Nursing Schools by State

What are the top nursing schools in the United States? There are thousands of nursing schools across the country that offer pre-licensure, post-licensure, graduate, and undergraduate courses. The available options can make choosing the best nursing programs a difficult endeavor. That is why many prospective nursing students will ask the above question. Not all nursing schools are created equal, just because one nursing school has the highest tuition does not mean it is the best school or even that is a good nursing school.

There are certain qualities and attributes you should look for before selecting a nursing college to apply to. Before you submit your application to an on-campus or even an online nursing degree program, find out exactly what makes a nursing school rise to the top of the list of the best nursing schools in the US.

Accredited Nursing Courses

Top nursing schools in the United States award credits to the students when they pass the course. This is also applicable to online nursing degree programs. Most nursing courses are listed as three ten credits each. Top nursing programs will provide the student with a well-rounded education which will usually include the following courses; freshman seminar (an introduction to college life), writing 1, writing 2 (these are also known as 101 or 102 then 101 is the first class and 102 is the advanced version of the course.) A student cannot take writing 102 before writing 101. General psychology, developmental psychology (a student must take general psychology first it is known as the prereq (or prerequisite.), sociology, microbiology, anatomy & physiology I & 11, physical education. These courses are all required and provide what is known as the well-rounded education portion of your nursing degree.

Your nursing program will have courses that will include the following – although they may be called something different (but similar) depending on the nursing school you attend:
– Nurse caring foundations I
– Nurse caring principles  II
– Family nurse caring principles
– Nurse caring principles III
– Nurse caring principles IV
– Mental health nurse caring principles
– Nursing leadership and professional issues

The above classes equal 68 credits and are divided into four semesters, which equals a two-year degree known as an associate’s degree. Once the nursing exam (NCLEX) is taken and passed by the student, they will be awarded the label of a registered nurse (RN).

Nursing Schools Success Rate for the NCLEX-RN

The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse) is the examination that all nursing students who have taken the accredited college courses and passed them must take in order to receive their license and begin practicing nursing as an RN. The nursing school you choose to train with should either have a section on their website or information in the literature provided to potential students that lists the success rate of students who have passed the NCLEX-RN exam.

Many potential nursing students are not even aware of the importance of the success and failure rate of this test. If the school does not provide you with the information ask them and if you still do not get a response. Do a simple search of the school’s state government department of consumer affairs board of registered nurses provides a list of every nursing school in the state with the number of potential nurses and the passing rate percentage for the past five years.

Knowing the school’s NCLEX-RN success rate is crucial when deciding on a nursing school. If they have a high passing rate then the students are learning what they should be learning. If the failure rate is high then chances are the students are not learning what they need to know. Which generally translates to poor teaching and a serious lack of clinical experience for the students. Do not assume that just because you are intelligent that you will pass the NCLEX-RN with flying colors. If you are not taught what you need to know, you may fail even if you did extremely well with all your courses.

Nursing Class Size and Clinical Rotation

The student-to-faculty rate is important when choosing a nursing school. If a class has too many students for one instructor some of the students are bound to fall through the cracks or even quit school if the instructor is not able to attend to the needs of all of their students. This is especially important during the clinical rotation part of the nurse schooling. Clinical rotation is when the nursing students spend time in a hospital, nursing home, or other health care facility working directly with patients under the supervision of their instructor.

If an instructor has, too many students to keep track of that can lead to injury or even death of a patient. Unfortunately, the above scenario happens way too often and that leaves the student riddled with guilt and many times a new career choice. Therefore, it is very important that the class sizes and students’ clinical rotation size is not too large. When looking for a good nursing school be sure to look for one that has small class sizes and clinical rotations. The student will learn more and the patients will not be put at risk.

Nursing Specialties

Once a nursing student has taken all of the required courses to become an RN they may decide they would like to specialize in a certain area of nursing. There are numerous options to choose from we will look at a few of the more popular choices that nurses make. Ambulatory care, burn unit, camp nurse, cardiac, cardiac catheter lab, community/ public health, critical care (ICU, CCU, SCU, PCU, NICS), emergency room, geriatrics, gastroenterology, home health care, hospice, infection control, infectious diseases, maternal, medical, neo-natal, obstetrical, oncology, pediatric, psychiatric, pulmonary, radiology, rehab, (speech, drug, and alcohol, physical), renal, school nurse, surgical (pre-op and post-op), telemetry, transplant, trauma, urology, and wound care. The nursing specialties listed above are only about half of the specialty areas a nurse can select.
All of the specialties require at minimum an associate’s degree as a registered nurse. Of course, the more advanced training a nurse has the better opportunity they will have at being selected to provide nursing care in one of these fields. View all nursing specialties here.

Nursing school is difficult enough even when attending any of the top nursing schools in the United States. Do not unnecessarily make things harder on yourself by choosing a school that will not even provide you with the education needed to be the best nurse you can be.

The following is an alphabetical list of the top 100 nursing schools across the United States. The list contains the school’s address, accreditation, and nursing programs offered.
