Virginia Nursing Schools
Virginia is a good-sized state that offers a wide range of educational and work experiences for nurses. There are affluent urban areas, underserved urban areas, well-to-do rural areas, and underserved rural areas alike. Virginia schools offer students a broad range of degree programs to choose from, from a diploma to a doctorate.
More advanced nursing degrees allow nursing students to become RNs or LPNs when compared to associate’s degrees, since students in these programs aren’t usually forced to sit on a waiting list. By contrast, Virginia’s associates in nursing programs are usually pretty crowded, so nursing students may have to face a long wait before being admitted.

The Nursing Landscape in Virginia
Table of Contents
Virginia is a pretty big state, and it covers a wide variety of geographical areas. A nurse in Virginia Beach will earn a median annual salary of about $62,000. Meanwhile, the same nurse in Roanoke would earn a median annual salary of $59,700, and the same nurse in Richmond would earn over $64,000.
It’s important to note that salary isn’t necessarily everything. Though salaries for nurses in Virginia can range from the low $50,000s to the high $70,000s, taking a lower salary to work in an underserved area often comes with loan repayment programs and other financial incentives not offered to nurses that go to work as staff nurses in big city hospitals. So, even though there’s a big difference in salary, it may still be worthwhile for Virginia nursing students to take a lower salary and take advantage of loan repayment schemes and other bonuses. All figures are from the BLS.
