Alabama Nursing Schools

Alabama has a wealth of nursing programs for nurses of every type, from diploma programs to post-graduate programs. There are twenty-three separate practical nurse programs and forty registered nurse programs. Since Alabama is a pretty big state with a number of large hospitals as well as underserved rural medical centers, this probably shouldn’t be too surprising.

The world is facing a crisis when it comes to a shortage of nurses, and Alabama is no exception. Fortunately, the state has taken steps to ensure that it is able to enroll, educate, graduate, and license as many new nurses as possible. Many of Alabama’s nursing education programs have excellent pass rates on the NCLEX-PN exam (as much as 100% for many of them), which just goes to show the quality of nursing schools in Alabama.

Table of Contents

Career Opportunities for Alabama Nurses

Cities like Mobile have large hospitals with level 1 trauma centers, which employ plenty of nurses, but there are still loads of other career opportunities for RNs and LPNs that don’t necessarily want to go work in a large hospital. These include Smaller, community hospitals, Private practices, Mental health facilities, Nursing homes, and Hospice care companies. Alabama covers a broad range of economic and social areas, from affluent cities to poorer rural spots, so there is just as much variety in the type of work environments it offers.

Career & Salary Information for Alabama Nurses

Like nurses in many states, Alabama nurses can experience some variation in salary depending on where they choose to work. An RN in Tuscaloosa can expect to earn a median annual salary of $58,960. An RN in Birmingham can anticipate bringing in around $61,000. In Dothan, an RN will earn around $57,000. These are just examples of the median salaries in a range that spans all the way from the mid-$40,000s to the low $70,000s. All figures are from the BLS.

Alabama Board of Nursing

Alabama is unique in that it doesn’t participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so travel nurses will want to contact the Alabama Board of Nursing for information on working within Alabama. Other RNs, LPNs, and nursing students will want to contact the Board for information on licensing and examinations, changes to state nursing regulations, educational requirements, approved nursing programs, industry news, and more. The Alabama Board of Nursing can be reached at 770 Washington Ave., RSA Plaza, Ste. 250, Montgomery, AL, 36130-3900 or their website.

Alabama Nursing Scholarships and Grants

Residents interested in a nursing career have a plethora of Alabama nursing scholarships and grants available to help pay for their education.  Scholarships and grants are critical to nursing education which can be costly.

The following nursing scholarships and grants are for Alabama residents just beginning their nursing education as well as nursing students enrolled in Alabama colleges and universities pursuing undergraduate and post-graduate nursing degrees.

Alabama Student Assistance Program
If you are an undergraduate nursing student who is a resident of Alabama and attends one of the 80 participating Alabama schools or colleges, you may qualify for this grant.  This grant is based 100% on financial needs.  Awards range up to $2,500 for each year you attend college, and you can reapply annually.   To determine your eligibility, simply visit your school’s financial aid office and ask if they participate in the program.  If they do, complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA).

Alabama Student Grant Program
Concerned you may not qualify for a need-based grant?  This program provides merit-based grants to undergraduate nursing students at eligible independent liberal arts and faith-based colleges.  Grant awards vary but will not exceed $1,200 in any academic year.  Eligible schools with nursing programs are Birmingham-Southern College, Judson College, Oakwood College, Samford University, Spring Hill College, Stillman College, University of Mobile, and South University – Montgomery Campus.  Obtain current applications at your school’s financial aid office.  All requirements, including upcoming deadlines, are listed on the form.

Andalusia Health Services, Inc. Scholarship Program
Scholarships through this program are awarded to nursing students who are residents of Covington County, Alabama, and plan to pursue nursing careers in Covington County upon graduation.  Average nursing scholarship amounts range between $1,200 and $2,500 per semester depending upon the field of study.  Students planning to become nurse practitioners are eligible for the $2,500 scholarships.  Nursing students pursuing degrees to be registered, licensed practical, LBW RN mobility nurses or lab technicians are eligible for $1,200 per semester. All applicants must prove enrollment in an eligible field of study. Applications are accepted throughout the year but must be submitted by March to be considered for the following fall.  In addition to academic ability, the scholarship committee considers the character and leadership of candidates as well as the health care needs of the county when awarding scholarships.  For an application, submit a request to Scholarship Selection Committee, Andalusia Health Services, Inc., P.O. Box 56, Andalusia, Alabama 36420, or call (334) 222-3138.

Baptist Health Care Foundation
One of the best resources for Alabama nursing scholarships and grants is the Baptist Health Care Foundation.  Scholarships are generally grouped in two categories: (1) employee and employee family scholarships, and (2) general Alabama resident scholarships.

The Foundation offers approximately 10 scholarships and accepts applications during the first quarter of each year. Scholarship applicants need only submit one application – the scholarship committee considers applicants for every scholarship for which eligibility criteria are met.  This does not mean applicants will necessarily receive multiple scholarships.

To be eligible, you must either be accepted to or enrolled in college to be eligible for Foundation nursing scholarships. Most scholarships require at least one completed semester in a nursing program.  One scholarship is specifically for nursing students completing graduate programs. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of application.  Residency requirements vary from the city of Montgomery to statewide. Depending on the scholarship, the award may be contingent upon you working at Baptist Health Care upon graduation.

Award amounts range from $500 to two semesters of tuition, depending on the scholarship.  For current applications and deadlines contact the Foundation directly at (334) 273-4567.  Illegible and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.  Mail applications to P.O. Box 241647, Montgomery, AL 36124 or hand deliver to the Foundation at DeBoer Bldg., Number 34G, 301 Brown Springs Rd., Montgomery, AL 36117.

East Alabama Medical Center Foundation
Nursing scholarships are by nomination only.  You must be a nursing student from east Alabama and your school must nominate you for a scholarship.  Average nursing scholarship awards are $500.  For nomination forms and instructions, write a letter of inquiry and mail it to the Foundation at 2000 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL 36801-5452.

Internal Medicine Associates Scholarship Fund
Graduating high school seniors in Alabama who has been accepted into a nursing program are eligible for this scholarship. Scholarship applications and supporting documentation must be submitted to the Fund by the end of March. For application and submission requirements, write a letter of inquiry to the Scholarship Fund Chairman at 121 N. 20th Street, Opelika, AL, 36801-5449.

Two-Year College Academic Scholarship Program
Planning to begin your nursing education at a two-year college?  This scholarship program might be for you.  It is a 100% academic merit-based program.  Nursing students accepted to public two-year colleges in Alabama who have an excellent academic record are eligible for this scholarship. Contact your college’s financial aid office for current applications.

Educational Institute Nursing Scholarships
Nursing students accepted to or attending accredited nursing programs at schools in Alabama should visit the school’s financial aid office.  Ask specifically for nursing scholarships.  Each scholarship will detail eligibility requirements, deadlines, and award amounts.  The school’s nursing department staff may be able to provide additional information and guidance related to the scholarship application process.  Following is an example of institutional-based nursing scholarships and grants.

University of Alabama
With nearly 60 scholarships available, the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama has tuition assistance opportunities for nursing students at all levels.  Whether an incoming freshman or pursuing a post-graduate degree, nursing students are offered assistance from the school’s $5.2 million endowments.   Upwards of $500,000 are awarded in nursing scholarships each year.  To learn more about eligibility and application requirements related to these nursing scholarships and other tuition assistance available through the school, contact them directly at (205)934-5428.

Employer-Sponsored Nursing Scholarships
If you or your family members are employees at several major companies in Alabama, you may be eligible for nursing school tuition assistance.  In addition to the Baptist Health Care Foundation described above, employee-related scholarships are available through the Alabama Power Foundation, Inc.

Alabama Power Foundation, Inc.
Eligible recipients are dependent children of full-time Alabama Power employees who have worked for the company for at least one year.  Recipients must be enrolled in a four-year college or university.  Scholarships in the amount of $1,250 can be used to cover nursing school tuition, fees, books, or supplies.  Awards are based on need and can be renewed twice.  Contact the Foundation for application forms and guidelines.  Completed applications must be submitted by the end of February to ALPR Scholarship Program, c/o Scholarship Program Administrators, Inc., P.O. Box 23737, Nashville, TN 37202-3737.

Community-Based Nursing Scholarships
Communities throughout Alabama offer scholarships and grants to nursing students who are community residents.  Residency eligibility may be as limiting as graduating from a specific high school to living in a particular city.  To learn about community-based nursing scholarships, contact your high school guidance office and your city mayor’s office.  If there is a community foundation that serves your city, contact them for current scholarships as well.  The E. L. Gibson Foundation is an example of a foundation that offers community-based nursing scholarships.

E. L. Gibson Foundation
If you are a resident of Coffee County, AL, or bordering counties and pursuing a nursing education, you are eligible for nursing scholarships.  There are no deadlines for submitting applications. Nursing scholarship awards range from $500 to $1,000. To request information about their current nursing scholarships, send a letter of inquiry to the Foundation at 482 Oxford Way, Pelham, AL 35124-2862.

Alabama nursing scholarships and grants provide tuition and book assistance to students enrolled in approved Alabama colleges and universities.
