Like many other states, Colorado is experiencing a boom in the demand for Certified Nursing Assistants, also known as Certified Nursing Aides. If you’re considering CNA programs in Colorado, and a career as a nurses aide, then there are a few things you should know before you make any decisions.

How Do You Qualify As a Nurses Aide In Colorado?

In order to become a nurses aide (nurses assistant) in Colorado, you need to have completed a Colorado Board of Nursing approved CNA training program.

These programs are run by private training academies, community colleges, nursing schools and homes, and even a few high schools. There are also agencies that offer free training, in return for a contract to work at a reduced rate or as a volunteer for a predetermined time after you qualify.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training is not the final step though. Once you’ve completed the training course itself (which lasts several weeks, and covers the state approved syllabus) you will still need to take and pass the Colorado CNA exam, which is offered by Pearson VUE. This is required, before you can accept a job as a CNA anywhere in the state.

Can You Train As a Nurses Aid in Colorado?

Anyone can train as a CNA in Colorado, and there is no requirement that you have a GED or high school diploma. There are also training programs that will accept trainees who are not yet 18 years old. However, statistically speaking, your chances of finding employment (and your potential earning power) is higher if you are 18 years or older, and have a high school diploma.

Certified Nursing Assistants who trained outside of Colorado are also eligible to work in the state, so long as they pass the Colorado CNA exam.

Are Certified Nursing Assistants In Demand In Colorado?

As with many other states in the US, there is a very definite growth in the demand for trained, Certified Nurses Assistants in Colorado. In fact, the CDLE (Colorado Department of Labor and Employment) estimates that there will be a 29% growth in demand for Certified Nurse Assistants through 2016, so this is a good profession to consider training in.

You are very likely to be able to find a job at a nursing home, hospital, clinic or hospice quite quickly after you qualify, and it’s a good way to springboard into the nursing field.

What Does a CNA Earn in Colorado?

As with most states, your earnings as a CNA in Colorado will vary from area to area, and from institution to institution. Your experience and skill will also play a role in what you can command in terms of salary. The average salary for a CNA in Colorado, however, is approximately $26,000 per annum, although newly qualified candidates are likely to earn less than that.
