University of Nevada Las Vegas: RN to MSN Program Review

The University of Nevada Las Vegas is part of the public University of Nevada system. An additional campus is located in Reno. The university is less than two miles from the Las Vegas Strip. The university was founded in 1957.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas offers two tracks in the MSN program, Family Nurse Practitioner and Nursing Education. Admission requirements to the RN to BSN program including a Bachelor of Science in nursing from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Students should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their last two years of nursing coursework.

Prerequisite courses include statistics, research and physical assessment at the undergraduate level. Two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a valid RN license are also necessary for admission to the MSN program. It is recommended that students have their most recent year of career experience in an area related to their nursing masters study.

The Master in Nursing program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas is offered online, though students may attend an on-campus orientation when the course commences. In addition some MSN courses may require campus attendance for one to three days.

University of Nevada Reno: RN to MSN Program Review

The University of Nevada Reno is the primary campus in the University of Nevada system. The other campus is based in Las Vegas. Founded in 1874, the University of Nevada Reno was originally located in Elko, Nevada.

The university offers two masters programs, a dual masters program in Public Health and nursing as well as a traditional Master of Science in Nursing program. The traditional Master of Science in Nursing program offers three specializations, Clinical Nurse Leader, Nurse Educator and Family Nurse Practitioner. The MSN is designed to prepare nurses for a career in leadership roles or to pursue doctoral level studies. Upon completing the program, nurses are able to take a certification exam in their area of specialization. Prerequisites for admission to the nursing program include a graduate course in statistics, BSN from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program earned with a 3.0 or higher GPA and a current nursing license in Nevada, as the MSN is a campus-based course.

Nursing students in the RN to MSN program at the University of Nevada Reno are able to take the certification exam in their respective area upon completion of their program. Students in the dual MSN/MPH program select either a Social and Behavioral Health or Epidemiology focus for their program.

National University is a non-profit university based in San Diego, California. The university has campuses throughout the United States. National University was founded in 1971. In addition to the California and Nevada campuses, National University also offers educational programs in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Virginia. The university offers both online and campus-based courses.

National University offers a Master of Science in Nursing in addition to a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia program. The Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program accredits the Nurse Anesthesia master’s program. The RN to MSN program is designed to maintain the standards set out by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Admission requirements for the Master of Science in Nursing program include graduation from a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program accredited by CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Prior to entering the nursing masters program, students should have completed courses in statistics, research and community health nursing. Applicants to the Nurse Anesthesia masters program should have at least one year of experience in a critical care environment.

In addition to common specializations such as Nursing Informatics and Nursing Administration, National University also offers courses in Forensic Nursing.
