Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review
Online Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
The RN to BSN degree option allows nurses to complete their bachelor’s degree coursework while continuing employment as an RN. Examples of increased opportunities and roles available to RNs with a bachelor’s degree include consulting and research roles, specialist roles, education and administrative management.
Course Description
The course assists nurses in understanding local, national and global policy as it relates to health promotion and disease prevention from the individual to population level. Nurses in the online bachelor’s degree program learn to think critically, conceptually, and practically, using mathematical analysis and the scientific method. A bachelor’s degree in nursing provides access to entry level administrative opportunities in the nursing field. Students are also required to take one unit of personal development education (managing career, personal finances, etc).
Duration and Cost
The bachelor’s degree requires 3 to 3 ½ years to complete and according to the universities website, tuition fees range from $49,680 to $57,600 as of December 2012 (see the university site for current costs and tuition fees). Please note that the program length pertains to graduating in normal time.
Online Master’s Degree in Nursing
Master’s students choose from two specializations in Nursing Education or Nursing Management. A difference between the bachelor’s and master’s nursing degree is that the master’s degree lays the groundwork for students to accelerate into advanced leadership roles, sometimes without having to earn experience, as leadership is a core part of the master’s course.
Course Description
The Nursing Educator concentration offers courses in teaching and learning strategies, technology and principles of nursing education, nurse educator roles, curriculum development and evaluation and culminates in a clinical practicum and a scholarly research project. Students in the Nursing Management concentration will complete courses in nursing manager and leadership roles, health care information management and health policy and management. The Nursing Management specialization also culminates in a practicum and scholarly research paper.
Duration and Cost
The master’s degree can be completed in as little as 1 year and tuition is approximately $22,500 as of December 2012 (please visit the university website for current tuition costs). This one year completion time pertains to graduating in normal time.
