West Virginia Nursing Schools

There are over 30 different accredited nursing schools in West Virginia offering a mix of degrees – from Associate’s to RN to BSN programs, to APRN specialties and Doctorate degrees.

Like Virginia and other states in the surrounding area, West Virginia is feeling the crunch when it comes to the nursing shortage. Worldwide, it’s estimated that there will be a shortage of 800,000 nurses by 2012, so schools all around the world are looking for ways to graduate as many qualified RNs, LPNs, and APRNs as possible, as quickly as possible.

West Virginia has some urban areas, as well as some very rural areas. This means that much of the state is underserved when it comes to medical personnel. This is bad news for hospitals in these areas, but great news for West Virginia nurses- there’s absolutely no shortage of employment opportunities for qualified nursing professionals, whether they are Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, or Nurse Midwives.

New Developments in West Virginia Nursing Education

Since schools and employers alike have worked hard to make nursing an attractive career option in the hopes of drawing new nursing students, a lot of prospective nursing students get stuck on waiting lists before being admitted to nursing programs.

Fortunately, West Virginia has largely been spared this problem. A lot of schools in the state don’t have a waiting list for their nursing programs, and have branched out and begun to offer distance learning and online education programs, accelerated degree programs, and other measures that allow them to reach the greatest number of students that they can.

Career Opportunities for West Virginia Nurses

West Virginia isn’t as big as other states, but it still has just as much variety when it comes to annual salaries for nurses. Nursing salaries can vary for a number of reasons, including
– Working in underserved, underfunded areas
– Working in small private practices, as opposed to large hospitals
– Working in poor rural or urban communities, as opposed to more affluent areas

For example, the median annual salary for a registered nurse in Charleston is around $59,000, which is a reflection of a range from $48,000 to $70,000. A registered nurse in Parkersburg, meanwhile, earns a median annual salary of around $62,000. All figures are from the BLS.

West Virginia Board of Nursing

West Virginia’s RN Board is the state’s regulatory body for all nursing activities within West Virginia. This makes the Board a valuable resource for nurses and nursing students looking for information on approved nursing schools and programs, licensing and examinations, disciplinary actions, industry news, and more. Both The West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses and The West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses can be reached via their websites, or at 101 Dee Drive, Charleston, WV, 25311.
