Accelerated BSN Programs in Massachusetts

There are quite a few accelerated BSN degree programs located in Massachusetts. Many of the nursing schools offer campus-based learning, but there are multiple online programs accepting Massachusetts residents as well. Curry College is a public institution located in Milton, Massachusetts, 7 miles from downtown Boston, with a second campus in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1879 by Anna Baright as the School of Elocution with Alexander Graham Bell named the school’s first chancellor. In 1943 the school’s name was changed to Curry College after Anna Baright’s husband, Samuel Silas Curry.

Today, Curry College offers certificates, undergraduate degrees and graduate degree programs in 20 academic areas. The proximity of the School of Nursing to Boston allows students access to clinical opportunities in some of the nation’s best hospitals and health care facilities. The School of Nursing offers the traditional BSN program as well as the Accelerated BSN program at the Milton campus. This second degree accelerated BSN program allows students to earn a BSN degree after 16 months of full-time classroom and clinical work. To qualify for this BSN second degree program, the student must have already earned a bachelors degree in a field other than nursing and must have completed the 6 prerequisite classes with a grade of “B-” or better in each. The prerequisite courses include: Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Microbiology, Chemistry, Statistics, and Human Growth and Development. The application deadline is in April for January entry.

The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science is a private institution located in the Longwood Medical section of Boston, Massachusetts, with campuses in Worcester, Massachusetts and Manchester, New Hampshire. It was founded by several Boston pharmacists in1823 as the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. It is the oldest college in Boston and the oldest school of pharmacy in the United States. Today, the school has expanded beyond pharmacy education to offer over 30 different certificate and degree programs in several different health care fields. The School of Nursing offers the Postbaccalaureate BSN program that allows students to achieve the BSN degree after 16 months of full-time, year-round study. This program is offered only on the Manchester and Worcester campuses. The schedule includes 15-week fall semesters, 15-week spring semesters, and 12-week summer sessions ending in May of the third year. To qualify for this 2nd degree BSN program, the student must have already earned a bachelor degree in a field other than nursing. In addition, within 10 years of matriculation, the student must have completed the 7 prerequisite classes with a grade of “C” or better in each. The applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The MGH Institute of Health Professions is a private institution that is part of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and closely affiliated with Harvard Medical School. It was founded in 1873 as Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing and granted diplomas in nursing. In 1977 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts gave the school approval to grant degrees and in 1980 the school was renamed the MGH Institute of Health Professions. MGH Institute is now organized into 3 schools: the School of Nursing, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Center for Interprofessional Studies and Innovations. The School of Nursing offers the Accelerated BSN program that allows students to earn a BSN degree after 14 months of full-time classroom and clinical work. To qualify for this top ABSN (Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program, the student must have already earned a bachelors degree in a field other than nursing, and within 10 years of matriculation must have completed the 6 prerequisite classes with a grade of “C” or better in each. Northeastern University is a private university located on a 73-acre campus in the Fenway section of Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men and classes were held at the Huntington YMCA. By 1935 day classes were added and the curriculum was expanded, leading the school to change its name to Northeastern University. The College of Nursing was opened in 1964, and is now a school that is part of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. The School of Nursing offers 4 options for earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, including the Direct Entry Nursing option that allows students to earn a BSN degree after 16 months of full-time classroom and clinical work. Regis College is a private, Catholic college located on a 132-acre campus in Weston, Massachusetts, 12 miles from downtown Boston. It was founded in1927 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, and was named after Reverend Mother Mary Regis Casserly, the founder for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Originally a college for women, Regis College became coeducational in 2007. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a public college located in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College to provide agricultural, military and mechanical training. Over the next few decades the school expanded its curriculum to include liberal arts, and in 1931 its name was changed to Massachusetts State College. In 1947 Massachusetts State College became the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. It is the second largest campus in the University of Massachusetts system. UMass Boston was established in 1964 by the Massachusetts legislature. Today UMass Boston offers over 115 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 8 colleges and schools. It also offers a distance learning program as well as a corporate education program.
