It’s no surprise Florida is in the top 5 (4th) for number of registered nurses employed, with 162,530 RN’s employed in the state, according to the BLS. With a growing elderly population, Florida provides many opportunities for growth as a registered nurse. Plan on continuing your education even beyond earning an ADN degree or obtaining your RN license. This will make you competitive in the industry, as Florida is expected to continue to add RN jobs in the future.
ADN programs in Florida are typically two years in length, and offered by both community, career, and junior colleges.
Be sure that the school you are considering is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. While participating in an Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, the student will take coursework that includes courses in biology, chemistry, microbiology, pathology, psychology and sociology, communication course work and courses in nursing, including the theory and practice of nursing. In addition, the student will participate in clinical practice, either at a hospital or nursing home, supervised by a registered nurse. There also will be limited opportunities in certain Florida ADN programs to observe activities in community health agencies. Upon completion of your ADN program, you will be expected, as nursing candidates in most states are, to pass the national licensing exam for registered nurses, the NCLEX-RN administered by Pearson Vue.
What Kind of a Position Can I Hold in Florida with an ADN Degree/Registered Nurse License?
Your ADN degree, coupled with your RN license, will prepare you to provide direct care to patients in both acute and long-term settings in Florida. As a registered nurse, you are part of a team of health care workers whose focus is on the patient. In Florida, as in most states, the Registered Nurse (RN) holds a particularly important position with regard to the patient; a patient is much more likely to remember the nurse that took care of them for hours on end over the doctor who may have stopped to visit once or twice.

What Type of Hours Does an ADN RN in Florida Work?
A dedicated nurse in Florida can find him- or herself working all kinds of hours. There are Florida nurses who work shift work at hospitals, which includes work on nights and weekends, while there are other Florida nurses who work in local doctor’s clinics whose schedule may be more of an 8-5 type schedule. A nurse’s salary typically increases where work on nights and weekends is required.
