LPN Programs in Virginia
There’s a countrywide shortage of qualified nursing staff, and Virginia is no different. In fact, there’s predicted to be an increase in the demand of Licensed Practical Nurses of around 17% between now and 2016.
Getting into the industry is relatively straightforward, but there are a few critical factors you need to bear in mind.
Choosing the Right LPN Course in Virginia
Finding the right Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) course in Virginia is the first step in getting into the industry. There are several factors to consider.
First, you will need to determine whether you plan to study full time or part time. Full time courses take about a year to complete, but part time studies can be considerably longer. Then there’s the choice between certificate and associate degree programs, and whether you want to attend a university or a community college.
Whichever option you choose, make sure that it’s approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing, because like a GED or high school diploma and a clear criminal record, that is a prerequisite for registration later on.
Curriculum for LPN Studies in Virginia
The curriculum for state approved LPN courses in Virginia is much like most other states. You will study everything from diet and nutrition to patient care and procedures, anatomy, physiology and reporting procedures, and a whole lot more.
The idea is that once you complete your LPN training, you will be ready to accept any licensed practical nursing position in Virginia, and be able to work adequately under the supervision of an RN or doctor. The job requires a high level of attention to detail, technical knowledge and emotional and physical strength, and LPN courses are designed to make sure you have them when you start work.
Registering As An LPN in Virginia
After you’ve completed a Virginia state approved LPN course, you still need to pass the NCLEX-PN exam. The exam tests both practical and theoretical knowledge and skill, and it’s only after you’ve passed it that you can apply for registration on the Virginia Board of Nursing list of LPNs, and start working in the state.
What You Can Earn As An LPN in Virginia
The last thing you may be wondering about becoming an LPN in Virginia is how much you will earn. The average salary for LPN’s in the state at the moment is a little over $38,000, although that can vary quite a bit, depending on location and experience.
