LVN Programs in California

In California, the functions of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is done by a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). The system for qualifying as an LVN in “The Golden State” is much the same as that in the rest of the country for training LPN’s though. Nevertheless, let us take a closer look at how it all works.

Entrance Requirements for LVN Training in California

If you want to train in a healthcare field, and you only have a high school diploma or a GED, then LVN training in California is one of the best options available. Aside from a high school diploma, and a clear criminal record, there are no other constraints on this training.

What You’ll Learn During LVN Training in California

LVN training programs in the state of California must be approved by the California Bureau of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians. The program is about a year long, and covers practical and theoretical aspects of the job, including anatomy and pharmacology, patient care and nursing, medical terminology and nursing ethics.

The program is designed to ensure that when you have completed it, you will be equipped to work in any long term care facility, hospital, doctors office or dentists practice in the state of California.

Where to Train As An LVN in California

Most of the accredited LVN training programs in California are offered by colleges and community colleges, but there are approved programs for LVNs throughout the state.

Wherever you choose to train, just make sure that the course you choose is state approved, and meets the minimum training requirements for the State of California. There are programs that offer additional training modules, but if you don’t cover the basics in your training program, you won’t be eligible for licensing.

Prospects and Earnings for LVN’s in California

LVN’s are in high demand in California, and elsewhere in the US. They also earn relatively high salaries, considering that training takes only a year to fourteen months, in most cases, to complete.

In fact, the current average salary for an LVN in California is between $14 and $24 per hour, depending on where you work, and your skill and experience level.

Many LVN’s in California and elsewhere also choose to continue their studies, and eventually become medical technicians, registered nurses, or work in hospital administration, so there’s lots of room for growth.
