The TRANSIT (Training Nurse Scientists in Interdisciplinary & Translational Research in the Underserved) program for PhD students, is a separate PhD program in the Columbia University School of Nursing, which admits nursing scholars from minority and economically-disadvantaged groups. CUNY, The Graduate Center is the branch of the City University of New York (CUNY) which grants graduate degrees. More than 4,500 students are served and over 33 programs of study are offered at the doctoral level. CUNY, The Graduate Center was established in 1961.

The CUNY-Graduate center offers a Doctor of Nursing Science in collaboration with Hunter and Lehman Colleges and the College of Staten Island. The Doctor of Nursing Science, a degree which most closely resembles a PhD in Nursing is offered at The CUNY Graduate Center. The Doctor of Nursing Science requires a dissertation as part of the degree requirements, and while the PhD in Nursing focuses on research related to nursing, the Doctor of Nursing Science focuses on nursing research as it relates to nursing patient outcomes.

A full-time program, students are required to take 9 credits (full-time for graduate study) each semester. Therefore, it is recommended that students in the Doctor of Nursing Science program do not engage in full-time employment. The Doctor of Nursing Science is a six semester, four year program. Additionally, the program offers courses during the working hours of the weekday, preventing many nurses from working a full time schedule.

Masters prepared nurses are eligible to apply for the DNS program. Applicants to the DNS program should have completed a prerequisite course in statistics. Other admission criteria to the Doctor of Nursing Science include an earned BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) and MSN (Master of Science in Nursing). Prospective students should submit GRE scores, transcripts, two letters of recommendation and an essay as part of the admission process.

Campuses include New York City, Midtown Center, Law School, Graduate Center, Briarcliff Manor and Pleasantville campuses. Pace University was established in 1906, and today more than 13,000 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Pace University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is offered through the Lienhard School of Nursing. The Doctor of Nursing Practice is a 37 credit program dedicated to training nurse practitioners in leadership. Admission requirements to the DNP program include a minimum 3.3 GPA in a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to write scholarly papers and are required to submit a writing sample, two letters of recommendation and a resume. Prospective students in the DNP program should have certification as an FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner).

Each year 24 students are admitted to the Doctor of Nursing practice degree program at Pace University. The DNP program may be completed in three years, and is offered in a hybrid format. Students will participate in coursework both online and on-campus. Up to ten years are available to complete the DNP program. The DNP curriculum is developed according to standards set by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Established in 1948, St. John Fisher College is a private liberal arts college. Students enrolled in St. John Fisher College can choose from bachelors through doctoral degree programs in over 32 majors.

The Wegman School of Nursing at St. John Fisher College offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice terminal degree program. Ranging from 48 credits to 72 credits, the DNP can be completed in 2 to 3.5 years of study depending upon the qualification of the nurse upon entering the doctoral program. Both nurses who hold a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) are eligible to participate in the program.

Students are trained in a clinical setting which offers the opportunity to work with health professionals from other related disciplines besides nursing. As the final project in the program, students are required to complete a project demonstrating their knowledge in an area of evidence-based nursing practice. Graduates of the Doctor of Nursing Practice will have completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of clinical practice.

Applicants to the DNP program should have Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) certification as a Nurse Midwife (CNM), Nurse Anesthetist (CNA), Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Prospective students to the DNP program should have completed an MSN with a 3.3 or higher GPA. Currently admission is open to masters prepared students who already hold APN certification, but an option in the future will be open to bachelors prepared students.

The PhD in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice, both terminal nursing degree programs are offered at the Decker School of Nursing of Binghamton University. Both programs have a bachelors and masters degree entry option. The PhD in Nursing focuses on developing nursing knowledge and research as it relates to vulnerable populations. The DNP admits current NPs and CNS and also offers admission to bachelors prepared nurses who can choose from the following practice areas:

Admission requirements for the DNP program include a BSN or MSN with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The Sage Colleges: PhD in Nursing Program Review

The Doctor of Nursing Science in Education and Leadership is a research-focused degree. The DNS differs from the PhD in that its research is concerned with patient outcomes, rather than nursing areas in a broad sense. The Doctor of Nursing Science is delivered in a hybrid format, with students taking courses online and on-campus during some weekends of the semester.

To apply to the Doctor of Nursing Science Program, students should be graduates of an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) program with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Prospective applicants who do not achieve this GPA may be admitted conditionally. Other requirements include submitting letters of recommendation, transcripts and an essay.

Sage College graduates have gone on to hold executive level positions in the field of nursing. The college claims that almost every “chief nursing officer” in the New York area graduated from Sage College.

The Robert Wood Johnson and Fuld Scholars program are two programs available at the University of Rochester.

Three unique programs are available for nurses seeking doctoral education.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice prepares nurses for a career as practicing nurse leader. The doctoral degree program may be completed in 2.5 years. Admission requirements include a masters degree in nursing earned with a 3.5 GPA and a 3.0 GPA or higher in the undergraduate program.

The PhD program is offered in Health Practice Research and is open to a variety of healthcare professionals including nurses and physical therapists. To apply to the PhD program, nurses should have a masters degree in their clinical area earned with at least a 3.5 GPA. Letters of recommendation are also required and should come from recommenders holding a doctoral degree.

An accelerated MS to PhD program allows RNs with a BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) to earn an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), a Nurse Practitioner APN (Advanced Practice Nursing) certification and the PhD within 5 years. Applicants to this academically demanding program should have a BSN with a 3.0 or above.
