Michigan Nursing Schools

There are over 60 different accredited nursing schools in Michigan, with options dispersed in large cities like Detroit, which has 8 nursing schools within its city limits (more in the suburbs), to smaller rural towns.

Table of Contents

Michigan is divided up into several different areas by the Great Lakes. As a result, its geography varies pretty widely, which allows it to encompass everything from very metropolitan areas, to very rural areas. This means that Michigan nursing students can pick from a variety of educational institutions when pursuing their nursing degree, and RNs and LPNs can pick from a variety of work experiences.

Michigan boasts nearly three dozen different nursing schools, from private colleges to large universities. Students can pursue everything from diploma programs to doctoral degrees in nursing, and may even become nurse educators as opposed to practicing nurses. All told, there are an abundance of different educational and employment opportunities afforded by Michigan’s nursing industry.

Michigan and the Nursing Shortage

Experts project that, by the year 2020, there will be a worldwide shortage of about 800,000 nurses. This shortage isn’t just limited to a few areas, either- even states like Michigan are feeling the pinch. The areas primarily affected are rural areas and small hospitals, since they’re generally unable to afford the generous sign-on bonuses and other incentives offered by large hospitals. That said, there are several reasons to choose a small hospital over a larger one, including mandatory overtime demanded by large hospitals, a lack of enough qualified staff to adequately handle shifts at large hospitals, and cutbacks in patient care at large hospitals. Financial aid and other incentives are also often put in place to lure nurses to underserved areas.

Career Options for Michigan Nurses

Nursing salaries vary all across Michigan. Some areas of the state pay a median salary that’s less than the national average, while others pay one that’s considerably higher. For example, a staff RN in Lansing can expect to earn a median annual income of $65,862. If that same nurse went to Muskegon, though would earn around $62,000. In Detroit, a staff RN can expect to earn around $68,000. Salaries are influenced by a variety of factors, including the size of hospitals in that area, and the overall cost of living. All figures are from the BLS.

Michigan Board of Nursing

Michigan’s Board of Nursing is a wealth of information for students and graduates alike. The Board of Nursing can provide would-be nurses, RNs, and LPNs with information on licengisng and examinations, approved nursing programs, educational requirements, the scope of nursing practice, financial aid and scholarship programs, and much more. The Michigan Board of Nursing can be reached care of the Bureau of Health Professions at Ottawa Towers North, 611 West Ottawa, 1st Floor, Lansing, MI, 48933 or on their website.

Following is an example of institutional-based nursing scholarships and grants.

University of Michigan
In addition to the general scholarship opportunities offered by the University, the School of Nursing offers a variety of scholarships and grants specifically for nursing students including the Rhonda Redding Russell Scholarship as well as the Esther Smith McCleery Scholarship.  Each scholarship has specific eligibility and submission requirements.  Award amounts vary as do deadlines.  For scholarship applications and guidelines, contact the School of Nursing, c/o University of Michigan, 400 North Ingalls, Ann Arbor, MI or by calling (734) 763-5985.

If you are a child of a full-time employee of Guardian Industries or one of its domestic subsidiaries, you may be eligible for a nursing scholarship.  You must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate nursing program.  Award amounts range from $1,000 to $8,000.  Completed applications are due by December annually and should be submitted to the Foundation at 2300 Harmon Road, Auburn Hills, MI 48326.

Community-Based Nursing Scholarships
Community organizations may offer nursing scholarships and grants for students enrolled in accredited nursing programs.  Students should research local nonprofit health care organizations as well as community groups such as the Kiwanis.  Another resource is community foundations and other local foundations.  Residency will be a requirement for the vast majority of these scholarship programs.  The Bay Area Community Foundation and Hammel-Delangis Scholarship Trust are two examples of community-based nursing scholarship programs.

Bay Area Community Foundation
The Foundation administers over 60 scholarships and grants for high school graduates and residents of Bay County in Michigan including the Bay County Medical Society Auxiliary Merit Fund.  Each scholarship program has its own guidelines and eligibility criteria.  Award amounts vary as do deadlines. In addition to the application, students are required to complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  For applications and a current list of scholarship opportunities, contact the Foundation at Pere Marquette Depot, 1000 Adams Street, Suite 200, Bay City, MI 48708 or by calling (989) 893-4438.
