It’s quick and easy to get started in a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Tennessee and elsewhere, but there are a few things you will need to know before you get started.

State Approved CNA Training Programs in Tennessee

The first step in becoming a CNA in Tennessee, like most other states, is to undergo a certified nurses aide training program. In Tennessee, you need to make sure that the program you choose is approved by the State of Tennessee Department of Health. If it’s not, you may not be eligible to take the exam required for certification, or to register on the state directory.

The CNA Training Program in Tennessee

The CNA training program in Tennessee is based on 25 core competency skills, and state approved programs are no shorter than 75 hours. Of those hours, training will be divided into hands on clinical training, class room studies and lab training. A further 16 of those hours must cover state mandated patient rights, emergency procedures and other critical skills.

Training programs may be longer than the state approved course, but they cannot be shorter. Once you have completed a state approved CNA training program, you should also be able to cope with any certified nurses aide position in any state or private healthcare facility in the state.

Reimbursement for CNA Training in Tennessee

According to federal law, any state funded training facility for CNA’s in Tennessee has to offer new certified nurses aides who train and qualify, and are then employed as CNA’s reimbursement for all or some of the cost of their studies and certification. Make sure you ask about the reimbursement program, so that if you are eligible, you can apply.

CNA Certification in Tennessee

After you have completed a state approved certified nurses aide training program in Tennessee, the next step is to pass the competency exam administered by Diversified Technologies LLP in the state. The competency exam will test your knowledge of no less than 5 (random) skills of the 25 critical skills you have trained in. Once you’ve passed the exam, you will be legally allowed to use the title CNA, and to accept certified nurses aide positions in the state.

Average Tennessee CNA Salary and Career Prospects

With an 18% growth expected in the demand for Certified NurseAssistants in Tennessee, which is higher than the national average expected between now and 2016, there’s no shortage of jobs available for newly trained certified nurses aides.
