Nursing Program

A highly popular option, the Nursing Program at GJCTC provides students with the foundation for a career in the fast-paced field of nursing. This program enables graduates to succeed on the state licensing exams that will qualify them for immediate employment.

Practical Nursing Program

Licensed Practical Nurses are in high demand in the medical field, offering crucial treatment and care to patients coping with basic medical issues. Utilizing a range of clinical and interpersonal skills LPNs perform such tasks as taking vital signs, evaluating patient condition, aiding in the development and implementation of treatment plans and providing nurturing life care to patients in a variety of settings.

How Long Will it Take?

The earning of a Practical Nursing Diploma through Greater Johnstown Area Career and Technology Center can be achieved through full-time or part-time study. Part of GJCTCs “Career in a Year” department, the full-time program is offered five days a week for one calendar year and receives a new class in September of every year. The part-time program is offered in the evenings and weekends for two calendar years and receives a new class in September of every other year. Over 1,600 hours are comprised both of theoretical and clinical instruction developed around nursing and general education courses.

Course of Study

The Nursing Program is structured into levels of progressive difficulty that allow students to develop their knowledge and skill-sets through conceptual groupings and course advancement. Students enrolled in the full-time program progress through three levels of 16 weeks each, while part-time students will also work through three levels but of 32 weeks each. Courses are instructed through classroom lectures and associated clinical experiences offered in a variety of area medical and treatment settings.

Areas of Training

Though subject to change due to the constant modifications of the nursing field, the Nursing Program provides instruction in several general areas. These areas allow for a broad understanding of the responsibilities and tasks of a Practical Nurse both for the purpose of preparing strong members of the workforce but also to offer a basis for furthered education should the student wish to pursue undergraduate or graduate degrees for advanced career opportunities in the future. Graduation from the Practical Nursing Program at Greater Johnstown offers students the chance to seek gainful employment in a wide array of environments including hospitals, medical offices, private employment and long-term care facilities.
