Hospitals That Pay for Nursing School

As the expenses associated with becoming a nurse can be daunting, there are hospitals that will pay either part or a whole student’s tuition. The key is taking the time and thoroughly researching all hospitals within your area and understanding the differences of each program to compare them effectively.

It also helps to assess your own financial situation. You might not realize that you actually qualify for some of the programs that exist.

Hospitals may offer financial help in the form of low-interest loans, scholarships, hospital grants, and study/work programs. Having said this, one of the keys to being able to take advantage of these programs is to become an employee of the hospital. If you find a hospital that offers an incentive you desire, then try to apply for a job at the hospital in any capacity. Hospitals give preference to employees and after a certain length of time employed, the incentives become available to employees. It is acceptable to be employed as a custodian or cafeteria worker and take advantage of an incentive for a nursing program.

Low interest loans are simply loans with a lower interest rate than normal. These are generally offered to high qualifying applicants to a program, but may certainly help to ease the cost.

There are work-study programs that are available to students in hospitals. A current nursing student in any semester may apply for a job in the hospital as part of a work-study program. The nursing student might be eligible for a clerical position, an aide position, or a cleaning position.  A portion of the income goes towards the student’s tuition. These particular programs can benefit a student in many ways. The student gains valuable knowledge about the hospital setting while working during hours the student is not taking part in the clinical portion of the nursing program. Exposure to a greater variety of personnel can be beneficial when the student is ready to apply for a full-time nursing position. A good work ethic and performance may give the student an advantage in learning about jobs opening up in the future. These positions may not have yet been advertised to the general population.

Scholarship programs are generally reserved for full-time students of an accredited nursing program in their final year of education. Based on a student’s performance, a scholarship may be awarded in return for a commitment by the student to begin working at the hospital for a required amount of time, as soon as they are licensed. A high grade point average (GPA), excellent clinical skills, and a letter of recommendation are required. Hospitals may ask for a time commitment of 1 year to 3 years. There are penalties if the nurse does not fulfill his or her end of the commitment.

Hospitals also offer nursing grants to those who qualify. Minorities, disabled, low-income individuals may have the ability to apply to a hospital nursing program where all of the training is completed on-site, not at a traditional college. The hospital receives funding to promote the aid in bettering the futures of these groups of individuals, and you may be able to receive your nursing degree through a grant program. Grants do not have to be repaid.

Search your local hospital websites, then call and request an appointment to speak with a supervisor in the nursing department. They are more than willing to help and direct an enthusiastic student in the right direction to finding Hospitals with funding programs for nursing students.
