In Washington, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) can also sometimes be  known as Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC). Whatever you call it though, there’s a big demand for trained and certified nurses aides in Washington and elsewhere.

Training is relatively quick, salaries are relatively high, and by following a few simple guidelines, you can start a career as a certified nurses aide in Washington within just a few months.

State Approval for CNA Training Programs in Washington

Like other states in the US, the State of Washington requires anyone who would like to become a CNA to complete a state approved training class. In Washington, the body tasked with approving training programs is the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services.

You should note that not all training programs for nurses aides in Washington are approved, and if you choose one that is not, you may not be eligible for certification.

Where to Find State Approved CNA Training In Washington

Approved nursing assistant programs in Washington are run by nursing homes, colleges, vocational schools, high schools and hospitals. There are also a number of state approved private CNA training schools in the state. As long as you choose one of the approved training programs, it doesn’t matter where in Washington you train, or at which training facility, so choose whichever is most convenient for you.

The CNA Training Program Syllabus in Washington

The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services sets the minimum CNA training syllabus for approved training facilities, and while some offer additional training, all accredited programs must at least cover the course set out by the state.

The syllabus for CNA trainees in Washington is much like that of other states – there is practical and theoretical training, clinical training is supervised by a nurse, and the course covers everything from basic nursing to communications skills and more. One notable addition to the training program is that the state requires that 7 of the 35 classroom hours required must focus on AIDS awareness and training, and 40 of the 50 prescribed clinical training hours must happen in a real clinical setting.

The upside to the rigorous syllabus set by the state is that once you have completed your training, you will be able to work in any nursing home, hospital or medical facility with ease.

CNA Certification in Washington

Before you can call yourself a CNA in Washington, and accept a job as a nurses aide, you first need to pass the OBRA exam. This is a competency test that tests your practical and theoretical knowledge, and once you have passed it, you are eligible for registration on the nurses board, as a qualified certified nurses aide.

Prospects and Earnings for Certified Nursing Assistants in Washington

A CNA in Washington currently earns an annual average salary of around $26,000. Jobs are plentiful too, and the demand for certified nurses aides is expected to increase around 22% between now and 2016. So if you’ve been looking for a quick and easy way to get into healthcare, this may just be the route to take.

It’s also worth noting that many Certified Nurse Assistants later go on to train as Registered Nurses (RN), or in hospital administration, so this is a good stepping stone to bigger things.
