CNA Programs In Alaska

If you’re looking for CNA programs in Alaska, then you’re making a good career choice. An increase in the number of assisted living facilities in the state, combined with an aging population, means that it’s now quicker (and easier) to find a job once you’re a qualified Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)  than ever. Let’s take a look at how you go from thinking about it to working in the field though.

CNA Training In Alaska

In order to become a CNA or nurse’s aide in Alaska, you will need to undergo a state-approved training program. The courses are run by state training bodies, colleges, and hospitals, so you have plenty of options when it comes to where to study.

Wherever you do choose to study though, you will be required to complete the same course content. That content consists of 140 hours of study, 60 of which are classroom-based, and the remainder of which will be practical, clinical training.

What Does the Alaskan CNA Training Program Cover?

The course content of the Alaskan CNA training program is comprehensive, and ranges from basic nursing skills, like taking blood pressure correctly, to caring for patients with degenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s. Once completed, trainees will be able to competently assist an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or RN (Registered Nurse), administer care to patients, be able to monitor a patient’s condition, and perform many other practical and administrative functions. Being a Certified Nursing Assistant is a hands-on job, and this course prepares you for that.

Do You Qualify to Train As a CNA?

In Alaska, there’s no hard and fast rule about who can study to be a CNA. Some training facilities will let you do your training while you are still in high school, while others will require that you are 18 years old, and/or have a high school diploma before you start.

It’s therefore a good idea to ask several different training facilities what their admission requirements for their CNA programs are, and to make sure at the same time that they are state accredited.

How Do You Become a Registered CNA in Alaska?

To become a registered CNA in Alaska (a requirement if you plan to work in the state) you will need to pass the nurse’s aide competency exam, which is run by the state, and which you can take through Pearson VUE. Once you’ve passed that, you will be included on the Alaska Nurse’s Aid Registry, and that allows you to work as a CNA anywhere in Alaska.

What Does an Alaskan CNA Earn?

As we’ve already mentioned, there’s a growing demand for qualified, registered Certified Nursing Assistants in Alaska, and thanks to that demand, salaries in the state are particularly high. The average salary for a CNA in Alaska is around $31,000, which is well above the national average. This career option also has an over 35% growth rate, so there are likely to be plenty of positions to choose from.

So whether you plan to work as a CNA permanently, or are looking for a career that you can use as a stepping stone, or to pay the bills while you train to become an RN, this is a particularly good choice in Alaska.
