Oregon Nursing Schools

Oregon offers an abundance of career opportunities for nurses, provided that they can enroll in and graduate from an approved nursing program.

In total, there are 24 accredited nursing schools in Oregon that are in our database. There is a mix of different degree levels and different specialty programs, and you should be able to find in-person, campus based classes as well as online classes.

Like many other areas of the U.S., Oregon is beginning to run into problems with shortages of nursing educators, and not enough good nursing programs to accommodate all of their would-be nursing students.

To help offset these issues, Oregon has instituted programs that allow working hospital employees, like unit clerks and other non-medical staff, to go back to stool to become nurses on their employer’s dime. There are also a few other programs in place to help nursing students afford schooling, including scholarships.

Career Options for Nurses in Oregon

Oregon is a pretty big state. Major metropolitan areas like Portland definitely need their share of nurses, but this shouldn’t be the only area where nursing students focus their attention. While large hospitals can offer things like generous sign-on bonuses, smaller hospitals in rural areas need nurses, too. There are also other sectors of the health care industry in Oregon that are hurting for qualified nurses, including nursing homes, emergency clinics, and colleges looking for nursing educators.

All of these are excellent career opportunities for nursing graduates, and should be seriously considered by any nursing student. Large hospitals may pay well, but they’re also often busy, stressful environments. These other career opportunities can give nurses valuable work experience in a calmer, less hectic atmosphere.

With a state the size of Oregon, there’s bound to be some variation in nursing salaries. A staff RN in Portland can reasonably expect to draw a median annual salary of $67,439. The same position in Eugene pays a median salary of $66,322. Meanwhile, a staff RN in Springfield can expect to earn a bit less, at $61,129. These medians reflect a range of incomes from $50,000, up to the low $80,000s, so Oregon nurses may find that they earn more or less than these numbers would suggest. All figures are from the BLS.

Oregon Board of Nursing

Oregon’s Board of Nursing is the main regulatory and directing body for nursing in Oregon state. This is the place to go for nurses and nursing students that need information on licensing, examinations, renewals, approved nursing programs, industry news, and anything else relating to the nursing industry. The Oregon State Board of Nursing can be reached at 800 NE Oregon Street, Box 25, Ste. 465, Portland, OR, 97232.
