Like many universities at the time, WVU was established through the federal land grant program that provided free land to states to establish universities.

West Virginia University is based in Morgantown, West Virginia. Morgantown is a haven for outdoor activities; students can find skiing, rock-climbing and white water rafting nearby. More than 35,000 students are educated at West Virginia University annually.

The West Virginia University School of Nursing offers bachelors through doctoral nursing degree programs, as well as continuing education and certificate programs.

To apply to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program, applicants should have an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certification in an area approved by the West Virginia Board of Nursing. Approved areas include Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Nurse Anesthetist (CNA), Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Nurse Administrator. Admission requirements to the Doctor of Nursing Practice program include an MSN from an accredited nursing program, and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The PhD in Nursing is a full or part time academic program focused on preparing nurses for a career as a researcerh, teacher or clinical and healthcare policy expert. Admission to the nursing PhD program requires BSN and MSN degrees earned with a 3.0 or better GPA.
