Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review

Online degree programs at Duquesne University utilize the popular Blackboard online learning system for course delivery.  Though delivered online, class sizes are still small, with an average of 10-20 students per class.

Online Master’s Degree in Nursing

The online masters degree in nursing offers the following three specializations:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Forensic Nursing
  • Nursing Education

The online masters degree programs incorporate the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Synergy Model, which trains nurses to successfully guide families through the healthcare system.  Core courses for the three programs include Methods of Nursing Research, Bioethical Decision-Making in Nursing and Healthcare, and Population-Based Health Promotion.

Duration and Cost

Course tuition is $1,034 per credit.  Program length ranges from 38-47 credits.

Online Doctoral Degrees in Nursing

Duquesne University offers two online doctoral level programs, a PhD in nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice qualification. With a focus on academic research, the PhD program has been in operation since 1997, and stakes the claim of the first fully online nursing PhD program in the country.  Major areas of research focus for the program include vulnerable populations, cultural competence, forensics, social justice and health promotion.

While the PhD prepares nurses for a role as an academic, the Doctor of Nursing program is for nurses who desire to remain in practice and improve health care programs on many levels including health care policy, organizational effectiveness, and patient care services.

Duration and Cost

Course tuition is $1,034 per credit.  The PhD program requires 58 credits and the DNP program requires 33 credits.  The PhD program will generally require 4 years of study, while the DNP program 2 years.

Online Certificates in Nursing

Certificate programs at Duquesne University allow nurses the opportunity to develop area-specific skills that may not have been available in their degree programs. Nurses can choose from four specializations for the Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing:

Course tuition is $1,034 per credit hour. The certificate programs range from 23 to 44 credits.
