Utica College

Central New York based Utica College was founded in 1946.  Though a comprehensive university, Utica College offers many benefits of a small college including personalized attention.  With just under 4,000 students enrolled in their undergraduate and graduate programs, students are able to develop strong faculty relationships.

Students can choose from 37 and 21 undergraduate and graduate degree programs respectively in various fields including business administration, criminal justice, cyber security, and economic crime management.

Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review

The 100% online RN to BSN Nursing program at Utica College explores Nursing Management, Clinical Pharmacology, Community Health Nursing and Health Assessment.  Programs are carefully designed to include personal and professional development.  Utica College does not currently offer graduate level nursing programs, but an online master’s program in Health Care Administration is offered.

Online Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

The online Bachelors degree in Nursing program at Utica College is the same program as the campus based program, and is geared towards working nurses.  Though students do not participate in a clinical during their education, program faculty are recognized for their clinical expertise in particular.

Course Description

Courses in the program are delivered using WebCT, and students can expect to dedicate 12-15 hours per week to online coursework. Students will purchase required course books through the Utica College online bookstore.

Courses in the program include:

  • Human Genetics-Social, medical and moral issues in the research of human genetics
  • Cultures, Health and Healing-Examines effects of culture on health
  • Professional Ethics-Ethical dilemmas encountered in the profession
  • Clinical Research-Quantitative and qualitative methods in clinical research
  • Basic Statistics-Statistics for non-math majors

Career Options

According to Utica College’s sources the US Department of Labor has named nursing the top growing profession of 2012. Career options for nurses pursuing bachelor’s degrees include acute care, advanced practice psychiatric, critical care, and clinical specialist nurses.  Some nurses can also consider becoming instructors at the bachelor’s degree level though experience is often required to supplement.

Duration and Cost

The program can be completed in about 3 years, dependent upon the number of credits transferred in.  Program tuition is $350 per credit hour.  One-hundred twenty (120) credits total are required towards the degree and 34-55 core credits, though students with an associate’s degree are exempt from this core requirement.

Faculty

The faculty that teach the campus-based Bachelors Degree in Nursing program at Utica College also teach the online program.  Faculty will also assist with job placement.

Things to consider:

  • Certain courses are not offered online.
  • Clinical experience is not a part of the program.
  • Students must be registered nurses with an associate’s degree to participate in the BSN program.

Accreditation

Utica College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education.  The online RN-BSN degree program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the New York State Education Department.
