LVN Programs

A Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) provides direct patient care for both acute and chronic conditions under the direct supervision of a physician or registered nurse. This is an excellent entry-level nursing career offering diverse responsibility with attractive salaries. Before you find out how to become an LVN and what are LVN education requirements, let me first show you what the career entails.

Career Overview

Becoming a licenses vocational nurse is the fastest route to entering the nursing profession. With about one year of study you will be able to provide a diverse range of patient care in many types of health care settings, from hospitals to nursing homes, community clinics, and home health agencies. Working under the direct supervision of registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses care for patients in several ways depending on their specific job. Some of the most common duties of an LVN include:

  • Take  vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Record patient medical history and current condition
  • Prepare and dispense prescribed medications
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, grooming, eating, and walking.
  • Collect laboratory specimens such as blood and urine samples and perform basic laboratory tests.
  • Educate patients and their families regarding health promotion and wellness.
  • Supervise nursing assistants and aides.

Career Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the outlook for all nursing professionals is very bright with an anticipated 22 percent growth rate through 2018. This demand arises from two primary factors: 1) the aging of the population and increased need for medical services; 2) the many nurses who are leaving the profession due to retirement or change of career.

LVN Education Requirements and Training

Training programs for licensed vocational nurses are offered in hospitals, private vocational schools, as well as community colleges. Most programs take a year to complete and will require a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) for admission. Upon graduation you will need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination–for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

Coursework in LVN programs: The following are the most common courses offered in LVN programs:

  • Basic Nursing Skills for Practical/Vocational Nurses
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Nutrition and Wellness
  • Emergency Nursing  Care
  • Pediatric Nursing (caring for patients up to 12 years of age).
  • Obstetric Nursing (caring for pregnant women)
  • Medical-Surgical Nursing (caring for patients with both chronic and acute conditions).
  • Clinical training at a variety of healthcare settings. Number of clinical hours will vary by program

School Accreditation

It is important that you choose a school that has been approved by the state in which you hope to work. Most states require that LVNs graduate from nationally accredited programs since this provides evidence that the school has met high standards with regard to nursing education.

The National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as official accreditation agencies of nursing education programs. The NLNAC accredits diploma, associates, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate nursing programs while the CCNE only accredits bachelor and graduate programs.

Aside from attending an accredited program and passing the NCLEX-PN exam, every state has individual requirements for nursing practice. For this reason it is important to research your states requirements so you can be assured that you are meeting all necessary requirements. You may find the contact information for your State Board of Nursing (BON) on the Web site of the NCSBN (ncsbn.org).

Benefits of Attending an Accredited Program

Attending an accredited nursing school means that you have met the basic criteria for nursing practice and your diploma will be accepted by all State Boards of Nursing. Attending an accredited nursing school will also enhance your employment prospects and career mobility since it will be a relatively easy process to obtain a nursing license across all 50 states, provided you have also passed the national certification examination.

The NCLEX-PN Examination

The NCLEX-PN exam is used to determine whether the candidate possesses the requisite skill set and knowledge to enter the nursing profession. The exam is based more on practical nursing skills than theory. The NCLEX-PN is a computer-based multiple choice exam which uses an interactive program called Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to measure your degree of competence in nursing practice.

Licensed Vocational Nurses will need to answer a minimum of 85 questions after which the computer will attempt to evaluate your level of skills and knowledge. If you are markedly above the minimum standard for competency, you will receive a passing score; if you are below this minimum standard you will fail. If your performance is indeterminate, you will continue to answer questions until the computer can provide a definitive evaluation.

Licensed vocational nurses may answer a maximum of 205 questions. You will have a maximum of 5 hours during which to complete the test, including the time set aside for the introductory computer tutorial and for two 10 minute breaks. In effect, you have 4 ½ hours to complete the exam.

Eligibility to take the NCLEX-PN

In order to sit for the NCLEX-PN you must apply for a license through your State Board of Nursing. The board will determine whether you meet basic eligibility criteria. One criterion is that you have graduated from an accredited nursing school. Once you have been approved to sit for the NCLEX-PN by your State Board of Nursing, it will submit your name to the NCSBN who will then send you the NCLEX-PN examination Candidate Handbook.

You will also receive an Authorization to Test (ATT letter) form the NCSBN, along with a list of PersonVue testing centers and instructions for registration. Be sure to bring the ATT letter to your testing appointment because you will not be admitted to the testing center without it. You can register with PearsonVue, the testing vendor of the NCSBN by phone, online, or mailing in the application form.

The fee to take the NCLEX-PN is $200. payable by credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express), bank check, or money order. As noted, you will receive pass/fail notification once you complete the exam but these results are subject to review the NCSBN. You will receive final results approximately 4 weeks after your test completion date.

Online LVN to BSN Programs in 2022

Licensed in California and Texas, Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) are the same as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in other states. For many LVNs, landing a bachelor’s degree can lead to better job opportunities and help position them to begin the process of obtaining a Registered Nurse license. Thanks to several online LVN to BSN programs, LVNs can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) between shifts, late at night, or early in the morning, all from the comfort of home.

While a bachelor’s degree isn’t necessary for a career in the nursing field, as you progress in your career, you may find a BSN would give you a competitive edge for coveted jobs. You’ll also be able to work in a wider range of settings, as well as being eligible for administration positions. For an LVN who is already working in the field, you may be able to find a program that will give you credit for the work you’ve been doing, saving you time and money.

Online LVN to BSN programs

If you live in Northern California, California State University at Chico has a new online LVN to BSN program that will let you combine online learning with on-campus experiences. Minimal time is spent in the classroom, with high technology simulation allowing you to get hands-on experience online.

For Texans, the University of Texas Health Science Center has an online BSN program targeted toward LVNs. You will be given credit for any classes and certifications you’ve received, and the school will even let you borrow a computer from the school’s Health Science Center if you don’t have one. In order to enroll in the BSN program, you must first have completed 62 hours of pre-requisites.

With campuses in Dallas, Texas, as well as Hollywood, Anaheim, and Ontario, California, West Coast University has an online LVN to BSN program that combines in-class instruction with online learning. Using that combination, the school says you’ll be able to complete your degree in 34 months.

Indiana State University allows you to attend classes completely online, with no classroom attendance required. You’ll be able to do your clinical locally, at a facility approved by the university. Billing itself as costing half the price and taking half the time of a traditional nursing BSN program, Indiana State has no waiting list, allowing you to start working toward your future right now.

The College Network connects with a variety of online colleges to find the best LVN to BSN program for you. Using its Comprehensive Learning Module program, The College Network prepares you to take an equivalency exam at a local testing center that will award you with college credits you may transfer to a college of your choice. While this is not a completely online college option, it will allow you to get some of your basics out of the way before progressing to more hands-on learning.

What’s Next?

Once you’ve obtained your BSN, what next? If you haven’t already, you might consider pursuing your Registered Nurse (RN) license, as RNs make, on average, $65,000 per year. RNs are in high demand right now. If your goal is hospital administration or teaching, at this point you’ll likely be considering pursuing a master’s degree. Even if teaching and administration aren’t your goals, earning these higher-level degrees can also make you eligible for higher-level nursing jobs.

Nurses with bachelor’s and master’s degrees can also begin working toward a Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, which ups both a nurse’s earnings and working opportunities. Nurse Practitioners are often taking over duties traditionally performed by doctors, earning special placement at hospitals and medical practices for having such an in-demand skill set.

A Great Time for Nursing

With healthcare such an important issue in our country right now, it’s more important than ever to further yourself in the medical field. As with any career, having education positions you to beat out the competition for the best jobs. With online LVN to BSN programs now available, you can take classes without interrupting your busy work schedule.

LVN Programs in California

In California, the functions of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is done by a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). The system for qualifying as an LVN in “The Golden State” is much the same as that in the rest of the country for training LPN’s though. Nevertheless, let us take a closer look at how it all works.

Entrance Requirements for LVN Training in California

If you want to train in a healthcare field, and you only have a high school diploma or a GED, then LVN training in California is one of the best options available. Aside from a high school diploma, and a clear criminal record, there are no other constraints on this training.

What You’ll Learn During LVN Training in California

LVN training programs in the state of California must be approved by the California Bureau of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians. The program is about a year long, and covers practical and theoretical aspects of the job, including anatomy and pharmacology, patient care and nursing, medical terminology and nursing ethics.

The program is designed to ensure that when you have completed it, you will be equipped to work in any long term care facility, hospital, doctors office or dentists practice in the state of California.

Where to Train As An LVN in California

Most of the accredited LVN training programs in California are offered by colleges and community colleges, but there are approved programs for LVNs throughout the state.

Wherever you choose to train, just make sure that the course you choose is state approved, and meets the minimum training requirements for the State of California. There are programs that offer additional training modules, but if you don’t cover the basics in your training program, you won’t be eligible for licensing.

Prospects and Earnings for LVN’s in California

LVN’s are in high demand in California, and elsewhere in the US. They also earn relatively high salaries, considering that training takes only a year to fourteen months, in most cases, to complete.

In fact, the current average salary for an LVN in California is between $14 and $24 per hour, depending on where you work, and your skill and experience level.

Many LVN’s in California and elsewhere also choose to continue their studies, and eventually become medical technicians, registered nurses, or work in hospital administration, so there’s lots of room for growth.

LVN Programs in Texas

The first thing you should know when you’re considering Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) programs in Texas, is that many of them aren’t called LPN courses in the state. In Texas, as in California, the roles of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) are performed by Licensed Vocational Nurses. So the training programs for practical nurses in “The Lone Star State” are mostly referred to as Vocational Nursing (VN) Programs.

There are several other facts you should know about Texas LVN programs, before you make any decisions.

As with other states, Texas requires would be licensed vocational nurses in the state to complete a state approved training course before they can apply for registration. They also set the curriculum for approved courses, and in Texas, that means nearly 1,400 hours of instruction, of which nearly 560 are classroom based, and the remainder are hands on clinical training – either working with patients, or in a lab.

The state is very strict about what would be LVNs need to know, which means that there are actually relatively few approved training courses for LVN’s in Texas – all of them at colleges, universities and technical or vocational schools.

One option for a vocational nursing program is the Vocational Nursing Institute, located in Houston, Texas. VNI’s vocational nursing program has been approved by the TX Board of Nursing since 2012, and is accredited by the COE (Council on Occupational Education).

Certification and Registration for LVN’s in Texas

As with most other states, your mission to become an LVN in Texas does not begin and end with training. You will also need to meet certain criteria (clear criminal record, drug testing among other specific criteria), and you will need to pass the NCLEX-PN competency exam.

Once you have passed that exam (which you can only take after you have completed the state approved training curriculum), you can apply to the Texas State Board of Nursing for registration. Then you are legally allowed to work as an LVN in the state.

You will legally be allowed to work as a GVN (Graduate Vocational Nurse) for 75 days after you complete the course, but this grace period is not renewable, nor can you extend it, so you should make sure you take the test as soon as possible!

Career and Earnings Outlook for an LVN in Texas

The salary range for licensed vocational nursing varies quite a bit, based on geographical location, and where you work. LVN’s in big cities tend to earn more, as do those who work in high pressure environments like ICU’s.

On average, however, you can expect to earn anything from about $32,000 upwards working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas. You will also find that with a high demand for LVNs in the state, there are plenty of employment options, from working with infants in maternity hospitals, to caring for the aged in nursing homes, and everything in between.

LVN Scope of Practice in California

Licensed practice nurses (LPN) or else referred to as Licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) in CA and TX are nurse professionals who assist registered nurses and other senior medical staff. They carry outpatient-based duties like recording of vital signs e.g. blood sugar levels, temperature, blood pressure, and taking care of patients’ hygiene.

It is worth noting that LVNs/LPNs in any state have laws that govern what they are legally allowed to do in their line of duty. It is not uncommon to find LVNs/LPNs carrying out duties that belong to RNs but which are not stipulated in their state’s board of nursing. In all cases though, LVNs are supposed to undertake all their duties under the supervision of a Registered nurse or physician.

Laws Governing LVN Scope of Practice in California

According to the bureau of labor and statistics, California is among the top ten highest paying states for licensed vocational nurses in the US. This record translates to a huge influx of LVNs seeking reciprocity from other states to work in California.

The LVN scope of practice in California is outlined by the Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians: which is under the department of consumer affairs of the state of CA. These clearly written documents governing the practice of LVNs are known as the Business and Profession Code-Sections 2859 to 2873.

Definition of LVN by The State of CA

The board recognizes one as a vocational nurse only if you have taken a course in practical nursing from an accredited nursing school and thereafter licensed as an LVN. In addition, the state of CA gives the meaning of an LVN as one who has met all stipulated requirements for licensure as a VN and thereof receives compensation from his/her practice under the tag of an LVN.

Permissible Practices for LVNs in CA

According to the business code of ethics 2859, under the supervision of a doctor, a licensed vocational nurse in California will have the mandate to undertake the following:

i)        Have the ability to give medication via hypodermics injections and oral admin

ii)      Have the capacity to draw blood from a patient but only if they have priory been instructed to do so by an RN or a physician. The code continues to stipulate that such an activity can only happen if the LVN has shown competence to the doctor in blood drawing or has successfully completed a course in that area from an accredited school.

iii)    Is given the capacity to start and continue to give intravenous fluids medications but only if they have completed credit in such IV activity.

iv)    The LVN will, under the supervision of an RN or physician, have the authorization to carry out skin tests. Such mandate will include doing TB, Histoplasma, or coccidioidin tests and as usual, only possible if the LVN has recorded course coverage on the said tests.

v)      Will have permission to give immunizations if they are able to demonstrate to the supervising RN the knowledge of emergency reactions and remediation of the same following immunization with such agents.

vi)    Any individual who has served in the military as a medical corp. will be, after application given the license as an LVN as long they have good and honorable conditions to show during their service in the military. Such individuals must have served in the aforesaid government institution for not less than 12 months and are able to sit and pass the NCLEX-LVN exam.

vii)  Any LVN who, in good faith offers to help in emergency situations where nursing skills are required will be not be held liable for any civil damages inherent from such offering. This applies to any LVN who decides to render such emergency services outside their usual place of work.

viii)            Anyone can practice as a VN in CA in settings similar to those of religious establishments. But such individuals doing such voluntary work, have no legal entitlements to be called LVNs if they do not possess a license approved by the board.

Unauthorized Practices for LVNs in California

The LVN scope of practice in California has various limitations. As outlined by the business code of ethics of California, no one practicing under the title and license of an LVN will undertake the following:

i)        Have the authority to practice medicine and related surgical procedures

ii)      Will not undertake or independently without the consultation of a doctor get involved in the treatment of mental, pain, physical injury, or diseases. Undertaking such activities will be an outright violation of the provided CA LVN laws.

Online LVN to RN Programs

The statistics are alarming. In an economy where job growth has stagnated for most professions, jobs for Registered Nurses still remain unfilled. With an average salary that tops $65,000, LPNs are looking for a way to fit coursework into busy schedules to help land that coveted license. Using these online LVN to RN programs, you can take courses between shifts, at night after the kids have gone to bed, or anywhere you have Internet access.

Texas and California vs. Everywhere Else

If you’re an LVN, you were licensed in California or Texas, where nursing schools are plentiful. Your LVN will translate to an LPN in any other state, so you don’t have to take courses in your own state. You’ll just need to ensure you comply with the RN licensure rules for the state in which you plan to work.

If you’re currently working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), you have a couple of choices. One is to obtain your Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) which, while not necessary to obtain your RN license, can help give you an edge over the competition for jobs, as well as give you a step toward completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), if you choose.

Another choice is to prepare and take the NCLEX, which, upon completion, will certify you as an RN. The NCLEX is not an easy test, but the good news is that several online programs exist that will help you prepare. An NCLEX preparation class will cover all the basics, including pharmacology, disaster preparedness, and infection control—although topics regularly change. Good online LVN to RN programs allow you to prepare while still continuing your busy daily schedule.

NCLEX Preparedness

The Learning Extension includes pre-tests and study material, as well as study groups to give you the support you’ll need. In addition to NCLEX preparation courses, the Learning Extension also has continuing education classes for after you’ve obtained your RN license.

Kaplan Test Prep has a money-back guarantee on its NCLEX preparation program. To qualify for the guarantee, you must attend all NCLEX prep courses, as well as take seven Question Trainer tests prior to tackling the NCLEX. If you do not pass, Kaplan will refund your three-month enrollment fee. See the site for more details.

Hurst Review Services offers a NCLEX exam review that also comes with a money-back guarantee. With Hurst, you can choose from either an in-person review program or the online review package. With its online review, your courses come from experienced RNs via streaming video. You’ll also have access to faculty for any questions you might have. Your subscription gives you ninety days of unlimited access to Hurst’s test prep section to allow you to print off study materials and watch videos. Before you commit, Hurst allows you to watch a sample lecture so you can determine if this is the test prep method that will work for you.

Evolve Learning System has a series of courses designed to give you an all-in-one review package for the NCLEX. Choose from four-week, eight-week, or sixteen-week courses and you’ll receive information about a study guide you’ll need to buy and a link to access for the online study guide. Questions are provided at the end of each module that will help you review what you’ve learned in preparation for taking the test.

Nursing Education Consultants, Inc. has an online NCLEX review that gives you an online version of its book, A Study Guide for the NCLEX-PN® Exam. For even more convenience, the site allows you to download your coursework to an mp3 player to allow you to study on the go. The site has a sample of the course available for download so you can try before you buy.

Something for Nothing

Don’t discount the various free NCLEX review sites out there. With a little searching, you’ll likely find plenty of resources, as well as a community of others who have taken the test or are preparing to take it, just as you are. While studying on your own may not be as intensive as taking an online preparation course, if you’re on a tight budget, a little searching might lead you to online LVN to RN programs that will work for you.
