LPN Programs in North Carolina

There’s a big demand in North Carolina for trained and licensed practical nurses. In fact, while the demand throughout the US is high, in North Carolina, there’s expected to be an increase in the demand for these healthcare professionals of around 20% between now and 2018.

If you like working with people, and you’re looking for a career option that offers great prospects, then becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is certainly a good option, however, before you make any plans, it helps to know how you can become qualified to work legally as an LPN in North Carolina.

State Approval for LPN Programs in North Carolina

As with most other states, all those who want to be licensed in North Carolina first have to complete a state approved LPN training course.

LPN training classes are managed by the North Carolina Board of Nursing in this case, and that organisation approves training courses and programs, and sets the curriculum they need to cover.

What to Expect From a North Carolina LPN Program

Most of the approved LPN programs in North Carolina are between 12 and 18 months long, and most are offered by technical and community colleges, as well as a few universities and other institutions.

The program itself covers everything from basic nursing skills to technical and scientific know how, and there are both hands on, clinical training modules, and classroom or lab studies.

You should note that different institutions may have different admissions requirements, so if you want to find a course, you will need to find one that matches your credentials. In some cases, in addition to the usual requirements (high school diploma or GED, inoculations and clear criminal record in most cases), you may be required to have completed the Nurse Aide 1 program, and be registered on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

Getting Certified as an LPN in North Carolina

After you have completed an approved LPN course, the next step is to pass the NCLEX-PN certification exam, and to apply to the North Carolina Board of Nursing for registration in the state. Once you have done that, you will be legally eligible to work in any hospital, clinic, nursing home or private medical practice in NC, and you will be able to call yourself an LPN.

Earnings for an LPN in North Carolina

Entry level salaries for LPNs in North Carolina are around $32,000, but experienced LPNs earn, on average, around $40,000 per year. Earnings fluctuate based on area and the institution you work for, but as you gain more experience, you can expect to earn a respectable salary for your efforts.
