Connecticut isn’t a large state, but it has a lot to offer nursing students. This area boasts eighteen accredited nursing schools, easy access to Boston by train or drive, and fast access to New York by ferry.

It also has a wide range of medical facilities of its own that cater to a variety of clients, from hospitals, to private practices, to specialist’s offices like fertility clinics. Though Connecticut is fairly populated, their number of excellent nursing schools means that students are somewhat less likely to end up waitlisted than they are in other areas of New England.

Degree Programs and Licenses for Connecticut Nursing Students

Connecticut’s schools offer several different nursing programs. There are diploma programs, and nursing degrees available from an associates to a masters. Though Connecticut is home to a good number of nursing schools with a good range of degree programs, it is not a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact.

This means that travel nurses should contact the CT Board of Examiners for Nursing for licensing information, and Connecticut nurses seeking to work outside of Connecticut should contact the Board of Nursing for the state in which they will be practicing.

Career Options for Connecticut Nurses

Connecticut has a lot of areas with a high demand for nurses. Not all of these areas will offer the same incentives when it comes to things like salary, sign-on bonuses, or benefits. On the whole, Connecticut nurses earn more than the national average. A Bridgeport RN will earn a median salary of about $74,000, a Stamford RN will earn just over $75,000, and a Danbury RN will earn about $73,000. This is the median income and reflects an actual salary range of between $60,000 to $89,000. Different things will influence how much a nurse earns, including geographical area, competition for nursing jobs in that area, and whether he or she works in a hospital, private clinic, or other health care facility. All figures are from the BLS.

The Connecticut Nursing Association also works to help students struggling to pay for school, by offering some very helpful nursing scholarships to students in difficult situations.

Connecticut Board of Nursing

Connecticut’s Board of Nursing handles everything to do with licensing, examinations, schools of study for registered and licensed nurses, and general Connecticut-specific nursing regulations. It is an adjunct to Connecticut’s Department of Health and can be reached through their website, or at Dept. of Public Health, 410 Capitol Avenue, MS# 13PHO, P.O. Box 340308, Hartford, CT 06134-0328 or on their website.

Hartford Foundation for Public Giving
The Foundation offers the Hartford Foundation College Scholarship to students graduating from a high school in the Greater Hartford area. Students accepted to a four-year nursing program are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  Awards are $3,000 per year and can be renewed three times for a total of $12,000 for tuition, room and board, books, and fees.  For additional information, you can contact the Foundation at 10 Columbus Blvd., 8th Floor, Hartford, CT 06106 or by calling (860) 548-1888.

Educational Institute Nursing Scholarships
You should see if your nursing school offers scholarships. Several Connecticut colleges have nursing scholarships for their nursing students.  To find out if your school offers nursing scholarships you can visit your school’s financial aid office.  They should have a listing of all available scholarships.  However, you should also talk to a representative in the nursing department to make sure the list is complete.  Following is an example of institutional-based nursing scholarships and grants.

University of Connecticut
Students enrolled in the University of Connecticut’s School of Nursing are eligible for a variety of nursing scholarships and grants.  Each nursing student is considered for all grants and scholarships when initially applying to the University.  Nursing students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) to be considered for scholarships and grants.  If you are a current student, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid Services for current financial assistance programs.

Employer-Sponsored Nursing Scholarships
Many students overlook company-sponsored nursing scholarships.  These are offered to employees and children of employees.  To find out if your employer offers nursing scholarships, ask your boss or the Human Resources Department.  High school students should check their parent’s employers for possible scholarships.  If you or family members are an employee at several companies in Connecticut, you may be eligible for nursing school tuition assistance.    The Carle C. Conway Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and The Barden Foundation, Inc. provide employee-related scholarships for nursing programs.

Carle C. Conway Scholarship Foundation, Inc.
The Foundation awards scholarships to employees and their children at companies that succeeded the former Continental Can, Inc.  The maximum scholarship award amount for nursing students is $10,000.  Applications are available by writing the Foundation at 95 Alexandra Drive, Stamford, CT 06903.  Completed applications should be submitted to the Foundation at P.O. Box 6731, Princeton, NJ 08541.

The Barden Foundation, Inc.
The Barden Corp. provides scholarships to employees’ children through the Foundation.  Awards range between $500 and $1,500.  Nursing students who meet eligibility requirements can apply for these scholarships.  Applications are due by the end of March annually and should be mailed to 34 Hawley Road Ext., Danbury, CT 06811.  For additional information, you can call the Foundation at (203) 792-9369.

Community-Based Nursing Scholarships
Many Connecticut communities offer nursing scholarships to residents.  You can find these scholarships by contacting your community foundation.  These foundations typically serve a county or multi-county area.  Local civic organizations and government agencies may offer or have information about nursing scholarships and grants for your community.  The Eugene Atwood Fund and the American Savings Foundation are examples of community-based scholarship funders.

Eugene Atwood Fund
If you are a resident of New London County in Connecticut and are attending a qualified undergraduate nursing program, you may be eligible for a nursing scholarship from the Fund.  Applications must include a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA), current transcripts and GPA, and letters of recommendation.  For an application form and guidelines, write the Fund at 68 Federal Street, New London, CT 06320 or call them at (860) 443-4357.  Completed applications should be mailed to P.O. Box 270, New London, CT 06320.

American Savings Foundation
The Foundation serves sixty-four towns in Connecticut.  If you are a resident of one of the towns and an undergraduate nursing student, you may be eligible for a nursing scholarship ranging between $500 and $4,000.  The application must be submitted online.  For additional information, you can contact the Foundation at 185 Main Street, New Britain, CT  06051 or by calling them at (860) 827-2556.
