Franklin County Career and Technology Center Nursing Program Review
The Franklin County Career and Technology Center (FCCTC) provides career-building educational training for over 1,000 high school and adult students in the Franklin County area in Pennsylvania. Since 1967, four years after the original idea for a school of this type came to mind, FCCTC has offered numerous programs to offer students options for immediate employment or as a bridge into furthered education.
Nursing Program
Because of their crucial role in the healthcare system, nurses are currently in higher demand than ever before. This does not mean, however, that the standards to which these caregivers are held has lessened. In fact, the nursing field is constantly intensifying, necessitating the development of highly skilled and passionate individuals to fill the responsibilities. The Nursing Program through FCCTC prepares students to sit for state licensing exams that will qualify them to seek entry level positions in a variety of medical settings.
Licensed Practical Nurse Program
Licensed Practical Nurses provide basic bedside care to patients experiencing common medical complaints. These nurses perform such tasks as evaluation and analysis of the patient, executing simple procedures and providing continued maintenance and life care for long term patients. LPNs are always needed and account for a large portion of the nursing community. Through this program students will gain all of the necessary knowledge to approach employment confidently and succeed in their roles.
How Long Will it Take?
The LPN Program through the Franklin County Career and Technology Center take one calendar year. It is comprised of three progressively more difficult levels of instruction featuring general education and nursing instruction. Students are expected to attend classroom lectures or clinical experiences five days a week to fulfill the full-time course of study. Classes begin in either February or August depending on the start date of the particular student. Completion of the program will represent over 1,600 hours of learning.
Course of Study
The LPN Program through FCCTC is divided into three levels of general education and nursing courses. These levels increase in complexity as the student progresses through them, becoming more difficult both in theory and clinical exercises. These clinical experiences are offered in various medical settings, changing each level.
Level I covers 16 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered at a local nursing home and rehabilitation center, and hospital. Level II covers 22 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered at a hospital, a health center and a treatment center. The final, most intensive, level is 8 weeks, with clinical experiences being offered in rehabilitation and nursing homes. Level III completes the program of study with a course regarding Leadership that prepares the students for true-life professional experiences.
Admission Process
Admission into the LPN Program is dependent on students submitting proper documentation of various requirements including graduation from, or satisfactory completion of, an approved high school or equivalent program. Applicants must also prove stable physical health, current immunizations and a clean drug screen. An aptitude exam must also be passed along with FBI and Child Abuse Clearance. Prior to beginning classes the student must have CPR certification. Once all necessary documentation has been gathered the completed application package will be presented to an Admissions committee. If accepted, the student will receive notification by mail.
Successful completion of this program ensures students can enter the competitive workforce with confidence. After licensing exams have been passed, graduates will be qualified to gain employment at hospitals, medical practices, private employment or other facilities.
