Mid-America Technology Center Nursing Program Review

Mid-America Technology Center (MATC) was established in 1968 and began classes in 1971. The center is based in Wayne, Oklahoma. Over 1,000 students are enrolled in programs at Mid-America Technology Center. The center offers over 20 programs in business, technology and nursing among other areas of study. The Mid-America Technology Center is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement and the Oklahoma Board of Career and Technology Education (OBCTE).

Nursing Programs

The Practical Nursing program at Mid-America Technology Center is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.  The Pre-nursing program is accredited by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

Practical Nurse Program (for Licensed Practical Nurses-LPNs)

The Practical Nurse program at Mid-America Technology Center prepares students for an entry level nursing career by providing supervised clinical experiences and simulations in nursing in addition to coursework. Admission requirements to the Practical Nurse program include taking and earning a satisfactory score on the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Four references, transcripts from previous education, a personal statement and employment record are also required as part of the admissions process. Admission to the Practical Nurse program is selective and competitive. Students in the local area are given admission priority. The Practical Nurse Program can be completed in 11 months and requires 1,463 hours of study. Upon completion of the Practical Nurse program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).


The pre-nursing program prepares students for further nursing study in the practical nursing program. Students interested in the program should contact the admission counselor, as the program is a compilation of health science courses. Throughout the course of the program, students will complete courses in medical terminology, phlebotomy, and the first two courses of the Practical Nurse program. Students will complete the requirements for the long -term care aide and home health aide as part of the program. Upon completing the pre-nursing program, students are prepared to earn advanced standing in the Practical Nurse program or pursue other healthcare career opportunities as an aide or technician. Students have the option of earning academic college credit for some coursework in the Pre-nursing program.

Leadership Mid-America (LMA) Program

The Leadership Mid-America program is an interdisciplinary program designed to develop and prepare leaders ready to serve their local communities in the South Central Oklahoma area. The LMA program at Mid-America Technology Center is open to professionals 25 years or older in all areas of practice including nursing. Those who demonstrate an interest in developing their community for the better and ideas for leadership are ideal applicants. Admission criteria include selecting applicants from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to ensure diversity in the course. Students in the LMA program are prepared for leadership opportunities through eight sessions and learning about community agencies and resources.
