Pennsylvania Nursing Schools

Pennsylvania is a large and very diverse state with over 110 different nursing schools, encompassing everything from metropolitan Philadelphia, all the way to the Amish areas of Lancaster county.

This means that nurses have their pick of which nursing schools and degrees in PA, as well as what kind of career opportunities they’d like to pursue, whether they’re looking for a large city hospital with a big salary and sign on bonus, or a smaller hospital in a rural area with a good loan repayment program. Rural hospitals often have trouble courting the staff they need, so they often have a lot to offer nursing students in exchange for their willingness to forgo working for a city hospital.

Pennsylvania has plenty of different nursing schools – over 110 as we mentioned, with degree programs ranging from associate’s degrees to doctoral degrees. Below you will find a few featured online nursing schools that are currently accepting Pennsylvania applicants. They have a diverse set of nursing degrees, but all are online. Be sure to talk with their nursing department to get all of your specific questions answered on financial assistance, program length/availability, and career options for that degree.

PA Nursing Landscape

With the nursing shortage that’s being experienced just about everywhere in the world, Pennsylvania offers a number of different incentives for nursing students and graduates. These can vary depending on what school the student attends, what degree they pursue, and where they choose to work afterward. Loan forgiveness and repayment programs, employer-based tuition reimbursement programs, and scholarships, grants, and low interest loans are all common offerings within PA.

Some schools also have special incentives for new students with good enough Advanced Placement test scores, or older students that are going back for a second degree.

Career Options for Pennsylvania Nurses

Pennsylvania offers very diverse career opportunities, and everything from an upscale urban to a poor rural atmosphere. As a result, nursing salaries vary. A Philadelphia RN will earn nearly $70,000 median salary, while an RN all the way out in Lancaster will earn an average of $64,000. nurses in Erie will earn an average that’s actually below the national average, at $62,000. Pennsylvania’s median nursing salaries reflect an enormous range, of about $50,000, all the way up to $82,000. This doesn’t take other incentives, like loan repayment, sign on bonuses, or the monetary value of benefits packages, into account. All figures are from the BLS.

Pennsylvania Board of Nursing

All nurses and nursing students withing Pennsylvania will need to turn to the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing at some point. The Board of Nursing is a key resource for information on licensing and examination information, patient complaints, educational requirements for nurses, and more. The Board of Nursing can be reached via their website, or at P.O. 2649, Harrisburg, PA, 17105-2649.

A primary source of nursing scholarships and grants is the nursing school you attend.  Most programs offer general financial assistance as well as scholarships specifically for nursing students.  To learn more about available nursing scholarships, contact your nursing program or the financial aid office. Following is an example of an educational institution that offers nursing scholarships.

University of Pennsylvania
Students enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania have access to exceptional nursing scholarships and grants.  Undergraduate nursing students can apply for several scholarships with awards ranging from $10,000 to $30,000.  Even full-time graduate nursing students are eligible for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.  Students can contact the School of Nursing at (215) 898-8191 for additional information.

The following is an example of an employer-sponsored nursing scholarship program.

Alcoa Foundation
Graduating high school students who are interested in pursuing a nursing degree at an accredited college and have a parent employed by the Aluminum Company of America may be eligible for a nursing scholarship from the Foundation.  Scholarships are awarded based on academic scores and financial need.  Awards are $7,500 and are not renewable.  Applications are due to the Foundation by the end of October annually.  For current applications and guidelines, contact the Foundation at Alcoa Corporate Center, 201 Isabella Street, Pittsburgh, PA 1521 or by calling (412) 553-2348.

Box 691, Warren, PA 16365 or by calling (814) 726-9553.

Samuel L. Abrams Foundation
If you are a graduate of one of the 17 eligible public or parochial high schools in and around Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and have been accepted to an approved nursing program, you may be eligible for a nursing grant or interest free loan from the Foundation.  Undergraduate and graduate students who meet eligibility requirements and can demonstrate academic potential as well as financial need can apply.  Loans are to be repaid in equal monthly payments for five years beginning three months after graduation or termination from the nursing program.  Award amounts vary.  Applications are due by the end of May annually.  For applications and guidelines, contact the Foundation at P.O. Box 3053, Harrisburg, PA 17105 or call them at (717) 233-7927.
