Utah Nursing Schools

There are over 20 different accredited nursing schools located in Utah. Salt Lake City is the most popular, but there are other schools located at smaller cities and rural areas within Utah.

Utah is feeling the nursing shortage just as much as everywhere else. Though there are large areas of Utah that aren’t very densely populated, the state, as a whole, is still struggling to come up with enough nurses to fill all of the positions available in its hospitals, mental health facilities, nursing homes, and other health care centers.

Associate’s degrees and practical nursing diplomas are popular programs in Utah, which means that the state is also hurting for nursing educators, and qualified personnel for other positions that can only be filled by someone with an advanced degree.

So, if you want to get a nursing degree, but aren’t necessarily sure that you want to work in the crowded, hectic atmosphere of a large state hospital, Utah has an abundance of different work experiences for you to choose from.

Career Options for Utah Nurses

Utah’s geography and population distribution varies, and so does its nursing salaries. A registered nurse working as a hospital staff nurse in Salt Lake City can anticipate earning a median annual salary of $63,890, while a nurse in a similar position in Provo would earn closer to $61,000. These medians are taken from nursing salary ranges that span from the low $50,000s to the high $70,000s. All figures are from the BLS.

Utah Board of Nursing

Utah’s Board of Nursing is called the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing-Nursing, and acts as the governing body for the nursing industry in Utah. It can provide nurses, educators, and nursing students with information on licensing and examinations, approved nursing programs, continuing education, industry news, health care regulations, and more. The organization can be reached at the Heber M. Wells Building, 4th Floor, 160 East 300 South, Salt Lake City, UT, 84111.

Financial Assistance Information for Utah

Paying for tuition isn’t easy, and it’s one of the biggest factors keeping prospective nursing students out of school. To help students overcome this, Utah, its schools, and its nursing associations have developed a variety of ways for nursing students to get help repaying their student loans and covering their tuition bills. These include the Utah Health Care Workforce Financial Assistance Program, school scholarships, and employer-based tuition reimbursement programs.

These aren’t the only types of help available, either. Would-be nursing students should thoroughly research all of the tuition funding options available to them before enrollment, since certain students may be able to get the bulk of their tuition covered by various grants and scholarships.
