medical field as practical nurses. A practical nurse provides simple care to patients with basic health concerns, performing tasks such as preparing and administering injections, basic wound care and life tasks such as bathing and dressing. Practical nurses work under the direct supervision of registered nurses and physicians to create a full spectrum of patient care. The CCIU program gives students the sound education and clinical experience needed to create a successful nurturing career.
How Long Does the Program Take?
CCIU provides students several flexible scheduling options so they can pursue their further education in a way that fits with their other work and family obligations. A full time option allows students to complete the program in twelve months. Courses begin in the fall and winter and are offered four days per week. A second option is completed in 23 months. These courses begin in the spring and are offered four evenings per week, making this an ideal option for those students with full-time jobs or family obligations that may prevent them from being able to attend the nursing program during the day.
CCIU Admissions Requirements
The Practical Nursing program through Chester County Intermediate Unit has specific admission requirements that must be met before interested students can begin their course of study. First, applicants must hold a high school diploma or its equivalent from an accredited institution and provide transcripts from said institutions. In addition to this proof of previous education, interested applicants must also show themselves as able to benefit from advanced learning through both testing and personal interviews. The applicant must present references and recommendations that demonstrate ability to learn as well as moral character. After these documents have been submitted the applicant must pass entrance exams with satisfactory scores.
Background and criminal checks must show the applicant to have no history of specific crimes including physical acts of violence and child abuse. Finally, a physical examination and necessary vaccinations will ensure good health needed to engage in medical training. Once all of these requirements are successfully completed the student can enroll. Proper CPR certification must be acquired before or during enrollment for the student to remain eligible.
Practical Nursing Course of Study
The complete Practical Nursing program consists of over 700 hours of classroom learning and clinical experiences. The course of study is divided into four levels, each of which builds upon the learning of the previous level to create a well-rounded and balanced program. Classroom-based lectures and hands-on clinical learning are provided concurrently, with the clinical training being offered in area hospitals and community care centers.
Level I
The first level of Practical Nursing training is the most course-heavy of the four. It includes studies in Fundamentals of Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, and Foundations in Nursing Education. This level creates the basis for learning centered on the core responsibilities of practical nursing.
Level II
The second level includes an introduction to Medical-Surgical nursing. This includes the specialized type of nursing that must be offered to surgical and oncology patients as well as those with certain diseases. Following the introduction, students engage in furthered learning of certain scientific principles related to treatment of such patients.
Level III
Level III provides training in Maternal and Child nursing which focuses on the care of women during pregnancy, delivery and the post-partum period. This course also offers experience in childhood concerns. This level also furthers the learning of Medical-Surgical nursing.
Level IV
The fourth level of the Practical Nursing program prepares students for the issues associated with the nursing field with a course regarding leadership issues, licensing and like topics. This level also offers a course in IV methodology and the final installment of Medical-Surgical nursing instruction.
Completion of this program will prepare students to take licensing exams required by state legislation in order to enter the professional field.

Chatham University Nursing School Review

Chatham University offers three degrees within its nursing program. These degrees build upon each other to further the education of interested students beyond the level of registered nurse to holding a doctorate in nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN)
The RN to BSN program through Chatham’s College for Continuing and Professional Studies continues the previous education of an RN to provide her with a Bachelor’s degree. A full time student within this program can complete the requirements and earn the RN to BSN degree within two semesters. In order to gain admittance into the program an interested applicant must provide the school with official transcripts from all previous institutions of learning, a completed application and a copy of her current nursing license. The program includes three components: liberal arts electives, clinical experience and core nursing requirements.
Liberal arts electives fulfill the general education requirements of a Bachelor’s degree. These courses are offered online so that students can them at their convenience. Clinical experiences provide tactical knowledge that is crucial to a nurse’s success and effectiveness. In order to complete these requirements students engage in a self-directed placement process that enables them to fulfill clinical experiences. Students must also complete a clinical project each semester. Arrangements for clinical components of courses must be put into place at least two weeks prior to the start of the course. The total program requires the completion of 120 credits. Though transfer credits are accepted, the core nursing courses, along with 45 general education credits, must be completed at Chatham. Interested students with certain educational backgrounds have the option of choosing an accelerated completion program to earn their degrees faster.
Master of Science in Nursing
The Masters degree in Nursing advances the education of a BSN to allow successful graduates to pursue leadership positions or positions in teaching nursing. Those seeking a Master of Science in Nursing degree must first earn a BSN. The Master’s program consists of ten courses that are completed two every seven weeks as to allow students to earn the degree in approximately ten months. Students complete five core MSN courses and must select between a Leadership/Management or Education Specialty track for the remaining five courses.
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Chatham University offers a fully accredited Doctor of Nursing Practice program that allows students holding a Master’s degree in nursing to further their education in order to become experts in the nursing field as to pursue high leadership and educational positions. The 27 credit curriculum can be completed by a full time student over three semesters. In order to obtain admission into the program students must present a completed application, an admissions essay, two letters of professional recommendation and a copy of their valid RN license. Due to the post-Master’s nature of the doctoral program, applicants must also provide evidence of 500 supervised clinical experience hours. An applicant’s portfolio must be substantiated through appropriate documentation for acceptance.

The Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit prepares its adult students to pursue careers as licensed practical nurses. These nurses provide basic bedside care to patients of all types. Students are able to attend classes and perform clinical experiences locally with experienced faculty to achieve their goals as quickly as possible.
How Long Does the Program Take?
The Licensed Practical Nursing program from Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit is designed for intensive study during a short period. The entire program can be completed in one year. Courses begin and end each August, and courses are held weekdays from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. Thought the clinical experience aspect of the program is generally fulfilled in the mornings but occasionally these experiences must be completed in the evenings. If there is enough interest in pursuing a part time program of study, there may be offered a two year course of study for those wanting to further their learning while also fulfilling work and family obligations.
CSIU Admission Requirements
For admission into the LPN program at CSIU interested applicants must submit a completed application along with official copies of high school transcript or G.E.D. scores, or any transferable college credits. Also required are two letters of recommendation. These letters should be from appropriate references that are able to cite not only experience in the nursing field and academic or professional merit, but also moral character. Though there are not strict requirements as to who these references must be, it is preferable that these letters come from teachers or medical professionals, and they may not come from any members of the applicant’s family.
Tracks and Courses
Applicants to the LPN program have a choice of two educational tracks to complete their nursing instruction. Track 1 requires that all necessary courses be completed at CSIU, while Track 2 allows those applicants that have already completed the general education courses associated with the LPN program to take only the nursing courses at CSIU. Students with prior experience in the health care field may be able to earn advanced placement through faculty approval. Both the full and part time programs consist of over 1,500 hours of combined lecture, clinical and laboratory study. The full time course of study is divided into 3 progressive levels, while the part time program is divided into 6. At the end of such programs successful graduates will earn a certificate of completion. They will be prepared for the licensing exam that will enable them to seek careers in the professional field.
A career as an LPN enables graduates to work in several areas. LPNs can seek private employment, work in medical practices, hospitals or institutions, or enter military duty. The nursing degree completion program focuses on preparing nurses in theory, and has limited clinical experience recognizing the clinical experience that the RN has developed in practice. Courses in the program focus on the following six areas: community-based care, multiculturalism, health promotion, nursing research, health care policy and nursing theory. The RN to BSN program is a fast track program which can be completed in approximately 16 months.
Step-Ahead
The Step Ahead program allows nursing students to earn graduate academic credits in nursing while completing the BSN. Admission requirements to the Step Ahead program include a minimum score of 1100 on the SAT, and a minimum high school and college sophomore GPA of 3.5. Students must maintain a 3.1 GPA to continue enrollment in the program. Nursing students in the Step-Ahead program graduate with a BSN and 11nursing academic credits towards future graduate coursework.

Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Nursing Program Review
Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County (CTCLC) is based in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The center began in 1973 as a high school. Currently, the center operates primarily as a high school, but also offers vocational and technical programs for adults. Adult programs award certificates and train students for licensing examinations often in as little as one year or less. The primary purpose of Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County is to prepare students for entry-level careers in a specific vocation. The school is a public institution which serves just fewer than 100 students in 9 school districts. Career Technology Center was accredited by the Bureau of Career and Technical Education of the Pennsylvania State Board of Vocational Education until 2009.

The LPN program can be completed in 52 weeks. Nurse Aide
The Nurse Aide certification program is offered through continuing education. Course offerings and times vary each semester and thus can accommodate differing schedules. The summer course has classes Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 2:30 and in spring Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm. The nurse aid program requires a clinical rotation of 45 hours and prepares nurses to work a variety of shifts.
Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County Continuing Education Programs
Other continuing education courses for nurses such as the LPN Refresher Course are offered at Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County. The course prepares LPNs re-entering the practice after some time off with training and skills necessary to return to nursing as a competent fully-functional nurse. Health Occupations Technology Program
The Health Occupations Technology program operates on three levels and includes a Nurse Aide curriculum component in Level II of the program. In Level 1, students explore a variety of healthcare careers including dental assisting and learn basic healthcare technology. In Level II, students obtain healthcare experience and are prepared to take the PA State Nurse Aide Certification and complete a 60 hour clinical practicum. Faculty members of the Community College of Allegheny County teach nursing courses while California University of Pennsylvania faculty members teach general education courses. Admission to the nursing program is selective and applicants are accepted until October the year before the program commences, however applicants are accepted and encouraged to apply as early as July. Admission requirements to the RN program include a high school diploma or GED, minimum 2.8 GPA and completion of a biology, chemistry and algebra course with a minimum grade of “C.” Students who do not meet the required GPA of the nursing program may take 12 units of coursework at the college level and earn a minimum GPA of 2.8. Entering nursing students must earn satisfactory scores on standardized tests in English, Reading and Math. The nursing program can be completed in 2 years (four semesters). Upon completion of the nursing program, students receive an AAS, a type of ADN for students pursuing the nursing vocation rather than a four-year degree. Students are encouraged to progress through the program by taking courses in the summer, and between nursing years one and two to reduce the course load. Students take the National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse (RN).
Advanced Placement Standing for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
LPNs and transfer students from other nursing programs may apply for admission to the nursing program. LPNs and transfer students should note the difference in admission date for the advanced standing application. Both LPNs and transfer students earn advanced standing in the nursing program through satisfactory scores on nursing examinations. Required nursing courses include a nursing introductory course in which LPNs and transfer students should earn a 75% or higher score. Students who are granted advanced standing are eligible to enter the nursing program in the second semester, thus completing the RN program in seven semesters. Upon completion of the AAS Nursing program students receive an AAS in Nursing and are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.
Optional Three Year Curriculum Plan
It is recommended that students entering the nursing program directly from high school without college experience enroll in the three year curriculum plan. Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing (WPHSON), commonly referred to as West Penn Hospital School of Nursing, is based in Pittsburgh and part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System. Students have several opportunities to pursue higher nursing education in addition to the diploma program including an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing), BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) or MSN (Master of Science in Nursing). The school offers many amenities to students, including being one of very few diploma programs to offer on-campus housing. The school also offers a daycare, financial aid, and a STAR (Simulation, Teaching and Academic Research) center which provides an opportunity for students to develop clinical skills in a “virtual-hospital” environment. Nursing courses at West Penn Hospital School of Nursing are delivered in partnership with Clarion University staff.
Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing Undergraduate Nursing Programs
RN (Registered Nurse) Program
West Penn Hospital School of Nursing offers a nursing diploma program that gives students the opportunity to have patient interaction within 4 weeks of beginning nursing education. Admission requirements to the RN program include a minimum 2.5 GPA, a rank within the top two-fifths of the class, a high school diploma or GED (including course requirements in chemistry and algebra) and satisfactory scores on standardized tests. The RN program can be completed in 22 months.
The nursing program is designed to be completed in 4, 10-week terms. Students complete courses in community, family, pediatric and mental health nursing. Students in the program complete clinical experience in a variety of settings including West Penn Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Upon completion of the program, students receive a diploma in nursing and are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, to become a Registered Nurse (RN).
AS (Associate of Science) in Allied Health
Students enrolled in the Diploma program at West Penn Hospital School of Nursing may concurrently enroll in the AS degree program in Allied Health through Clarion University. Upon completion of the program, nurses will receive a diploma from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing and an AS from Clarion University.
BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) and MSN (Master of Science in Nursing)
Nursing students at West Penn Hospital School of Nursing have the opportunity of to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nursing through Clarion University. The BSN program may begin upon completion of the ADN program and is earned through Clarion University. Students may also earn an MSN through a joint program between Clarion and Edinboro universities.

Citizens School of Nursing Program Review
Citizens School of Nursing (CSN, CSON) is part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System. The school is based in New Kensington, PA and was founded in 1913. The Citizens School of Nursing is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board School of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Over 100 students are served at Citizens School of Nursing each year.
Nursing Programs
The Citizens School of Nursing offers a nursing diploma program and is sponsored by Allegheny Valley Hospital. The school of nursing holds memberships in the Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania and the Hospital and Healthcare Association of Pennsylvania (HAP). Citizens School of Nursing is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and also accredited by the Joint Commission. The school prides itself in a low student to faculty ratio and in the convenience and size of its facilities.

Nursing Diploma Program
Citizens School of Nursing offers a two-year diploma program including 630 hours of coursework and 1350 hours of clinical experience.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the nursing program requires a high school diploma or GED. In general students should have completed the following 16 Carnegie Units in high school:
English-4 units
Social Sciences-3 units
Electives-5 units
Math-2 Units
Science-2 Units
Applicants to the nursing program who are deficient in any of the required courses, which include Algebra, Biology or Chemistry may be admitted to the nursing program provisionally. Students should also submit scores for the SAT and are required to take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic School) which is administered by the school.
The nursing diploma program at Citizens School of Nursing can be completed in two years. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, to obtain licensure as an RN (Registered Nurse).
Advanced Standing in the Nursing Program
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and transfer students-including students with college coursework and transfers from other nursing programs may apply for advanced standing in the nursing program. Students transferring from a college are required to submit official transcripts and a course description for each course which the student seeks to transfer. Students who seek to transfer from another nursing program are only eligible to do so if the transfer will be complete within a year of leaving the previous nursing program. In order to transfer to Citizens School of Nursing, previous nursing students should submit official transcripts, a letter explaining circumstances of transfer and a letter of recommendation from the director of the previous nursing program. LPNs seeking a transfer should have a score of 65% or higher on the National League for Nursing Mobility 1 Book 1 exam, official transcripts, an employment evaluation, proof of employment experience and additional professional reference.
Educational Mobility (BSN)
Penn State University has partnered with Citizens School of Nursing to offer an education mobility program. Graduates of the nursing diploma program at Citizen’s School of Nursing are eligible to apply for the BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing) degree program at Penn State University. The BSN program will allow qualified graduates of Citizens School of Nursing to receive advanced standing in the BSN program.
