Alcorn State University is a land-grant institution that was founded in 1871. The university is based in Claiborne County and is located near Lorman. Alcorn State University has campuses in Vicksburg and Natchez. Just over 3,000 students are enrolled in Alcorn State University’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Alcorn State University has a nursing masters degree program with a Family Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Educator focus. The Family Nurse Practitioner program is 43 credits and the Nurse Educator program is 37 credits. Students can also enroll in a Geriatric or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner nursing degree program through the Mississippi Education Consortium for Specialized Advanced Practice Nursing (MECSAPN). The core courses for the MECSAPN nursing masters degree programs are taken at Alcorn State University.
For full admission, applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or above in their undergraduate coursework. Applicants to the nursing masters degree program with an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 or above in nursing masters degree courses may be offered conditional admission. Scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), which should include analytical writing are also required. Two letters of recommendation and at least one year of experience as a clinical nurse are required.

Delta State University was established in 1924. Delta State University, also known as DSU, is one of Mississippi’s eight public universities. More than 4,000 students from over 20 countries are enrolled at Delta State University. The university was originally founded as a teacher’s college.
The Master of Science in Nursing degree program is available in Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentrations. The Master of Science in nursing program concentrations range from 42 to 47 credits.
The nursing masters degree program accepts students with a bachelors degree in nursing or a related healthcare area. Scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required for admission consideration. A combined verbal and quantitative score of 800 or above and a writing score of 3.5 or above is required on the GRE. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or above in the undergraduate program.
A prerequisite course in statistics is required for all nursing masters degree tracks. For the Nurse Administrator and Nurse Educator tracks, a pathophysiology course is also required. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. Two years of experience as an RN is required for nurses applying to the RN to MSN program. Applicants to the Nurse Practitioner track should have at least two years as an RN with patient contact.

The Mississippi University for Women is also known as MUW or the “W.” The university was established in 1884. Originally, the Mississippi University for Women was a women’s college, but the university is now coeducational.
The Mississippi University for Women has offered masters in nursing programs since 1974. Currently three specialization options are offered in the RN to MSN program all leading to a Master of Science degree in nursing:

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
The nursing masters degree programs can be completed in 12 months and require completion of 39 credits. Up to six credits can be transferred into the MSN program. MSN classes meet Mondays and occasional Tuesdays.
A BSN earned with a 3.0 or above GPA is the primary entrance requirement for the masters in nursing program. All MSN applicants should have at least two years of nursing experience. Statistics and Advanced Pathophysiology are prerequisite courses for the nursing masters degree program. A combined score of 800 or above and a writing score of 3.0 or above are required on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Three letters of recommendation, with at least one from a nursing professor are required for admission consideration in addition to an interview with nursing admission staff.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is also known as UMMC. The university serves over 2,500 students and is Mississippi’s only university health science center. The University of Mississippi Medical Centers offers degree programs in nursing, dentistry and medicine among other healthcare fields. Though the University of Mississippi Medical Center opened in 1950, the institution can trace its roots to a medical school founded in 1903 in the city of Oxford, Mississippi.
In addition to a traditional nursing masters degree program, the University of Mississippi Medical Center also has several early entry programs, including an RN to MSN program for first year ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) students enrolled at select Mississippi Community Colleges. This program allows nurses to apply to the MSN program in their first year of study. Nurses can also apply to the RN to MSN program after completing their ADN and earn an MSN in a seven or nine semester program. Tracks in the nursing masters degree program include:

The Nurse Educator and Nursing and Health Care Administrator tracks are offered primarily online. Applicants to the MSN program should have a BSN earned with a 3.0 or above GPA. BSN students in the last semester of their program may apply to the MSN program.

The University of Southern Mississippi is more commonly known to some as Southern Miss. The university was established in 1910 and has the Southern Miss Gulf Coast campus in addition to the main campus in Hattiesburg.
The College of Nursing at the University of Mississippi has three departments, The Department of Collaborative Nursing Care, The Department of Advanced Practice and The Department of Systems Leadership and Health Outcomes. The Master of Science in Nursing program is offered in the Department of Advanced Practice and offers the following specializations:

With the exception of the Nurse Executive MSN program which has classes online and weekends, all nursing masters degree programs are offered online. Students can complete the RN to MSN program in 15 months to 2 years depending on their program of study.
Students interested in the masters in nursing program, must apply to both the MSN program and the graduate school of nursing. A bachelors degree in nursing from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or National League for Nursing accredited program is required for admission. Three recommendation letters and a statistics prerequisite course are also required. All applicants should submit scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

William Carey University is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist tradition of the Christian faith. The university has campuses in Hattiesburg and Biloxi in Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana. William Carey University can trace its roots to 1906 as Mississippi Women’s College.
The Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing offers a nursing masters degree program with a Nurse Educator specialization. The RN to MSN program prepares nurses to take the Nurse Educator certification exam. Students can apply for fall admission to the MSN program at the Hattiesburg Campus or spring admission at the Tradition campus. The master in nursing program is designed to be highly flexible and accommodate nurses that wish to enroll in the program full or part time. Students have up to six years to complete the requirements for the MSN degree.
Nurses seeking admission to the Master of Science in nursing program should have a bachelors degree in nursing from an accredited program and a valid nursing license without restrictions. Applicants should have a 2.5 or above GPA in the last 30 credits of their undergraduate program or a 3.0 overall GPA. Two letters of reference, a resume and transcripts must be submitted along with the application. Students are permitted to earn two grades below a “B” in their undergraduate coursework prior to the MSN program.
