Students with a masters degree in a field other than nursing may be considered for the DNP program. Students must be licensed in the location in which they will complete their clinical practice requirements.

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences was established in 1972. The university serves nurses enrolled in the military or public health sector. Students seeking to apply to the program may be required to gain approval from their appropriate sector. The Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences was established in 1993. The GSN at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program. The DNP is a degree for nurses who deliver and manage healthcare in an advanced practice role. Both a post-masters DNP and post-bachelors DNP are offered. Prerequisite courses in biochemistry and statistics are required for the DNP program.

The PhD in Nursing emphasizes nursing research. Admission requirements to the PhD in Nursing program include an MSN (Masters of Science in Nursing) completed with a 3.0 or higher GPA. The University of Maryland offers both a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Philosophy qualification.

A Dual DNP/MBA (Masters of Business Administration), BSN to DNP (Bachelors of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice) and traditional Post-Masters DNP are the three entry options available for the BSN to DNP program. Admission requirements to the DNP program include a minimum 3.0 GPA in an MSN program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Applicants must also submit proof of their clinical practice hours and a valid Maryland RN license.

As with the DNP, the PhD in Nursing offers a Post-BSN, Post-MSN and PhD/MBA program. Admission requirements for the Post-Masters PhD in Nursing include a minimum 3.0 GPA, active nursing license and exam scores for the GRE. To apply to the BSN-PhD program, applicants must be enrolled in the masters program at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON).

Applicants who do not meet the 3.0 GPA requirement may still be considered for admission to a doctoral program.
