North Carolina Nursing Schools
There are more than 70 different accredited nursing schools in North Carolina, with degree options at all levels, from associate’s to doctorate.
Nursing students in North Carolina have the good fortune to be able to take their pick from a variety of excellent nursing education programs, including those in the medical research facilities of Duke and the University of North Carolina. Once they graduate, North Carolina nursing students also get to take their pick from any number of jobs, from staff nursing positions in big city hospitals, to positions in smaller hospitals in rural areas of the state.
Because North Carolina hosts schools that are highly regarded, some North Carolina nursing programs can have wait lists a mile long. Fortunately, there are plenty of other good nursing schools and programs that students can choose from, rather than resign themselves to sitting on a wait list for ages.

Nursing Degrees by Program in North Carolina
Use the quick links below to view detailed information on the specific nursing degree you are considering. Includes degree info and school options in your state.
Outlook for Nursing in NC
Because North Carolina encompasses a variety of economic and geographical areas, there are some specific incentives in place to help draw new students to nursing programs, and place those students in underserved areas:
– Loan repayment or reimbursement programs offered by employers
– Scholarships offered by schools
– The Nurse Education Scholarship-Loan Program
– The Undergraduate Nurse Scholars Program
Career Options for North Carolina Nurses
Since North Carolina is a good sized state with a lot of socioeconomic variation, nursing salaries vary too. A registered nurse working in Wilmington can expect to earn a median income of around $59,000, below the national average. Meanwhile, the same nurse working in Charlotte can expect to earn around $65,000, and around $66,000 in Raleigh-Durham. These salaries reflect a range that covers $48,000 to $78,000, all according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Though there’s considerable variation in nursing salaries, in some cases it might be worthwhile for nursing students to take a lower salary to work in an underserved area. This is because agreeing to work in these areas often makes a nursing student eligible for aid programs, like the Nurse Education Scholarship-Loan Program, that they could not receive otherwise.
North Carolina Board of Nursing
North Carolina’s Board of Nursing is something that nurses and nursing students alike will need to rely on for information. The Board of Nursing can provide people with news on licensing and examination information, patient complaints and nurse disciplinary actions, approved nursing schools and programs, and more. The Board of Nursing can be reached via their website, or at 3724 National Drive, Suite 201, Raleigh, NC, 27602.
