Abington Memorial Hospital Nursing Program Review

Based in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) offers the unique opportunity to complete nursing education in a hospital setting through the Dixon School of Nursing (AMH Dixon SON). The hospital has nursing accrediting from the National League for Nursing in addition to other specialized accreditation for various healthcare programs. Over 200 students are enrolled in the school of nursing which was founded in 1914.

Nursing Programs

 The Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing strives to prepare caring and well-rounded individuals for service in the nursing practice. Simulation technology, a small student to faculty ratio and a diverse student body with a range of backgrounds and experiences all make the Dixon School of Nursing at Abington Memorial Hospital an ideal place to pursue nursing education.  All faculty members at the Dixon School of Nursing hold at least a master’s level qualification. The Abington Memorial Hospital Dixon School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

Abington Memorial Hospital Undergraduate Nursing Programs

RN (Registered Nurse) Diploma

The RN program at Abington Memorial Hospital is a 3 year program leading to a diploma in nursing. Students in the nursing program complete one year of nursing coursework at an accredited college or university followed by an additional two years of coursework specifically related to nursing education. The RN program can be completed in two years. Students take prerequisites at other higher education institutions and transfer in coursework. Pre-requisite courses on a part-time schedule and courses at the Dixon School of Nursing began after prerequisites are complete. Admission to the nursing program is granted once each year. Upon completion of the nursing program, students receive a diploma in nursing and are eligible to enter BSN programs. Nursing graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, National Council for Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Students enrolled in the nursing diploma program at Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing may also enroll in the A.S (Associate of Science) in Allied Health/Sciences from Manor College in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania to receive an AS along with the nursing diploma from the Dixon School of nursing.


Prerequisite courses to the nursing program include classes in psychology, biology, and English. Admission requirements to the nursing diploma program include completion of the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and completion of at least 3 liberal arts and two lab-based science courses with a minimum grade of “C.” Students accepted to Abington Memorial Hospital from high school must complete course prerequisites at a college or university before being beginning the nursing program at Abington Memorial Hospital.

Day Option

The Day Program Option takes place each August through May. The Day Program consists of 3, 11-week terms and can be completed in two years. Courses are held Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 4:30.

Evening/Weekend Option

The Evening/Weekend Option takes place each September through August. Each year in the Evening/Weekend program consists of 3, 15-week terms. The Evening/Weekend program can be completed in 2 years. Courses are held from 5 to 10 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
