Online LVN to BSN Programs in 2022

Licensed in California and Texas, Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) are the same as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in other states. For many LVNs, landing a bachelor’s degree can lead to better job opportunities and help position them to begin the process of obtaining a Registered Nurse license. Thanks to several online LVN to BSN programs, LVNs can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) between shifts, late at night, or early in the morning, all from the comfort of home.

While a bachelor’s degree isn’t necessary for a career in the nursing field, as you progress in your career, you may find a BSN would give you a competitive edge for coveted jobs. You’ll also be able to work in a wider range of settings, as well as being eligible for administration positions. For an LVN who is already working in the field, you may be able to find a program that will give you credit for the work you’ve been doing, saving you time and money.

Online LVN to BSN programs

If you live in Northern California, California State University at Chico has a new online LVN to BSN program that will let you combine online learning with on-campus experiences. Minimal time is spent in the classroom, with high technology simulation allowing you to get hands-on experience online.

For Texans, the University of Texas Health Science Center has an online BSN program targeted toward LVNs. You will be given credit for any classes and certifications you’ve received, and the school will even let you borrow a computer from the school’s Health Science Center if you don’t have one. In order to enroll in the BSN program, you must first have completed 62 hours of pre-requisites.

With campuses in Dallas, Texas, as well as Hollywood, Anaheim, and Ontario, California, West Coast University has an online LVN to BSN program that combines in-class instruction with online learning. Using that combination, the school says you’ll be able to complete your degree in 34 months.

Indiana State University allows you to attend classes completely online, with no classroom attendance required. You’ll be able to do your clinical locally, at a facility approved by the university. Billing itself as costing half the price and taking half the time of a traditional nursing BSN program, Indiana State has no waiting list, allowing you to start working toward your future right now.

The College Network connects with a variety of online colleges to find the best LVN to BSN program for you. Using its Comprehensive Learning Module program, The College Network prepares you to take an equivalency exam at a local testing center that will award you with college credits you may transfer to a college of your choice. While this is not a completely online college option, it will allow you to get some of your basics out of the way before progressing to more hands-on learning.

What’s Next?

Once you’ve obtained your BSN, what next? If you haven’t already, you might consider pursuing your Registered Nurse (RN) license, as RNs make, on average, $65,000 per year. RNs are in high demand right now. If your goal is hospital administration or teaching, at this point you’ll likely be considering pursuing a master’s degree. Even if teaching and administration aren’t your goals, earning these higher-level degrees can also make you eligible for higher-level nursing jobs.

Nurses with bachelor’s and master’s degrees can also begin working toward a Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, which ups both a nurse’s earnings and working opportunities. Nurse Practitioners are often taking over duties traditionally performed by doctors, earning special placement at hospitals and medical practices for having such an in-demand skill set.
