Ashland University

The nursing traditional Bachelor of Science in nursing at Ashland University is one of the 3 pre-licensure undergraduate nursing tracks. This college recently acquired Medcentral College of nursing and hence boasts two legacies in nurse training. It is open for high school applicants or transfers students who have completed a limited number of prerequisites courses. All students must complete the required lower division courses prior to applying for the professional phase of the nursing program. 

Upon admission to the major, students take at least 63 nursing major courses so as to become eligible to apply for the NLEX-registered nurse licensure exam.  Since the fall of 2012, all students enrolled in Ashland University for the traditional BSN are guaranteed to finish their degree in 4 years if they follow the stipulated outline.

Bowling Green State University

Through a unique partnership with University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University offers a pre-licensure nursing degree program. In this over 30-year old successful partnership, students start their liberal arts foundation and prerequisites nursing courses at BGSU for the first two years. Upon completion of the preparatory courses, students can then make the second application to the college of nursing at University of Toledo.  Applications for the nursing major are received thrice annually for fall, summer and spring semesters but admission is very competitive.  All nursing and clinical courses are taught at the University of Toledo in the junior and senior years. Students may choose to live at BGSU student housing and commute to Toledo or rent apartments near Toledo. Upon completion of the degree program, students become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam for initial licensure and also receive a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree from Bowling Green State University.

Capital University

As a private university, Capital University offers the advantage of small sized classrooms in the traditional undergraduate nursing program.  The nursing program at Capital is unique in that students do not need a supplementary application for the nursing major as seen in other program. Students are admitted in the major as freshman students. With this arrangement in place, students take the basic university courses in the freshman year and start the foundational nursing courses as early as sophomore year. There is also a mandatory hospital attachment program in the summer of the sophomore year which ensures students have more clinical contact prior to graduation. In junior and senior years, students are exclusively committed to nursing and clinical courses. First, it is one of the few programs in the US that admits students directly without the need of a supplementary application.  The advantage of this feature is that students are immersed into practical and clinical experience as early as the first year. The CWRU BSN track also allows students to specialize in preoperative nursing as a mandatory requirement of the curriculum. This track is well divided into three components: general education/liberal arts courses, prerequisites nursing support courses and nursing major courses.  The nursing program has high focus on community –based nursing but also allows students to choose their own area of interest during the final semester through a capstone project. However, successful admission to the college does not mean guaranteed admission to the nursing program and a supplementary application is needed. The college accepts traditional students who start as freshmen, change of major students and non-licensed transfer students. All applicants eyeing the clinical nursing BSN program must have completed at least 28 semester credits and earned a minimum GPA of 2.75. Due to the large pool of applicants, the priority for admission is given to traditional students of College of Mount St Joseph who have reached the given criteria while transfer students take any remaining chances.

Defiance College offers a unique NLNAC accredited Bachelor of Science in nursing program in partnership with Northwest State Community College. The BSN is a 1+2+1 program that allows students to experience the learning environments of two distinct colleges but with a similar degree objective. First, students must apply for admission at Defiance College where they take the first year of general education and liberal art courses. An NSCC application must also be completed simultaneously in order to qualify for a transfer. Upon successful completion of this year, and gaining eligibility to transfer, they can apply to NSCC for the next 2 years.

Students must also take a course in nurse assisting and become Certified Nurses Assistants as a prerequisite for admission to NSCC. The 2 years at NSCC are meant to prepare the students in an associate of science in nursing scope whereby upon completion, students become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam and become registered nurses. The exam is designed to be taken in the summer after the third year and students must pass besides being in good academic standing to be eligible to go back to Defiance College to take the final year of the 1+2+1 leading to the Bachelor of Science in nursing degree.

At Franciscan University, the undergraduate nursing program is offered under a passionately Christian community and takes a holistic and spiritual approach to training. It is a 4-year Bachelor of nursing track that accepts freshman students in the general university admissions to take nursing pre-nursing courses. Freshmen taking prerequisite courses must maintain a Quality Point Average of 2.5 to be eligible to apply in writing for the next level of professional nursing. Applications for the major are done in the spring semester of the sophomore year. It should however be noted that completing the prerequisites courses successfully does not guarantee a seat in the nursing program. Instead a competitive admission process is used.

The program which just received its initial CCNE accreditation in 2010 has grown rapidly to an attractive program in Hiram and Ohio at large. This private and small college offers the track as a 4-year traditional day nursing program. However, students may choose to take the Biomedical Humanities Minor which may slightly extend the period of study. Outside the classroom, Hiram nursing students can participate in study abroad opportunities in South Africa, Dominican Republic, Zambia among others. The university also has an active Student Nurses Organization and a Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.

The baccalaureate nursing program at Kent state University is open for freshman, transfer and KSU change of major students. It starts with a core pre-nursing set of prerequisite courses which students must take before being formally admitted to the nursing sequence of courses. Students must have completed the required pre-nursing courses with a minimum GPA of 2.75 to be considered for the next phase of nursing admission. KSU admits a new class of nursing major students twice annually for fall and spring semesters. Students applying for admission in the fall semester can complete their program at Kent main campus, Trumbull, Geauga, Stark and Salem while those seeking spring admission can only take the program at Kent main campus.

Outside the mainstream nursing curriculum, students can apply for the various international programs in Africa, Haiti, Northern Ireland and Thailand. Academically talented students can join the Delta XI chapter of Sigma Theta Tau while all nursing students are eligible to become members of the university’s Students Nurse’s Association.

Lourdes University offers a 4-year pre-licensure program to traditional freshman and transfer students from other colleges. The university has a special affiliation with University of Findlay to allow pre-nursing students complete a BSN at Lourdes University. The program is a 125-credit track of 62 credits in the liberal arts and general education segment and 63 in the nursing major courses. Applications to the major are accepted twice annually for fall and summer semesters. Traditional Lourdes students and transfer students interested in the major must have completed the outlined pre-nursing courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. However, admission to the major is considered on a competitive basis. Preference in admission is given to students who have done volunteer work in the past. Upon admission to the major, students can become member of Sigma Theta Tau of the Students Nurse Association.

This 4-year undergraduate track is open for both traditional freshman students and transfer students from other colleges seeking initial licensure as registered nurses. Applying to the major, upon completing a pre-nursing curriculum can be done twice annually for fall and spring start dates. Exceptionally performing student nurses at Malone can seek to expand and nurture their scholarly ambitions by joining the Pi Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society. Induction to the honor society requires being in the top 35% of their class and having a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The BSN pre-licensure track at Mercy College is meant to prepare students who function as nurse generalists in health facilities.  The college offers nurse training that is strongly grounded in the catholic traditions and practices. Eligible applicants for the nursing program must have completed at least 12 college credits at any accredited college or university. Admission to the nursing program is competitive and students are ranked on a cumulative Grade point system. Generally, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 to be eligible for admission. However, students who have completed prerequisite courses at Mercy are given preference during admission. The college has only one annual admission cycle early in the year.

Miami University-Hamilton

Miami University offers a 4-year Bachelor of Science in nursing degree program at Hamilton Campus. The pre-nursing program is open to high graduates with an ACT score of 23 and a high school GPA of 3.0. However, it is important to note that admission for the pre-nursing program is separate from admission from the nursing major track. Only students that complete the pre-nursing phase satisfactory are allowed to apply for the major.  During the first year of the pre-nursing phase, students can complete the general education courses at either Hamilton regional campus or at the main campus in Oxford.  Students who attain a GPA of 2.5 or higher in this phase become eligible to apply for the competitive and selective admission process at Hamilton regional campus.  Nursing courses start as early as the sophomore year upon acceptance as a major. The university has only one admission cycle per year for the generic BSN.

The Middletown regional campus of Miami University offers a generic 4-year bachelor of nursing degree. The Program is a total replica of the Hamilton regional campus. Students interested in this program must be high school graduates with a minimum ACT score of 23 and a HS GPA of 3.0. There are two options of starting as a freshman at MU-Middletown. Students can choose to start their pre-nursing program Middletown or at Oxford main Campus. However, upon completion of the first year with a GPA of 2.5 or better, students can complete a separate application at the Middletown for the nursing major. It is important to note that there is only one application cycle annually for the major even at the Hamilton Campus.  In the sophomore year, students are involved in clinical classes one a day per week which increases to two days per week in the junior and senior years. Outside the generic nursing curriculum, Miami University has an active Omicron Chi chapter of Sigma Theta which is designed for students with high scholarly ambitions.

It is a 4-year track that accepts both new freshman students and transfer student with general education credits from other colleges. High school applicants seeking admission as freshman must have an average ACT score of 20 or higher and high school GPA of 3.0. Freshmen embark on the first year to complete general education courses in preparation for nursing courses that start at sophomore level. On the other hand, transfer students with a minimum college GPA of 2.8 may apply for admission to the sophomore level of the nursing track. Their admission is based on space availability. It is possible to complete the program at either the main campus in Columbus or at Fairfield Medical Center campus of MCCN based in Lancaster Ohio.

Unlike other universities, Muskingum limits the number of students who take this phase of the bachelor of nursing with regard to the availability of core classes. During the first 2 years at Notre Dame, students take nursing support, general education and liberal arts courses. Separate applications must be completed for admission in the nursing major portion of the program. Eligibility for admission in the first phase is contingent with meeting the ACT or SAT score requirement of  23 or 1070 respectively and high school GPA of 3.3 or GED. Other factors determining admission may include honors awards, personal statements and personal interests among other measures of proficiency. Generally, students in the freshman and sophomores years take pre-nursing and liberal arts foundation courses in preparation for the clinical and professional nursing courses. In the near future, ONU honor society for Nursing is projected to become part of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing. This will allow exceptionally performing student nurses become members to enjoy the vast scholarship and scholarly growth of this international honor society.

Ohio State University offers an entry-level baccalaureate degree in nursing that prepares students for the NCLEX-RN exams. Prior to starting on the nursing major, students must have been fully admitted to OSU and completed a pre-nursing prerequisite courses phase designed for the first year level.  Students who complete the pre-nursing phase successfully may then apply for the nursing clinical courses designed to take the next 3 academic years. Admission to the nursing major only happens once annually for the autumn semester and students with a GPA of 3.2 or better are considered for the competitive admission process. In total, students joining OHS for the bachelor of nursing are expected to complete the 121-credit curriculum in four years if the correct sequence of courses if followed. However, it is possible to complete the program on a part time basis which may lengthen the period of study.

The undergraduate nursing program at Otterbein University is structured to take one year of prerequisite courses and 3 years of nursing and clinical coursework. Students wishing to start as freshmen are enrolled as pre-nursing majors to complete the first year of general education and support courses. This can be completed during the day but some courses have options of evening classes. Towards the end of spring of the freshman year, students in the pre-nursing phases are reviewed for admission in the nursing major phase. The basic requirement for admission is a minimum GPA of 3.0 on pre-nursing courses taken. Transfer students are also admitted at this level using the same admission criteria as Otterbein traditional students. The university has a new group of students joining the nursing major once annually in fall semester. The undergraduate bachelor of nursing program at the University of Toledo is offered through a nursing consortium with Bowling Green State University.  Through the consortium plan, high school graduates are admitted to take general education courses at either Bowling Green SU or University of Toledo main campus. Upon completion of this preparatory phase, students may then apply for the nursing major that is usually offered at Toledo’s Health Science Campus.  At the sophomore level, transfer students college credits may apply for admission evaluation for the major. By the end of the program which takes about 4 years, students become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become registered nurses. However, priority admission to the major is guaranteed to students that are beneficiaries of the Army ROTC scholarship. Students applying to start as freshmen may either be granted Direct Admission to the nursing major or enter the track as pre-nursing majors. Direct admit students do not need a second application for the nursing major while those admitted as pre-nursing majors will have to apply during the spring of first year for consideration in the major. First year admits require a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and ACT/SAT score of 24 or 1090 respectively.  Pre-nursing, transfers and change of major students all require a GPA of 2.5 or higher when applying for the major.  It is important to note the application dates since applying for direct admission and for the major after pre-nursing phase occurs at different periods.  Both options of entering the program are highly competitive and only a few students are selected from the large pool of applicants. The BSN at Cincinnati has many attractive features including a co-op program with UC Health University Hospital. It is also fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Alternatively, transfer students seeking admission at the point of starting nursing courses must have earned an average GPA of 2.5 or higher on all college courses taken. However, students are subject to competitive admission as meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Walsh university generic nursing program is one of three tracks in the university leading to the Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN).  Unlike the other two options, the 4-year traditional option is designed for students seeking initial licensure and who do not have a prior degree.  Admission to the nursing program; which embraces Judeo-Christian is in divided into two categories. One, students with excellent high school grades and who qualify for entrance to the university honor program are granted Direct Admission to the nursing major. On the other hand, students with lower grades who do not meet requirements for the honors programs are first admitted in the pre-nursing program before seeking admission to the major. Only pre-nursing students who have earned an average GPA of 2.75 are allowed for the 2nd option of admission which involves a competitive process.

Wright state university offers its bachelor of nursing from two locations; Miami Valley and Chillicothe. After starting at either campus as freshmen, students must remain committed to finish their program from that location; i.e. no provision for taking classes at either campuses. In both campuses, students must first complete a prerequisites course program prior to applying to the nursing major phase. The only difference between the two campuses is that the program at the Miami Valley campus allows students to complete the program at their own pace. On the contrary, the Chillicothe program is run is a cohort manner where all students are required to move from one level to the next in a cohort fashion.
