California Nursing Schools

California is a huge state with a lot of nursing schools, but it’s still feeling the effects of the worldwide nursing shortage just as much as everywhere else. Fortunately, California has been in a position to help curtail some of the problems that have arisen due to the state’s shortage of qualified nursing staff, by boosting the number of approved nursing education programs, and instituting more measures that help make nursing education more affordable for prospective students.

Just like most other states, California has a mix of very urban and very rural areas. Large populous cities like Los Angeles have several large hospitals with top-ranked trauma centers, and these tend to scoop up the bulk of new nursing graduates. This means that there are plenty of smaller hospitals and private practices left needing good nurses, so newly licensed nursing graduates can just about take their pick when it comes to choosing their working environment.

California Nursing Degree Funding

California has a long list of nursing schools and programs, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need to work to lure new students to their nursing programs. One of the best ways to do this is with scholarships, financial aid, and other monetary schemes that help make school more affordable, like the following:

  • Loan forgiveness programs offered by the Health Professions Education Foundation
  • Loan forgiveness programs offered by the State Nursing Assumption Program of Loans for Education for Nursing Faculty, and Nurses in State Facilities
  • Scholarships from individual colleges
  • Tuition reimbursement programs offered by employers and recruiters

Career and Salary Information for California Nurses

Many areas of California have a pretty high cost of living, and salaries reflect that. Other areas are considerably lower, which creates considerable variation in nursing salaries across the state. For example, a staff RN in Los Angeles can expect to draw a median annual salary of $72,172. The same position in Riverside pays about $69,674. The good news for nurses is that just about every area of California pays quite a bit more than the national average for nursing salaries. All figures are from the BLS.

California Board of Nursing

California’s Board of Registered Nursing covers every aspect of nursing in the north and south California. RNs, LPNs, CNAs, ACRNs, nursing students, and other people involved in the nursing industry rely on it for information on examinations and licensing procedures, renewals, financial aid schemes and other tuition help, regulations, and more. The California Board of Registered Nursing can be reached at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N-217, Sacramento, CA, 95834-1924 or on their website.
