Graduates are prepared to sit for the state licensing exams that qualify them for immediate employment.

Licensed Practical Nursing Program

Of the approximately 100 students that are admitted into the program each year, only 70 graduate. This demonstrates the intensity of the program, and its determination to progress only those students who are passionate about nursing and who will fulfill the responsibilities and roles of an LPN with confidence and competence. The Licensed Practical Nursing Program through the Delaware County Intermediate Unit acts both as a means to pursue gainful employment in the fast-paced medical field, but also as a bridge to lead students to further degrees of education. As the education progresses, so do the opportunities of advanced careers.

Instruction

Students are taught in both classroom lecture settings and through clinical experiences. These clinical experiences, offered in area hospitals and facilities, are directly related to the theory discussed during the lecture portion of the course and enable the students to enjoy hands-on learning and practice to develop and hone skills. Through the unique cooperation of DCIU with area medical facilities students are also given the opportunity to hear guest lecturers and attend nursing conferences to learn more in-depth about specialty topics.

Community Involvement

Nursing is not just about performing medical tasks, but rather about developing relationships and touching the lives of other people. Delaware County Intermediate Unit understands this important role and encourages students of the Nursing Program to be involved in their community through a variety of projects and programs. Every graduating class is required to plan and implement a community service project during their Winter Break. The pediatric rotation also finds students participating at a local school fair. The program has also recently aligned themselves with the Girl Scouts of America to provide a cooperative learning experience for the scouts and the nursing students. Through such activities as merit badge earning nights the two groups are able to offer each other valuable learning and interactive opportunities.

Course of Study

The LPN program is offered in four progressive levels. These levels of instruction build upon each other to reach its greatest complexity in the final courses prior to graduation. Level I introduces students to the most basic of nursing information as well as fundamentals of Math that will allow students to gain early understanding of administering medications. The more difficult concepts begin in Level II with the introduction of nutrition and Medical Surgical Nursing as well as mental health concepts. The third level builds upon the Medical Surgical Nursing concepts and focuses on Obstetrical Nursing and Pediatrics.

Level IV is the most aggressive of the levels. Advanced concepts in Medical Surgical Nursing are presented, along with discussions of Mental Retardation and Psychiatric Nursing and the special needs of Gerontological patients.

Successful graduates from the Practical Nursing Program at DCIU will have the confidence to take licensing exams that will qualify them to seek employment in the fast-paced medical field. Practical Nurses are in exceptionally high demand, and the workforce is competitive. Graduates of DCIU will be able to rise above their competitors to achieve placement in hospitals, medical offices and other settings.

Community Health Systems Nursing Program Review

Since its beginning Community Health Systems Inc. has become one of the leading operators of hospitals in the nation. With more than 131 hospitals spread across the country, CHS offers needed healthcare to areas that lack the services. This system is dedicated to creating high-quality hospitals in areas that do not have the financial resources that make recruitment of skilled physicians and staff easy by assisting these institutions in developing highly rated teams.

Nursing Programs

In order to create the strongest, most effective hospital staff Community Health Systems (CHS) Inc. offers continuous training and education opportunities. These opportunities allow all those working within the hospitals to remain on the cutting edge of their fields and continue to provide the utmost of care to patients. This training is offered in a variety of formats. Nurses are a critical part of the healthcare system and CHS encourages their nurses to train throughout their career to improve themselves and offer ever-increasing standards of care to patients.

The “Community” College

The small “college” within the Community Health System offers continuing educational opportunities in the form of online courses. These courses cover both clinical and non-clinical topics.

Nursing Training Options

Nurses do not perform just one task or have just one responsibility so it is important that there are many options available for these medical professionals to learn as much as they can about the particular specialization they wish to fulfill. Within CHS, these opportunities include an online nursing program, training in OB fetal monitoring, a program for Essentials of Critical Care Orientation, and proprietary nursing training. These training opportunities allow nurses to enhance their knowledge and skill so they can better perform tasks associated with each area of patient care.

Educational Assistance

CHS understands that a good education can be expensive, making it inaccessible for many people. The system does not believe that this should make learning a luxury exclusive only to those who can afford it, though. Because of this CHS offers financial assistance to those wishing to further their education. Those employees wanting to enhance their job-specific skills can apply for tuition reimbursement through Community Health Systems Inc. This reimbursement applies to approved programs of study through accredited institutions.

Another form of financial assistance is the Nursing Scholarship Program. Through this program full and partial scholarships are awarded to future students wishing to attend Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse programs through approved schools. Special scholarships specifically for those Licensed Practical Nurses wanting to advance to the statues of Registered Nurse are also offered.

Chief Nursing Officer Training Program

A Chief Nursing Officer is an important part of a medical team, and achieving this status requires a firm foundation of learning enhanced by regular training. Through corporate-sponsored courses at CHS Chief Nursing Officers a program of enhancing skills and continual learning. Each year CNOs are required to attend a large meeting as well as smaller regional meetings each quarter.

Through computer-based training and regular conferences the employees at Community Health Systems Inc. are prepared to perform at their peak. At the numerous hospitals run by the system across the nation physicians, nurses and other staff are held to high standards. The educational opportunities offered ensure that these professionals will continue to provide the best treatment and care to patients and their loved ones.

Community College of Philadelphia Nursing Program Review

The Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) offers its students the opportunity to gain crucial education and training to seek employment in the competitive workforce. With over 70 programs, including degree and certification courses as well as non-degree continuing education programs, CCP provides numerous options for the young student just beginning his professional life or the older student looking for a new path.

Nursing Program

The rigorous Nursing Program at the Community College of Philadelphia was designed to prepare students to successfully pass the exams necessary to become fully licensed Registered Nurses. RNs are in very high demand for their critical role in the healthcare system, and the need is projected to continuously grow in the coming years. This creates the need for highly qualified and skilled individuals prepared to embark on the journey of nurse education as to fill these much-needed roles. The CCP Nursing Program prides itself on being based on four core values: Service, Scholarship, Support and Excellence. These values are exhibited in the over 3,000 graduates that have completed the program since its beginning in 1968.

Registered Nurse Degree Program

A Registered Nurse works closely with patients, generally with the assistance of Practical Nurses, and under the supervision of a physician. These nurses prepare and implement treatment plans after engaging in evaluation and analysis of patients with a variety of medical concerns. An RN must engage in further education than an LPN, which leads to greater responsibility and a high-paying career. Successful graduation from this program earns graduates an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Nursing.

How Quickly is the Degree Earned?

Students are required to take a minimum of 64 total credit hours in order to graduate. These credit hours are comprised of both general education and core nursing courses that provide a well-rounded and balanced program of study. Though they can be completed in four semesters covering two calendar years, students are required to complete the entire degree program within four calendar years of admission.

Interested applicants already holding a valid Practical Nursing license are eligible for advanced placement into the program. Others who may also obtain advanced placement are honorably discharged servicemen and applicants who have had at least one year of previous nursing education. Advanced placement enables these students to earn their degree faster, thereby utilizing their previous experience to gain employment more quickly. In order to earn advanced placement, the CCP must be provided with adequate documentation of previous nursing experience and transcripts, as well as applicable licenses. Applicants must pass entrance exams and take co requisite courses that prepare them for the rest of the program.

Admission Requirements

There are several requirements that must be fulfilled by applicants seeking admission into the Nursing Program. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent from an approved institution or entity, and provide proof of success in particular courses including Biology and Chemistry. As the physical and mental health of a nurse are crucial for the satisfactory fulfillment of the nursing role, applicants must submit documentation of a comprehensive physical exam including necessary immunizations and a thorough drug screening, and criminal and background checks. Certain offenses, including felonies, drug offenses and child abuse, preclude the student from admission into the program.

Students are also expected to provide proof of CPR certification and health insurance prior to enrolling in the program.

Course of Study

The Nursing Program course of study at CCP is designed as a progressive track. The knowledge and skill offered by each course is meant to build upon that of previous courses, becoming more difficult and complex and completion of the program approaches. The order of these courses is important and students seeking advanced placement will be expected to exhibit adequate mastery of the topics presented in those courses the student intends to “skip”.

Each semester will be comprised of general education courses as well as nursing instruction. These courses, including English, Math and Biology, will further prepare the student for professional success after graduation. Nursing courses are taught in both classroom lecture and clinical experience formats. Clinical experiences allow students to gain knowledge though hands-on experimentation and application of classroom learning. To remain in the program and progress appropriately, students must maintain a grade of no lower than “C” for all courses.

Graduation from this program prepares students for the rigorous licensure process which enables them to begin careers in the fast-paced world of nursing. Nurses are needed in a wide array of settings including regular medical practices, long-term facilities and hospitals. Completion of this program also lays the foundation for even further learning, as a graduate then has the option of pursuing a Master or Doctoral degree.

Community College of Allegheny County Nursing Program Review

Beyond just basic education, the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) offers a complete college campus experience including social organizations, athletics, and clubs. Students can attend classes on one of six campuses, in neighborhood satellite locations, or even online for ultimate convenience.

Nursing Program

The Nursing Program at CCAC prepares students to pursue careers in the medical field, as well as providing a foundation for furthered education and professional advancement. Admission to any of the courses of study within the program is dependent on several educational factors, but also on moral character and physical health. A comprehensive criminal background check will be performed to ensure that no offenses have occurred that would preclude the applicant from being a part of the program. Fully physical and mental examinations must also be completed, with documentation of physical health and necessary immunizations. As a part of this physical exam applicants will also undergo extensive drug screenings. These screenings test for a wide array of prescription and recreational drugs and are used for the strict elimination of any applicant or student that is found to be illegally using a controlled substance.

Associate of Science Degree in Nursing

An Associate of Science Degree in Nursing enables graduates to take the exams necessary for licensure as a Registered Nurse. RNs provide close medical care to patients in a variety of healthcare settings. The two year program covers four semesters comprised of both theoretical and clinical instruction. These semesters build upon each other in intensity and complexity, making the specific order in which the courses are taken critical to the proper development of the program. Students will complete a minimum of 68 credits in liberal arts general education and core nursing courses. Each course will be made up of classroom lecture and applicable clinical experiences. Successful graduates from this program will be prepared to sit for state licensing exams required to seek gainful employment.

LPN to RN Option

Already licensed Practical Nurses can enter the Associate’s Degree program at the Community College of Allegheny County with advanced standing. This advanced standing assures that these qualified nurses will be able to further their career options in a shorter time than those entering the program without experience. Applicants must meet all of the prerequisites required for the program, as well as demonstrating understanding and skill in the areas covered by the early parts of the course of study. A transition course must also be passed to show competence in areas such as theory and clinical knowledge. An applicant has two tries to complete and pass the transition course. The second attempt may be dependent on space availability and may not be immediately offered should the applicant be unsuccessful during a first attempt at advanced placement.

Campus Options

The Community College of Allegheny County has several campus options from which to choose. Each campus offers a slightly different version of the Nursing Program, including the timing of the courses and the venues for clinical experiences. Practical Nursing Program

Practical nurses are among the most-desired professions in the medical field. As the need for these professionals increases so does the demand for excellence. The CCCC prepares students to compete in this challenging world.

How Long Does the Nursing Program Take?

The Practical Nursing Program at the Clarion County Career Center is offered as either a full time or part time course of study. The full time program takes one calendar year and begins each year in September. The part time program takes two years and begins every other year in November. Students electing to study part time are able to continue working and fulfilling family obligations while also pursuing their education. This makes this program an ideal choice for adults looking for a career change or advancement.

Admission Requirements

In order to gain admission into the Practical Nursing program at CCCC, applicants must submit a completed application and pass evaluation examinations as well as pass criminal and background checks. As moral character is important to the function of a nurse, there are certain criminal offenses that will prohibit an applicant from taking part in the nursing program. These offenses include murder, assault, child abuse, drug use and other physical and moral offenses. Interested applicants seeking advanced placement must successfully show competence in clinical and nursing knowledge through testing and clinical evaluations. These students will be able to complete the program of study more quickly.

Course Progression

The Practical Nursing Program is designed to introduce core and specialized information in a combination of classroom and hands-on clinical experience formats. Taught in three levels, the program builds upon itself to progressively introduce more difficult materials as the students move toward graduation. At completion of this program students will be prepared to enter the nursing work force and provide basic bedside care to a variety of patients.

Level I

Level I of the Practical Nursing Program lays the foundation for the skills and principles taught during the rest of the program. Students will take Introduction to Nursing, a course that outlines the basic elements of a nursing career. Through this course students will learn to evaluate one’s life and surroundings in such a way that they will learn to “think like a nurse” in a critical manner. Students will also learn the basics of communication skills essential for being an effective nurse.

Students will also take Nursing Principles and Practice, a course that begins teaching both theoretical and clinical components of nursing. During this course students will be introduced to a variety of cultural issues that influence the practice and effect of nursing, especially as is applicable to the life cycle.

A general education course, Basic Science will reiterate fundamentals of scientific thought regarding such topics as anatomy and physiology. Finally, the important concerns related to nursing a patient being given drug therapy will be addressed in the course Nursing Considerations for Drug Therapy.

Level II

Throughout Level II of the Practical Nursing learning experience, students will focus on specialized forms of nursing. The Childbearing Experience is a course that goes beyond just the basic information of nursing a pregnant woman, or one that has just given birth. Rather, this course discusses the various concerns of a woman prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, during childbirth and immediately after. Care for the new baby is also discussed, as is the importance of the family role, especially motherhood and fatherhood, in the entire experience of childbearing.

The course Child-Adolescent Nursing builds on the principles taught for caring for a newborn and applies it to the growing needs of young children and adolescents. This includes nutritional, emotional and psychosocial needs, as well as approaching treatment methods such as drug therapy. The clinical aspect of this course will include witnessing the operation of various agencies that serve such patients.

Adult Nursing I is a course devoted to the concerns of the young adult. This course focuses not just on the physical health and monitoring of the patients but the psychosocial, psychological and sociological issues impacting young adults today. This course offers a strong clinical element as well as critical think exercises in applying acquired skills to true life situations such as dietary adjustments and evaluating conflicting treatment elements.

Level III

The final level of the Practical Nursing program completes the learning of the human lifecycle and prepares the student for the realities of a career in nursing. Adult Nursing II approaches the particular nursing needs of the middle aged adult, whereas Adult Nursing III speaks to the needs of the older adult, including concerns regarding end of life. Adult Nursing III in particular focuses on the inclusion of the significant other in the treatment planning and implementation process.

Leadership and Trends in Practical Nursing is a course that explores issues related to the contemporary concerns facing nurses such as ethics, responsibility and communication. During this course students will also prepare extensively for state licensing with practice exams and extensive laboratory and clinical experiences.

Successful completion of the Practical Nursing program at the Clarion County Career Center will give graduates the opportunity to seek immediate employment as an entry level nurse working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse as well as physicians and other medical professionals. This basis of education can also prepare students for furthered education and more advanced career opportunities.

Canadian Valley Technology Center Nursing Program Review

Canadian Valley Technology Center (CVTC, CV Tech) caters to the majority of the Grady and Canadian counties. Right now, the school district has campuses in El Reno, Chickasha, Yukon, West Oklahoma City and Mustang areas, though they have a small training facility at Tuttle, too.

Canadian Valley Technology Center – Nursing

This program has been approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and has been accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech.

Practical Nursing

This program can only be taken at Canadian Valley Technology Center’s El Reno and Chickasha campuses and is an open-entry and open-exit individualized program. This means that students can progress as quickly or as slowly as they choose to. In general, though, this program usually takes 16 to 18 months to complete.

In a nutshell, traditional PN programs usually require students to start and finish their courses at the exact same time. The individualized program available at Canadian Valley Technology Center, on the other hand, allows students to work at their own pace and time while being monitored by the faculty. Although the schedule is personalized, students will need to take at least 24 hours a week.

Before anything else, students will need to schedule themselves in for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and get a score of at least 44% in Math and 70% in Reading.

After that, students will need to complete the application form. To apply, they will also need to have a high school diploma, a proof of residency, and documentation of their immunizations.

Students who wish to study at the Canadian Valley Technology Center are highly advised to buy an iPad 2 because there are a lot of great medical applications on it. In fact, the Canadian Valley Technology Center believes that the ability of students to use this particular technology would be an absolute necessity in order to become effective and successful nurses in the future.

When it comes to previous health-related education or work, there are two options available for students.

The first option gives students the chance to get credit for any previous health-related work experience that they might have – provided they have worked for at least a year for full-time in the last five years. This experience needs to be validated, as well. However, once approved, students will be able to showcase clinical goals and test out of various theory goals in a shorter amount of time. This means that they will be able to finish the program faster, too.

The second option gives students the chance to get credit for Physiology, Anatomy, Medical Terminology, or other technology center or college classes that meet the same goals of Canadian Valley Technology Center’s program. They will have to submit their official transcripts, though, as well as have a minimum grade of C in all of their courses. Reference letters would also be required here.

Graduates of this program will be allowed to sit for the national licensure examination to become practical nurses (NCLEX-PN). This computerized test is offered every day at the Sylvan Learning Centers in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

Grants

Grants refer to financial aid that students do not need to repay and are usually offered to undergraduates depending on their needs, enrollment status and attendance costs. There are different kinds of grants out there, including federal Pell grants, federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG) and Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grants (OTAG).

Loans

Since the Health Care reform was passed, Stafford Loans have changed to Direct Lending.

Federal Perkins Loans

These loans are given to students with the most need for them, but can only be given if funds exist to do so. Most of the time, students can get up to $3000 in loan amounts, though.

Federal Work Study (FWS)

Federal Work Study means that undergraduates will need to have jobs in order to get financial aid. How much the awarded amount is will depend on the student’s financial needs, though. However, if eligible, they can work in various participating campus departments or offices.

Getting an FWS doesn’t necessarily guarantee a job, though. Every department will choose the student that they want to give the job to from the pool of eligible applicants provided from the office of financial aid.

In general, the chosen students will get paid two times a month and can pick up their checks at the business office.

Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program (OHLAP)

This program exists for students from the 8th to the 10th grade who need help paying for their education in college and whose family’s annual income is under $50,000. To apply for this program, students have to take specific courses and pass them with good grades.

National Guard Tuition Waiver

This tuition waiver is for undergraduates students with good standings at the Oklahoma National Guard. To apply, students will need to submit an application every semester and enroll in a baccalaureate program with at least six hours of study in the spring and summer semesters or at least three hours in the summer. Students can get this waiver for up to 6 years of 18 credit hours every semester.

G.I. Bill

Veterans and veteran dependents can apply for certain educational benefits through this program.

Native American Tribal Assistance

A lot of recognized civilized tribes provide financial aid to students with Native American blood, as long as they can verify their descent. To apply, students will need to complete the necessary application form first and then get in touch with their local tribal agency to get financial aid.
