Illinois Nursing Schools

There are 85 different accredited nursing schools in Illinois in our database. The most prevalent programs offered by Illinois nursing schools are the BSN (either a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing OR an RN to BSN program) and the MSN (Master’s of Science in Nursing), but there are Associate’s and Doctoral degrees as well.

Table of Contents

Illinois doesn’t have as many nursing programs as some other states of a similar size, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t provide a variety of educational experiences for its nursing students. Small community colleges provide ample opportunities for students to pursue practical nurse and associate’s degrees, while larger universities offer programs that run the gamut from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees.

After graduation, nursing students can look forward to being able to take their pick from a number of different employers. In addition to large hospitals located in metropolitan areas like Chicago, Illinois is also home to plenty of small community hospitals, private clinics, hospice care companies, mental health facilities, and many other businesses that need qualified nurses on staff.

Nursing Degrees in Illinois

Illinois nursing students are fortunate to have a number of different measures in place to help them pay for school, help understaffed hospitals court the qualified workers they need, and help schools bring in more nurse educators.

Many of these are for specific situations. The Nurse Educator Loan Forgiveness Program is designed to attract RN graduate students to nursing education programs. The Veterans’ Nurse Loan Repayment Program is designed to attract nurses to the state’s VA hospitals, which consistently need an influx of qualified nursing staff.

Illinois Nursing Careers

Areas of Illinois run the gamut from Chicago to Champaign, and nursing salaries vary all across the state. An RN working as a staff nurse for a hospital in Chicago will earn a median annual income of $69,740, well above the national average. Salaries in this area have an overall range of $57,000-$83,000, making it a pretty attractive area for new graduates. An RN working as a staff nurse in Rock Island will earn a median annual income of $62,378, representing an overall range of $51,000-$74,359. All figures are from the BLS.

The Department’s Center for Rural Health offers several scholarship programs for nursing students attending accredited nursing programs in Illinois.  The Nursing Education Scholarship Program is a multi-year renewable grant for nursing students pursuing nursing certificates or degrees at the undergraduate or graduate levels. Applications are due annually by the end of May.  Award amounts vary but include tuition and fee assistance for nursing courses only as well as a living stipend. The Allied Health Care Professional Scholarship Program offers renewable $7,500 scholarships for students studying to become nurse practitioners. The deadline for applications is the end of June annually. Both programs require a commitment from applicants to work in underserved areas in Illinois upon graduation.  For additional information on these scholarships, write the Department, Center for Rural Health, 535 West Jefferson Street, Springfield, IL 62761, or call (217) 782-1624.

Educational Institute Nursing Scholarships
When accepted to a particular school, your first stop should be the school’s financial aid office.  You will need to complete financial aid forms to be eligible for need-based nursing scholarships and grants.  The office representative can provide applications and guidelines for all scholarships and grants for which you meet eligibility requirements.  You can also inquire about nursing scholarships and grants within the nursing department.  They will have a list of available resources for students.  Following is an example of institutional-based nursing scholarships and grants.

Loyola University Chicago
The Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing offers nearly 30 scholarships for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Award amounts vary, with several scholarships being renewable. Each scholarship has specific eligibility and application requirements. Students can learn more about eligibility and application requirements of nursing scholarships available through the School contact them directly at (773)508-3249.  Additional information is also available through the Office of Financial Assistance.

Employer-Sponsored Nursing Scholarships
Local employers are typically overlooked as a resource for nursing scholarships and grants. There are two ways to qualify for these opportunities.  If you are currently employed, ask your employer if they offer nursing scholarships and grants.  Your company’s human resources department will also have information. If you are a recent high school graduate still residing with your parents, their employer may sponsor nursing scholarships and grants for employees and their children.  Health care employers in the community may offer scholarships and grants to nursing students with the stipulation they complete a term of employment upon graduation.  The following are examples of employer-sponsored scholarships.

The Clara Abbott Foundation
Nursing students with parents who work at Abbott Laboratories are eligible for scholarships from the Foundation.  Applicants must be under the age of 30 at the time of application.  Only full-time students with documented financial needs are eligible for financial assistance. Aileen S. Andrew Foundation

Scholarships are available for the children of Andrew Corporation employees. Award amounts vary beginning at $2,500.  Undergraduate nursing students must submit applications by the end of March annually to be considered for fall scholarships. Letters of recommendation and academic scores are determining factors.  For application forms and guidelines, write the Foundation at 10701 Winterset Drive, Orland Park, IL 60467 or by calling (708) 349-4445.

Robert N. Brewer Family Foundation
