Though it was over a decade ago, Louisiana is still recovering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The devastation from that storm affected a lot of Louisiana’s health care infrastructure, leaving the state even more vulnerable to the effects of the worldwide nursing shortage. Louisiana has a number of good nursing schools, but they aren’t able to keep up with the state’s demand for nurses.

As a result, these campuses have launched some new education programs designed to help streamline the process of graduating new nurses, allowing schools to educate more pupils than they could before. Accelerated degree programs, distance learning programs, and other measures help nursing schools reach more pupils, and ultimately put more nurses into the facilities that need them the most.

New Orleans is a major metropolitan area in Louisiana, and Hurricane Katrina severely impacted how well its hospitals are able to serve its population. To compound the problem, a lot of areas of Louisiana are rural, and were underserved by medical facilities even before Katrina struck. Now, large city hospitals, community hospitals, private practices, and other medical facilities are scrambling to find enough staff to fit their patients’ needs.

Career Options for Louisiana Nurses

Louisiana nursing salaries vary pretty widely across the entire state. An RN working in a New Orleans hospital can earn a median annual salary of $66,872, above the national average. An RN working in Shreveport can earn a median annual salary of $59,683, which is actually below the national average. All figures are from the BLS.

Louisiana Nursing Programs & Funding

Some areas of Louisiana are low-income areas, which means that would-be students living in these places frequently have a hard time affording college tuition. In an effort to help draw more students to the state’s nursing programs, various financial aid measures have been enacted. There are other special programs as well, largely geared toward helping lure new graduates to Louisiana’s underserved rural areas. This helps nurses graduate with jobs already waiting for them, and helps these rural areas finally get the medical care they need.

Louisiana Board of Nursing

Louisiana’s Board of Nursing is a nurse’s best friend when it comes to getting accurate, up to date information on all things nursing related. The Board of Nursing can provide people with information on licensing, examinations, renewals, industry news, continuing education requirements, the Nurse Practice Act, and much more. The Board of Nursing can be reached at 5207 Essen Lane, Suite 6, Baton Rouge, LA, 70809 or on their website.
