Career Options for Maine Nurses
Any would-be nurse should visit Maine’s Board of Nursing for more information on becoming a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and more. As an RN, LPN, APRN, or CNA, you should have multiple options to seek full time employment in hospitals, medical clinics, Doctor’s offices, hospice care, psychiatric centers, or charitable organizations, like Doctors Without Borders.
Nurses in Maine receive very competitive salaries, usually between $35,000 to $67,000. This depends heavily on the area where the nurse is located, and what kind of health care facility they work for. It should be noted that even nurses whose pay scale is at the lower end of the spectrum generally receive excellent health benefits through their jobs, which may make nursing a worthwhile career option in itself. All figures are from the BLS.
Outlook
It’s estimated that there will be a shortage of over three hundred thousand nurses by the year 2015, and that number is expected to grow to over eight hundred thousand as little as five years later. Health care facilities are struggling to meet their nursing needs, so, for nursing students, it’s a job seekers market out there. Some hospitals are offering sign on bonuses in addition to a nurse’s regular pay and benefits.
