ADN Programs in Maine

What kind of nursing will an ADN allow me to perform in Maine?
An ADN (“Associate’s Degree in Nursing”) from an approved nursing program in Maine will allow you to fulfill the other requirements for obtaining a Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maine. Without an ADN (or a four year bachelor’s degree), the State of Maine will not only refuse to issue an RN license, but also will refuse to allow the applicant to take the required licensing exam for RN’s, or even file an application in Maine.

Why Be an ADN RN in Maine?

Nurses of all forms are in short supply, but in the field of nursing, registered nurses are particularly in demand. As the baby boomer generation enters its golden years, the demand is expected to further increase, especially in Maine, which has become a leading retirement location for people from the Northeast. One effect of this shortage is the evolution of the two year ADN programs in Maine which will equip you to take the national licensing exam for registered nurses.

What Licensing Examination does Maine Require ADN RN Applicants to Take?

To become a registered nurse with an ADN degree, Maine and most other states require you to take the NCLEX-RN examination. NCLEX-RN simply stands for the National Council (of State Boards of Nursing) Licensure Examination for RN’s. (There is a similar exam, the NCLEX-PN for licensed practical nurses.) The examination is a comprehensive, six-hour test. In order to be eligible for the test, you must first have completed your Maine approved ADN program, and then have submitted an application packet both to the Maine State Board of Nursing and Pearson Vue, the company that designs and administers the test. Once your application is accepted, then you will be assigned a testing spot and date for your examination.

How Do I Choose a School in Maine That Will Give Me the Best Possible Chance to Pass the Licensing Exam?

There is no magic bullet available to predict with certainty which ADN program in Maine will give you the best chance for success, but there are some factors that can help you decide. First, the school must have an ADN program approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing, or, for an out of state school, by an appropriate outside accrediting agency. Maine will allow you to apply for a nursing license even if you obtained your ADN from an out-of-state program as long as the ADN program was approved in the state where it was taken and the ADN program meets qualifications comparable to those required in Maine at the time of the applicant’s graduation. Any legitimate ADN program to which you are applying should be able to tell you if their program meets Maine’s qualifications. The school also should be able to give you statistics on the pass rates for its ADN graduates on the national licensing exam. If the school does not keep track of its pass rate, that probably should be a red flag that you might consider another school.
