Florida Nursing Schools

With almost 100 different nursing schools in Florida that offer Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in nursing, you should be able to find either a campus location in Florida or an online college that has the nursing program you are looking for. There are numerous options to enter into the nursing field, or for current nurses to get an RN-BSN degree or an Advanced Practice Nursing Degree at Florida institutions.

Table of Contents

Florida offers prospective nursing students a variety of educational and work experiences to choose from. The state boasts several dozen accredited nursing schools, as well as other nursing programs that help keep things like waiting lists to a minimum. Experts project that there will be a shortage of around 800,000 nurses by the year 2020, so many states have made it a priority to enroll and graduate as many nurses as they can.

When it comes to working as a Florida nurse, Florida’s urban areas, like Miami and Tampa, have several large hospitals that employ several thousand nurses. Florida also has more rural areas with smaller hospitals that still need good nursing staff, as well as private doctors’ offices, fertility clinics, mental health facilities, and other medical care centers scattered throughout the state.

Financial Aid for Florida Nursing Students

In an effort to attract as many new students as possible to its nursing programs, Florida schools and medical centers offer some financial aid and other monetary incentives for students. This has the effect of helping nursing students cover their tuition costs, while allowing Florida to draw freshly graduated nurses to its many understaffed medical centers.

Salaries for Florida Nurses

Florida hosts a broad variety of social, economic, and geographic areas. Nurses can find themselves earning a pretty penny (plus a sign-on bonus) at a large hospital somewhere like Tampa, or they can find themselves working for a small, underserved facility in part of the Everglades. As a result, nursing salaries vary. An RN in Tampa earns a median annual salary of $61,721, while one in Gainesvile earns $59,092, and one in Fort Lauderdale earns $63,890. Overall, salaries cover a range that extends from the low $50,000s, all the way to the high $70,000s. All figures are from the BLS.

Florida Board of Nursing

Florida’s Board of Nursing is a wealth of information on all things nursing in Florida. Both graduated, licensed nurses and nursing students can benefit from relying on the Board of Nursing for information on things from licensing and examinations, educational requirements, the scope of nursing practice in Florida, Florida health laws, industry news, and more. The Board of Nursing can be reached at 4052 Bald Cypress Way, BIN C02, Tallahassee, FL, 32399-3252 or on their website.
