University of North Carolina


As one of the most well-known and renowned public universities, the University of North Carolina offers academic programs second to none.  It is the only university to have awarded degrees in the 18th century.  Beginning with one student in 1789, the university now offers 77 bachelors, 109 masters, 66 doctoral and 6 professional degrees in business, dentistry, education, law, medicine, nursing, public health and social work.

The school is also known for its athletic program, and top-notch educational resources.

Online Nursing and Health Care Degrees Review

Nursing programs at the University of North Carolina have pioneered nursing education through being the first in the state to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree and to offer a PhD in nursing.  Its nursing programs are currently ranked fourth in the nation by US News and World Report.  The School of Nursing currently does not offer any fully-online programs, as the RN to BSN has been suspended.  However, several courses offer online components.

Online Master’s Degree in Nursing

The RN to MSN course offers bridge courses that are completely online, and the traditional Master’s of Science in Nursing programs offers a hybrid format in which students take both online and in-person courses.  Specialization options for the master’s degree include:

  • Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (including Adult Oncology option)
  • Health Care Systems
    – Administration
    – Clinical Nurse Leader & CNL/Educator
    – Education, Informatics
    – Outcome Management
  • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner/Primary Care
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Duration and Cost

Tuition for the program ranges from $19,800 to $22,800 for the complete program.  The program is approximately 2 years in length.

Online Certificates in Nursing

The online Occupational Health Nurse Certificate is to increase the knowledge and skill of registered nurses working in occupational healthcare settings.  Courses include Occupational Safety and Ergonomics, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, and Principles of Epidemiology.

Duration and Cost

The program requires 11 credits and can be completed in approximately 1 year.  Tuition is $473 to $1,205 per credit for residents and non-residents respectively.

Online Courses in Nursing

The University of North Carolina has several distance learning options for nurses who may not need a degree program, but rather a theory course. The NURS R: Medical-Surgical Nursing Review for Registered Nurses is available as a theory only or theory and clinical component course.

Duration and Cost

The course requires 140 contact hours to earn the certification, and tuition is $520 plus an additional $250 fee for the clinical component.
