Jefferson State Community College Nursing Program Review

Known as one of Alabama’s top two year colleges, Jefferson State Community College (JSCC) has provided education and job preparation for the Birmingham area for more than 45 years. Jefferson State, also commonly referred to as “Jeff State”, was founded in 1965 and offers university transfer programs, 20 career programs, and multiple certificate programs.

A number of convenient locations provide the convenience for a busy style of living. With online instruction, locations include the Shelby-Hoover Campus in Shelby County, the Jefferson Campus, the St. Clair-Pell City Center and the Chilton-Clanton Center. Programs are offered anytime and over the internet online. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to grant associate degrees.

Pre Nursing Advising

Pre Nursing Advising offers advising sessions that will answer any and all questions. The pre nursing student will meet faculty, advisors, and current nursing students that can help with applying and to help you increase chances of being accepted. They can also give you facts about the whole process of the course.  The student will learn about all programs including full time, part time, night and weekend. This is partnership with St. Vincent’s and will start in the fall. For all students pursuing a degree in nursing, this meeting is a requirement. 

Jefferson State Community College Nursing Program Review

Jefferson State Community College offers students looking to achieve a degree or certificate in nursing three different curriculum choices. If the student already has their license as a Practical Nurse (LPN), the college offers a Career Mobility Program – LPN to ADN. For those wanting to go straight to the top of the two year college nursing opportunities, the college offers the traditional RN Associate Degree. The college also offers a Part-Time Associate Degree Nursing Program.  Programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission in Atlanta Georgia as well as being approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

ADN Registered Nurse – Night and Weekend Tract/St. Vincent Partnership

This program offers the courses of a traditional ADN degree in a night and weekend form for working, non-traditional students who want to obtain the necessary education to start their career in nursing. The program is a mix of on-line classes and in class education. It is offered as a partnership with St. Vincent’s Hospital. Students should begin taking the classes required for admission to the nursing program before applying. These classes are required in order to complete the ADN Program as well.

LPN to RN Career Mobility Program

This program offered at Jefferson State Community College requires that the student complete a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program in one of the Alabama Community College System institutions within two years of applying for this program. Those who have completed the program outside of this timeframe must complete the Nursing Career Mobility Assessment. In this program, students will learn and show expertise in the operations of professional nursing as well as attend clinical experiences. Applicants for this program must hold a current and valid Alabama Practical Nursing License. Applicants for this program also must provide proof of at least 500 hours of working experience as an LPN within the 12 months of applying. Upon completion of this program, graduates will hold an Associate Degree in Nursing and will be qualified to apply to sit for the national licensure examination.

Standard Associate Degree Nurse Program – RN

This standard program allows for students with no prior nursing experience or training to begin their journey to becoming a prominent member of this professional community. With the mixture of general instruction courses as well as nursing specific courses allow the student to achieve this degree in five semesters. This degree will allow the individual to go into the work force knowing the fundamentals of the nursing profession and detailed training in how to care for individuals in different life stages as well as from different cultures. After completing the program the graduate will be eligible to apply to write the national licensure examination.

LPN – Gainful Employment Disclosure

The on-time completion rate is 92.9 percent for this program. It takes three semesters to complete, although remedial and pre-requisite courses will extend program completion. The job placement rate is 85.7 percent for this program and is calculated by the number of graduates place in the field by the number of graduates.
