Minnesota Nursing Schools

There are 58 different accredited nursing schools in Minnesota that are in our database. Schools are spread throughout the state, but as expected, are more highly concentrated in the more populated areas, especially the Twin Cities of Minneapolis & St. Paul, where there are nearly two dozen different nursing schools with accredited programs.

Table of Contents

Minnesota is home to the Mayo Clinic and St. Mary’s Hospital, and it can provide an unparalleled nursing education to motivated students. The state contains a lot of diverse areas, and plenty of great nursing schools, so students can pretty much take their pick of educational programs. Community colleges offer practical nursing and associate’s degrees, while four year schools offer everything from bachelor’s degrees to doctorates.

With so many excellent nursing programs and world-class facilities, you would expect Minnesota to be pretty much untouched by the worldwide nursing shortage. Unfortunately for Minnesota hospitals, this really isn’t the case. Many nurses are leaving the nursing profession in Minnesota for a lot of reasons, including occupational burnout and mandatory overtime.

Nursing is difficult, and poor working conditions make it even more so. This isn’t to say that nursing is an undesirable profession in Minnesota – far from it. In fact, Minnesota offers an incredibly wide array of work experiences for qualified nurses, so graduates can just about take their pick of employers after graduation.

Career Opportunities for Minnesota Nurses

Perhaps the most famous and accredited place of employment for nurses is the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The Mayo Clinic consistently receives high ratings across the board. U.S. News & World Report ranked Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. as the best hospital in the nation in their 2014-2015 rankings, and patients also rate their experience at the Mayo Clinic very highly.

In addition to the Mayo Clinic and state hospitals, Minnesota has a lot of smaller health care facilities that need good nurses, including community hospitals, medical centers, urgent care centers, and nursing homes, among others. Minnesota has a lot of very urban areas, but it has a number of rural areas as well, so nurses can also choose whether they’d prefer the fast-paced working environment of a busy practice in a city, or the sense of fulfillment gained from helping an underserved rural area.

Nursing salaries generally vary across a state, and Minnesota is no exception. An RN in Minneapolis can anticipate earning a median annual salary of $65,730, while an RN in Rochester can anticipate earning about $62,722. These medians reflect an overall salary range of around $52,000 to nearly $80,000, statewide. All figures are from the BLS.

Minnesota Board of Nursing

Minnesota’s Board of Nursing is an important resource for nursing students, nursing educators, and nurses. It can be turned to for information on licensing, examinations, industry news, health care regulations, continuing education requirements for advanced nurses, and more. The Minnesota Board of Nursing can be reached at 2829 University Avenue SE, Minneapolis, MN, 55414.
